iPod This forum is depressing

I remember when the pod forum used to be abuzz with topics and people posting pics of iPods at every release, discussing colors, etc.

Now it's just a forum to talk about the inevitable death of the classic or to show pictures of iPods sealed in boxes.

Obviously few people care about iPods anymore, but damn.:(
 
Let people throw away their money at streaming services. :rolleyes: They'll come crawling back to MP3s once data caps get smaller and smaller or things get crazy.

I miss it too, but I'm sure it's going to come back as the niche product everyone's going to want again.

I think right now an iPod supporting AirPlay will send out music in ALAC format. So it would be up to you to store your music in the best possible format and to buy AirPlay receivers giving the highest possible quality. In other words, a third party device will receive _exactly_ what you put on the iPod, and the iPod sound quality is totally irrelevant at that point.

On the other hand, a used iPhone 3GS with Grado SR60 headphones works quite well for me.

I fear what that would look like:
"Pure gold click wheel to increase aurora fidelity and reduce harmonic distortion at frequencies above 30kHz. Diamond encrusted iPod port to enable your soul to actually hear your music."

Just buy some nice headphones and use ALAC.

Sounds like the dream possession of a dictator addicted to bling bling surrounded by hordes of grovelling sycophants. An eyesore, and insult to taste and decent design......but, hats off, cue applause, what an imagination. ;)

I have unlimited data. And I also have enough room on my iPhone for part of my music library.

Most people have access to wifi at work and at home. Time to embrace the future.

But what about all the places people don't have wifi?
Jogging, in the gym, walking along the street, in the car, on a bus, lots of work places don't have wifi or allow you to use it for non-work purposes...... etc etc...

There is still a good market for the likes of the nano and shuffle. Not everyone wants to run down their phone battery to listen to music.

Yeah my area has yet to even get 3G, never mind 4G. Unlimited data would cost me more than what I can afford. The fastest broadband speed here is 256kb/s. The future isn't at West Yorkshire yet and streaming isn't really a viable option.

Hence I still use my awesome iPod Classic.
 
It truly is a shame... I still use an iPod mini on a near daily basis. I can't stand having my phone also be my music player; it takes up storage space and drains the battery, and I don't want to have to choose between apps/photos/whatever and music, nor have to constantly have my phone on a charger because I killed the battery playing music. :mad:

A dedicated iPod/MP3 player is the best solution, IMO, and it's upsetting most other people don't feel the same. :(

I'm not doubting you or anything, but I do feel the iPod is out to pasture now. It still certainly has value and thus is still for sale, but it's a finished platform.

Sure it does - I've owned one in the past, and there's reasons I no longer do. It's more device than I need, and priced too high for my simple need - playing music. (Heck, even the Classic does too much - Photos? Videos? I need none of this fancy new-age crap. :p)

I totally agree!

I use an iPod Classic and have for years. In fact I just bought a new one as a spare in case Apple silently kills them off.

The click wheel is great, the capacity is fantastic, I like everything about it. It's because of my iPod Classic that I can easily get by nicely with a new 16BG iPhone each year.
 
After Susie-Q breaks her 12th financed iPhone on a 20 year contract, she'll realize that she can't afford such things and get a regular "retro" iPod and still be cool.

This is why I don't buy 2nd hand electronics... :) Just a little too much "love" on them.

That's why I have the 64GB iPhone. Enough to carry plenty of music.

Regretfully, I also have problems with that.
- I have over 100GB of music. 64GB doesn't cut it.
- A phone also has large software and apps, eating into that 64GB.
- I don't want to spend over £600 on something that I'm just going to play music on. I have very little use for a Smartphone, especially with the lack of signal in my area.

A new iPod Classic with a larger SSD and RAW audio support would be simply fantastic for me. Be nice if they also had backlit buttons and maybe a small phone speaker. But since an upgrade model is unlikely, my current Classic is certainly the nearest thing to perfection for my music collection. Like it or not, people still use older devices on a regular basis.

You have to look around, I got an 80 gb ipod video on ebay with upgraded battery and hdd for $120. It looks like it's hardly been used.

Great point, there are tons of places that you can not use wifi, my company recently kicked off all of our devices from the network so I have to use data all the time and I do not have unlimited data. Plus what about all of the places that have crappy cell signals. I also enjoy having the FM tuner which allows me to listen to any local sports game I want to since streaming devices do not allow me to do so and I dont want to pay several hundred dollars for MLB to go or whatever it is called.
 
I love my iPods. Use them everyday. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect Product RED second gen iPod nano. Mmm.
