Other This years camera upgrade looks significant

I'm surprised he took so long to figure out the camera sensor received a massive increase.

Apple said on day one the pixel pitch went from 1.22um to 1.4um. You plug this into the formula to determine sensor size and it's pretty clear the sensor is now 1/2.55".
 
I loved his review. It made me very excited for the XS Max. Although I’m upgrading from the X, I use my iPhone as my sole camera when I travel now. So I always look forward to camera upgrades.

That’s another ‘finally’ along with stereo recording, the 1/3” sensor they were using was really getting poor for an upper midranger, let alone a flagship/ ultra-premium flagship =P
 
If I could pick only one major thing to upgrade it would be the camera - I've mentioned it in other threads but these reviews are really getting me excited. Going from a 6s I still feel like this is more a want upgrade than a need because it works fine, but these camera improvements are making me even happier that I've taken the plunge.

I have spent the better part of the last hour dissecting both pics, and here’s what I see. In the first picture I see 3 dorks standing in the mouth of a giant clown. In the second pic, however, I see 3 dorks standing in the mouth of a giant clown.

Both pictures convey the exact same message, and evoke the exact same response. Unless you are blowing up pics to display in the gallery that sells your pictures, picture quality in cell phone photos has been irrelevant since about 2010. I truly feel sorry for those who can’t see the forest because they are too busy looking at pixels on trees.

Pixel 2 has more detail but the background blur/bokeh implementation sucks in my experience (or at least it is nowhere near the one in the iPhones). It was so inconsistent. It would do it properly for parts of the images and completely miss other parts (which of course looks terrible). The Note 9 I tried did the same thing. They just can't quite figure it out. iPhone overall is best IMO.

I hope so, I found the iPhone X's camera to be very disappointing. Mainly shots from medium distances in medium lighting come out with serious artifacts, especially if zoomed in any amount. Poorest phone camera I've had in years. Double checked with a few other family members with the X and same results. Still kind of bummed most of my kids pictures will be crappy when I look at them in 20 years.

I am calling BS on these reviews saying the camera is a huge improvement over the X. The verge is claiming this same thing, but the X was amazing. Putting it head to head with the Pixel 2, it was just behind it barely. The Verge claims the Pixel 2 is still better. How is that if it’s such an improvement.

The Verge is the one review I've seen that claims the Pixel 2 is a better camera. A handful of reviews showed side by side shots and the Xs pictures looked better, at least to me. It's also really interesting that Google does the majority of the computational photography magic in the cloud, whereas the Xs does it in real time, on the phone thanks to the A12. Those differences will be felt in real time by people as they use their phones as cameras. Not to mention the depth effect that's made possible by a second, physical camera lens, rather than relying solely on software to optimize photos.

The Pixel 2 camera seems excellent, and I'm sure the Pixel 3 will be even better, but based on the sample photos out there in these reviews, it's clear that the Xs is a solid improvement over the X, and to my eyes at least, looks superior to the Pixel 2.
 
It seems that low light has improved due to the 32% larger sensor, and coupled with the new Smart HDR processing you get some nice improvements overall.

Here's Gruber's most significant comparison. Left is iPhone X, right is iPhone XS. Same shot without any editing, both portrait mode. The Smart HDR processing really shows here.

I am not in love with the Pixel 2 camera. MKBHD did his usual video putting all the big phone cameras from last year up against each other. In the blind test, I picked the iPhone X more than I did the Pixel 2. I will admit though, the Pixel 2 was an amazing camera. My point here being, the iPhone XS is not this huge improvement that these reviews claim that it is. The software is better that is for sure, and I think it makes the photos look fantastic. The problem I have is there is no reason the X couldn’t run that same software. They won’t because then the camera won’t look so good.

I think it very much depends on what is being talked about in regards to the camera. From what I've been reading, those that still prefer the Pixel 2 camera over the new iPhone XS/XR prefer it because of the color temperature, not because it has more detail.

If we're talking about capturing correct lighting/exposure, oh yeah there's a big difference between the X and XR/XS. You're talking about a much larger sensor on the new one. Only so much can be done with software in that regard.

Go look at the pictures The Verge posted. I can’t see this huge difference in the light the XS is capturing.
