These are the most annoying spiders that venture into homes over here. They're called Huntsman Spiders.

This Huntsman spider was above the back door. It was a warm evening and the heat tends to bring them out. This one is a fairly large example (it's five and a half centimeters from the top of the door frame to the where the roof extends out from the wall to give you an idea) and I have to admit that walking beneath it, in and out of the back door, was quite a tense experience.

Brown Recluse Spiders and GWB, it must be tough living in Texas :D
first off let me say i HATE spiders, not really afraid of snakes or cows but spiders make me shiver. with that being said i grew up on a ranch so i had my fair share of encounters with spiders. black widows been there done that, house spiders slept in bed with me basically (not that i wanted them too they were just there) were i grew its not uncommon to see a taranchula in the middle of the road get on its back legs in attack mode right before you run over it. my dad (whos the rancher) has been bit by so many things its ridiculous. hes been bitten twice bye brown recluse's all that happened to him was the skin died. thats it, im just saying this b/c i dont think there all that bad or maybe hes part spider and doesnt know it yet. but i would avoid them and black widows at all cost. spiders eewwwwwww

hi i am an arachnologist, a person who studies spiders. that looks like a funnel web spider, which is often considered the deadliest spider in the world. its venom is insidious as you dont know youre dead until 2 days later. your internal organs begin to rot and liquify, and mentally you start to disintegrate.

the only antidote is to neuter yourself, as that reduces the amount of testosterone and consequently adrenaline as well. time is of the essense, so hurry before you die!

Damn it's to late now I took your advice and neutered myself with a rusty knife. :)

Somebody said it was a Fake Widow, they are becoming more common in the UK and do bite. The bite I got was far worse than a bee sting but apart from a very large red sore area it was not a real problem. I was also told that most people that think they have been bitten by a spider in the UK are wrong unless you get the spider like I did. Spider bites in the UK are in the hundreds per year not thousands.

Anyway glad to have attracted to many replies. Love the photos of the real nasty spiders.

Thanks all.

As harmless the house spiders and almost (!) all of the other spiders that can be found in Germany are, I can't stand them penetrate the interiors of my house. They are really scary and I made some scary experiences with them in my bedroom when I was younger. The strange thing ist that my dad taught me and my sisters that they are harmless and not to fear them. I remember being a kid I touched some of them (like those DocotrQ's images show), too but now I can't. I also touched a tarantula back in the school days - the only positive experience I had with spiders. I prefer touching a beast like this (feels like the fur of a mouse) instead of the common exemplaries you'll see in your garden or house.
BTW, DoctorQ, the spiders you saw are what we call Cross Spiders. They are harmless, but reeeeaaaally ugly. What is interesting about these spiders is that in the medievals they were considered as a talisman because of their cross on their backs, so having one on the entry of your house was a good sign, because it would protect you from evil spirits.
On another note one has to say that with the changing climate due to global warming there are new species' arriving in Central Europe which actually are not as harmless as the known regional/native spiders: Cheiracanthium punctorium.

a profane existence
Can someone tell me what types these are? - spider #1 - spider #2

They both live in my neighborhood.

I like the colours on the second one.

I enjoy looking at the colourful spiders when outside. But if any are inside the house it's ****ing S*** squash time with a newspaper/book.

Used to have plenty of large house spiders come in through the cat window. Not anymore since it was closed due to no more cats. A few still get in through the garage and other nook and crannies.

LOL. Although I can't stand those eight-legged aliens I don't kill them. I always try to release them living. They might be ugly and scary, but they are also useful since their prey are mostly insects like midges for example.
Maybe I would act differently if the spiders were toxic.

What is true though is the fascinating side of the spiders. As scary they may be, they also attract my interest, looking at them - as long as they are outside in the garden staying away from me.
