im on my third macbook and i have to take this one back now. first it was a problem with the plastic around the screen popping off, then my cd rom drive was scratching cds, now i just took a cd out of my drive and the same thing is going on. apple obviously didnt want to wait until this product was ready to sell to introduce it. its pissing me off because everytime i go in they act like i dropped the machine or something and its always an akward situation. if you are thinking about buying a macbook dont do it yet, wait a couple months, then if your lucky you might only have to return 1 or 2 until you get one of the rare machines which doesnt have an issue. i need a beer.

EDIT: I was pissed off when I wrote this MacBooks own go buy a couple of them mine works fine now I got everything worked out go buy like 10 of them a couple for each room of the house I can't wait to stuff 2 gigs of ram in it and hack into NASA and control spaceships like remote control cars from my wireless connection on the beach

I know plenty of people with MacBooks that work perfectly I'm sorry to the OP but you are one of the rare people with a faulty one(s), there is no real issue here.

my first macbook wouldnt eject cds.... but yea they gave me a new macbook and so far things seem to be goin well. OSX is sooo much better then windows, hell macs are sooooo much better then pcs (new switcher:D )

I do ocassionally hear like a high frequency noise or like whining noises when im runnin some appz, I try not to be really picky but then again when ya work so hard and finally are able to afford a mac, why would you wanna settle with a messed up computer? And like when im scroll up at some sites (like our forums) the text kinda gets a little blurry but thats prob cuz of the lcd? The glare from the glossy doesn't bother me.

I'd still recommend the macbook to everyone.

I can understand your feelings about goin back to the store and just wanting your macbook to be normal and perfect. No one deserves a faulty mac and upon recieving one with problems, they should be able to exchange them with another one as it only seems fair and the right thing to do.

The first problem I can understand, but the second. These drives have been made for years now. At first people had problems with the CD getting stuck inside the machine. The same exact drive is inside the MacBook Pro also.

Which Apple store did you buy it from. Something might of happen to the whole shipment. You are just unlucky, or the MacBook didnt like your choice in music.

I think you are the only one who had this problem on the board.

Do you have the Superdrive or Combo?

Last time I checked apple doesnt make the DVD drives in these machines its not their fault that you keep getting faulty ones this could happen with any computer as for the screen I would say that is apple's fault but sorry for the tough luck my 17'' MBP is great and the truth is hundreds of people have bought these products and the real problem is not enough people post on their working products.

The idea that only people who have problems, post, cannot ever be proven, so can we stop posting it, please? I would love if people would take the issues others have with new Macs seriously instead of writing that "oh, sorry to hear you are one of the FEW that got a faulty one." Most people who buy this stuff will get a faulty one. It's the case with most new Apple products (iPod, ibook G3, MBP, MB), or have you not been paying attention when people talk of Apple's QC going down the toilet the past few years?

Considering that Apple hand-picks all the components and builds the OS to work with them, it is not unreasonable to expect these things to work perfectly from day one of their release.

I noticed a DVD was scratched in a circular pattern after I'd ejected it from the superdrive in my Macbook. I hadn't noticed what it looked like before, but that made me a little wary. I tried a few CDs that I didn't care about, and no scratches yet.

One thing I do remember about the scratched one is that at one point while it was reading, I carried the laptop to another room, holding it mostly with one hand on the right side. I recall the DVD sounding like it "skidded" for a moment and then spun back up to normal. I'm almost 100% sure that the case must have flexed just barely enough to exceed the tight tolerances of the drive, causing the disc to crash into something momentarily. If so, I'd doubt it was anything "defective" with my drive or the computer. Just need to support the whole machine evenly when reading discs.

Either that, or the Macbook was offended at the fact that I was installing Windows XP Pro in Parallels. :D

the last time i checked, Apple doesnt even make any computer parts, but hire other companies (mostly in China) to make it for them.

You always will be waiting then... If you need the computer today buy it today. If not wait. I had the TI 15" 867 Powerbook, the CD got stuck inside. Apple sent out the box on monday. Tuesday got the box and my laptop was back thursday. I think they are still quick with their repairs. Might be quicker now with their stores.

For the few problems these Rev A products have. It is less then DELL, HP, Compaq, gateway ect. You see what the put on new laptops all these trial versions of software you dont want. Apple only puts Office which isnt bad.

But i do find that first time Apple buyers seem to be unlucky when buying new computers.

What is BAD LUCK...?

There is no such thing as BAD LUCK when one spends 2 Grand for a machine. The quality control at ASUSTEC sucks big time. Imagine you buy a car, and the seats make noises, the engine overheats, some instruments only work occasionally. NOBODY in the world would accept this so why are APPLE users so forgiving. I have a 10 TEN! year old TOSHIBA TECRA (incl. DVD and camera!!!) and my wife owns a IBM 600E Thinkpad. Both NEVER had any problems, with the exception that all WINdoof OS suck.

Mr. Jobs and Co. have to get their act together regarding hardware. 99% MUST BE FLAWLESS when released to the buyer, period.
No quarrle about OSX! It is a fantastic working environment, and all other APPLE software is professional.

:D

Such an unbiased post from someone who uses the name ibooksux, as their forum name, asking others to not be biased in support of Apple products.

I have a Rev. A iBook G4 and I've had it for nearly three years without any problems at all. The only time I ever had to call tech support for this machine was when I couldn't get the AirPort Extreme card to seat properly and I was calling to ask if there was some sort of "trick" to doing it. Otherwise, it's been a completely trouble-free machine.

I wouldn't recommend moving the computer when it's writing to the hard drive or reading/writing a CD/DVD, as was said earlier. However, I haven't had any issues with using it on my lap, or otherwise on an uneven surface. I try to always close the lid whenever I'm going to move it...sounds like that might be a good policy with the MacBook as well. ;)

My MacBook is Rev. A, and so was my TiBook. I'm almost positive my TiBook was one of the first to roll off the line in 2001. Never had a problem with it, and now it's finding a new loving home to serve someone for many years, even 5 years later.

Is it just me or has Apple quality slowly been going downhill over the past couple of years? The older Apples were always built to last, but it seems like the newer ones have so many quality issues.

I hate to say this...but it seems as Apple has moved all of their production to China the quality has begun to suffer. I remember at one time you could buy a PowerMac built in the US. Those things were perfect and lasted forever. My first iMac DV was built in Mexico and it is still running today over at the school with 5th graders pounding on it everyday. Then Apple moved stuff to Taiwan and things still seemed ok, but they had a few more issues. Now since their production has moved to China, it seems like a lot of bum products are coming off the line.

Don't flame me. This is just an observation I have made. My iMac G5 Rev. A was a lemon. I have had my new Intel iMac just over a week and I love it so far. It is made in China, but the fit and finish are acceptable and I have not had any issues. I know Apple is like every other company and needs cheap labor, but I hate to see quality suffer.

my brother had a rev A G4 imac and it was problem free for 3 years until he sold it. I had a rev A powermac G5 1.8 single and it was flawless until USPS crushed it while shipping it. My rev A macbook is also flawless in every way.

You can point to all the problems the rev A MBPs have, but look at the rev E 15" powerbook G4. Horizontal lines in *every* powerbook, problems when RAM exceeded 1 GB, and other things I'm forgetting. No such thing as a sure thing.

Only in the 17". And even then, Apple uses several different vendors for optical drives. (Sony, Pioneer, etc.) The 15" MBP uses a slimmer drive, and dual-layer burning hasn't gotten down to that size yet.

I guess I was wrong...some Apple products still come out of the US. But here is the country of origin of Apple products. It appears like it's been awhile since they updated it. I am guessing MacBooks have been moved to China so they are probably dealing with line start-up QC issues as well. I'm not sure about MacBook Pros. The only one that is totally built in the US is the Xserve.

Well, online polls are hardly scientific - we can't be sure unless we visited everyone who answered this poll, and a sample of 50 or so people won't be accurate, but it's the best we have. 11% with serious problems is still too high, but this is not "most people".

So far I've had 100% success rate with Apple products - iPod Photo, Core Duo iMac, iPod Nano and MacBook.

The choice of your screen name makes it clear you have some other issue with Apple that makes you less than objective.

But then again, if you consider the fact that ~30% have some a defect of some type wouldn't be "most people" still, but it sure is "a lot of people".

Just my thoughts.
