Sorry to hear your problems, but it doesn't mean they're all bad. Asustek makes great quality products; so it's not fair to discount the entire company or product line because the three you had may or may not have been problematic.

You said the plastic wasn't lined up on the first one... come on. Plastic is plastic, and people who whine about something like a misaligned piece give Mac users a bad name. You probably could had fixed it yourself by putting a little pressure on the spot. Returning for issues like this make it harder for people with real problems to get any recognition because AppleCare thinks they have a bunch of hardware-hypochondriacs for end-users.

But then again, if you consider the fact that ~30% have some a defect of some type wouldn't be "most people" still, but it sure is "a lot of people".

Just my thoughts.
Define "minor" defect. My Dell Latitude D810 cost $3500 in November (no, I didn't pay for it, it's from work) and it whines, is too hold to touch, has noisy fans that are on at least half the time, and has backlight leakage along the bottom of the LCD. And this in a PC that cost almost 3x my wife's MacBook. But they don't prevent me working with it - in fact I didn't even think about them as defects until I got my Macs, probably because I've been a windows PC user since Windows 3.1 days and have come to expect some issues with every computer.

Any one of these would could as a "minor" defect, and a couple would be counted as major by some people. All four in a Mac would cause the owner to scream about Apple QC failing.

So why do we hold Apple to higher standards than Dell? It's not because that Dell is a cheaper computer, because it's not.

28% with defects however minor (or to put it another way 72% perfect), is probably better than most manufacturers, especially for a totally new design.

Remember, the return rate for the first G5 iMacs was 20%, and for most Apple laptops it has been 10%. Since "major" defect isn't defined in that poll, people would probably interpret that as "defect that would cause you to return it".

it wasn't misaligned, there was a spot where it was bubbling off the bottom of the screen so much that you could see inside. I tried putting pressure on it but there was something stuck inside between the plastic and the screen. i should have taken a picture and posted it so people would understand lol.

plus i paid almost $2000 for it, i dont want to have to be prying at the thing for it to be normal looking

That is probably the biggest fabrication I've ever read. You can get an D820 for $1,049 stock right now. With every upgrade imaginable maybe close to $2k. Only way you're paying that much is if you bought a used car along with it. Let's not exaggerate these prices people...

You're telling me how much the Dell D810 cost in November by comparing it to a base Dell D820 now? Upgraded close to my D810 that's $2700 now (edit: actually $2800 with floppy drive, case, extra PSU and 512MB USB drive). Edit2: OK, in my annoyance at Veritas&Equitas for calling me a liar, I didn't at first think about this ... but I shouldn't have included the extras in the $3500 - so it was $3300-$3400 for the basic machine, still more than 2.5x the price of my wife's MacBook (base model with 1GB RAM)

I specced it out when I got it - it was a maxed out D810, 2.26GHz P-M, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD, 128MB graphics card, bluetooth module, 1920x1200 screen, DVD burner, XP Pro. It certainly cost work less than $3500 buying in bulk, but it would have cost an individual $3500 back then.

Piss off, and don't call me a liar ...

The idea that only people who have problems, post, cannot ever be proven, so can we stop posting it, please? I would love if people would take the issues others have with new Macs seriously instead of writing that "oh, sorry to hear you are one of the FEW that got a faulty one." Most people who buy this stuff will get a faulty one. It's the case with most new Apple products (iPod, ibook G3, MBP, MB), or have you not been paying attention when people talk of Apple's QC going down the toilet the past few years?

Considering that Apple hand-picks all the components and builds the OS to work with them, it is not unreasonable to expect these things to work perfectly from day one of their release.

My Apple purchases in recent years:

iMac G3
iMac G4
eMac
PowerBook G4 12"
iBook G4
PowerMac Dual 1.8
XServe
iPod Nano x 2
iPod 3rd Gen
iPod 4th Gen
iPod 5th Gen
iPod Mini
MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz x 2

Issues I've had with any of the above Apple Products:
None, Nil, Nada, Zilch

Pretty good QC as far as I'm concerned :)

Count your lucky stars with the MBPs. You are either very fortunate or not that picky.

I have purchased 4 iPods, 1 PowerMac G4 Dual, 30" Cinema display and had minimal issues.

I am on my 6 MBP. The first 3 were 15". The last 2 have been 17". I am waiting for my 6th MBP to arrive. Hopefully this one will be a keeper.

Regardless of my MBP problems, I love the machines and will keep returning them until I get one that is acceptable.

I actually posted about the warped casing a little while back. I also posted a pic of it in the thread, so anyone who wants to see it, just take a look. Also, i returned it today and am awaiting a phone call saying my new one is in, since they were all out today. The apple store took it back no questions asked, the assistant manager said that the warping was unacceptable.

I bought two Black Macbooks (one for me, one for the spouse), upgraded to 2GB of RAM in both (from Newegg...only $160 per computer), as well as 7200RPM Hitachi drives ($175 per computer) and have had no problems. In either Windows or Mac OS. Utterly fantastic machines! :)

I must be lucky then :)
Neither MBP has any whines or other strange noises, nor do they get excessively hot (core temp stays around 50-60 with the case warm but not uncomfortably so). Both were BTO 2.16Ghz models - I don't know if that makes a difference?
A friend of mine recently bought a 17" MBP and he's not had any problems either
