This morning I had to restart my Mac because my NVMe drive locked up when I tried to access a file. Not my NVMe drive's fault, it works just fine on older systems.

After my restart, go figure, ****ing Spotlight stopped working! I go to a folder, search the folder, and all I get are the file names with blank thumbnails and I can't right click to go to the folder. Trying to open it tells me "The alias can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found" well jesus christ Apple, they're not ***** aliases. This is functionally USELESS. I had this issue before and I had to wait a whole day for it to reindex my drive.

Honestly macOS has become incredibly broken. Finder is absolute trash. Been meaning to make a post about that. How does any of this get put into production? It's regressed so far. I used to be able to go years without Spotlight breaking down. Now I seem to have to reindex every month or so.

Sorry if this seems ranty, I'm just very pissed off. I need to process a bunch of video files and I need Spotlight to be able to find the ones I've tagged and am working on. Now I can't do that because Apple decided to **** the bed ONCE AGAIN.

why do people rant instead of asking for help? the OS isn't a disaster for all of us; there are just some people who have some issues... same as it ever was.

this is a great forum to get (useful) help, even if you're running the betas (which may not be a good idea in this case).

share issues, ask for help. simple

A decade old bug with core storage that affected many users was resolved in 15.x thanks to OWC SoftRAID 8.x

 software development is really bad I noticed while using a windows laptop last autumn.
many things like opening a file, paying music and watching an older mp4 won't work with  software.
they obviously do not care!

I respect your right to rant. It's good for the soul, especially when you find a sympathetic ear.

Bugs increase as complexity increases. The macOS of today is way more complex than it was way back when. But I do wish Apple did a much better job. But heck, everyone wants less bugs and all software has bugs.

I find macOS Sequoia works well at the moment. But, it has been agonizing in the past when some terrible bug reared its head and Apple stayed silent. Some are lucky and aren't impacted. Some are even more lucky by being unobservant or by having low standards.

In this case it seems like the lockup of your drive corrupted Spotlight. You'll have to rebuild. I don't find Spotlight or Time Machine particularly resilient.

not having those issues. perhaps start a thread, ask for help? so much more productive than simply complaining.

why is that so hard for people to grasp? 🤔

I'll try to answer that.

A post that editorializes something is different than one asking for help.

Some people just don't like posts with negative opinions. Often they respond by criticizing the expression of the opinion and then attempt to redirect the conversation. There's nothing wrong with offering help that seems to be needed; that might influence the poster's opinion. But the best way to push back against an opinion you don't like is to offer a counter-opinion, not say that the opinion shouldn't have been expressed.

Sometimes you just need to rant, it feels better afterwards!

However, I have been using Sequoia since the first beta, and I don't recognize that particular problem.

Cheers!

am not talking about opinions, am referencing ranting/whining.

to be fair, i understand the feeling behind the need to rant, but i don't get how, on a public forum filled with smart people, it helps move one forward. i guess some people just need to do that.... 👍

and you keep using your computer without turning it off...... You'll see more freezes in the future.....
The answer is simple - the components are under load. How long the computer will live in such conditions usually depends on the components.

I've got no complaints. Finder or attached storage wise.

Way back, years ago, when Apple first introduced Spotlight as a part of the OS, the first thing I did was TURN IT OFF. I didn't want any of that "indexing" going on with my drives.

I have NEVER used or left Spotlight enabled since.
I have other tools with which to "search for" things.

just curious: why? what is wrong with spotlight? (i do use find any file, but only when i need to go deeper). otherwise, spotlight is immediate & useful (for me).

A negative opinion, when delivered with some negative emotion, is often called a rant. Some prefer to leave emotion out of their posts and some don't (or can't). I respect a poster's choice in that. In person, I'm one of those people who just needs to include emotion when expressing my opinions. When I write, I work hard to filter it out.

Criticism of a rant probably doesn't move the discussion forward. But to be balanced, I have to respect the right to rant against a rant. I guess your question "why is that so hard for people to grasp?" was rhetorical, but I couldn't resist answering. :)

I used to struggle with spotlight. I then moved all my important stuff into DEVONthink and all my search problems went away. Now and again I've had to search outside of that stuff. I've found spotlight helpful in those cases and I think that it's better than it used to be. It's hard to be sure since I use it so much less than back when I was having my struggles.

i can understand when someone who has a problem expresses that in a rant. but the whole 'apple sucks now', 'this OS is the worst ever' etc posts. ie the posts where someone suggests that everything sucks for everyone because they have an issue, just seems... insufferable (to me). but will endeavor to let it go (since it's endless) 🤷

I'm having trouble with spotlight this morning, so I thought I'd share in this thread.

I don't keep my code indexed in DEVONthink. I decided to use spotlight to search within all the files of two projects. It's only finding a small subset of the files of those that are visibly present in Finder. For example, when I search for name ending in ".ts", it only returns two files. There are hundreds. One of the two files that is returned is one that I'm working on now.

As an experiment, I started modifying random files in those projects. As soon as I saved one, it immediately showed up in the search results.

Rebuilding the index would solve it. But, when I'm searching for something and don't find it, it could be because it doesn't exist or because the index needs to be rebuilt. It's impractical to rebuild the index every time I don't find a file that I expect to exist.

This kind of problem was what put me off spotlight.

You're welcome :)

Thank you. I hadn't tried Find Any File before. It made short work of the effort. I've always used EasyFind. For the current search I'm doing, Find Any File worked better.

find any file is great, i use it a lot (again, any time i need to do a deeper search that what spotlight allows)....

Yep, very useful for removing library files, etc. left behind by deleted apps too (just search the startup disk for any file containing that app's name).
