I have spent the better part of the last hour dissecting both pics, and here’s what I see. In the first picture I see 3 dorks standing in the mouth of a giant clown. In the second pic, however, I see 3 dorks standing in the mouth of a giant clown.

Both pictures convey the exact same message, and evoke the exact same response. Unless you are blowing up pics to display in the gallery that sells your pictures, picture quality in cell phone photos has been irrelevant since about 2010. I truly feel sorry for those who can’t see the forest because they are too busy looking at pixels on trees.
Seriously? You can’t see any meaningful difference since the iPhone 4? I’m f that’s the case then you just don’t care about photography, which is fine, but maybe realize that others do..

I am calling BS on these reviews saying the camera is a huge improvement over the X. The verge is claiming this same thing, but the X was amazing. Putting it head to head with the Pixel 2, it was just behind it barely. The Verge claims the Pixel 2 is still better. How is that if it’s such an improvement.

Does the X shot have HDR enabled? It looks like it doesn’t.

I’m sure there are improvements with the Xs camera over the X. No doubt about that. Is it worth upgrading from the X though? Nope. At this point if it’s not as good as the Pixel 2 then who cares.

He mentioned both were just point and shoot, so I guess it would depend on his settings for the X. In regards to overall camera quality, I personally found the Xs photos to be superior to the Pixel 2 in most cases, or on par at least. This idea to me that "the Xs isn't even on the level of the Pixel 2" seems overblown from one review, where even that reviewer says "it will largely depend on personal preferences".

Feels like I'm trying to carry Apple's water here, and I'm not...It's just pretty clear that the Xs cameras are a significant upgrade in both hardware and software, so I'm not sure if it's just X owners trying to overcompensate for not upgrading, or what...

FWIW Gruber has said multiple times in the past that he does keep Auto HDR enabled. He rarely ever posts photos but was so surprised by the difference from the X to XS in that low light situation that he put them in his review.

There’s definitely a lot of work happening with the new Smart HDR. I mean they spoke about it a lot during the keynote, all the work happening when a photo is taken - 7 different exposures taken, all of them being combined, etc. 1 trillion operations happening in that neural engine within the A12 or whatever it is. Really shouldn’t be surprising that the XS does better than the X. And if there is a significant improvement with HDR that’s awesome. But also doesn’t mean the owner of an X should rush out to upgrade, and I don’t think that’s what anyone is really saying.

The iPhone X’s Max, is the screen resolution output 1080P or 4K? I just don’t know.

The physical screen resolution of the XS Max is 1242x2688.

MKBHD XS review is up and his camera review echoes The Verge's. It's an amazing upgrade from the X, and comes up second place behind the Pixel 2.

Was hoping for camera improvements and glad to see reviewers are finding better pictures taken. The only thing I missed about my Pixel 2 when using my X was the camera for photos. I found the Pixel to take better photos. But I hugely prefer using my X for everything else.

It seems that low light has improved due to the 32% larger sensor, and coupled with the new Smart HDR processing you get some nice improvements overall.

Here's Gruber's most significant comparison. Left is iPhone X, right is iPhone XS. Same shot without any editing, both portrait mode. The Smart HDR processing really shows here.

Wow. That’s major!

If you actually cared about photography, you wouldn’t be taking photos with a cell phone.

I think some people are getting a little over-defensive about this upgrade compared to their X. Yes, the X is still a great camera - the point is most of the time camera upgrades on the iPhone are pretty incremental, I can still take amazing photos with my 6s and in some cases with perfect lighting you wouldn’t notice much difference between that and a photo from the X.

The main point here is that for a year-on-year update this is a bigger jump than normal. No one is saying the X sucks.

I see significant improvements on the face of the clown. Particularly the nose. The area behind the people (where the sign is) is also less blown out.

I'm sure opinions will differ on how important those subtle differences are. If it turns out to be a true improvement and not just a couple of lucky shots, I may reconsider upgrading this year.

This.

Some people are happy that their photos show the main subject and certain objects blowing out don’t matter to them. To me, it matters a lot. It means that the phone isn’t completely useless when shooting in the direction of the sun. It means indoor lighting doesn’t destroy pictures. It means that in tricky lighting situations I don’t have to process the crap out of it to get a good image. Yes, in all those circumstances you will still be able to see people and that’s ok if that is all that matters to you. For me though, these changes are terrific, assuming they are not one-offs as you say.

Then you're out of the conversation.

I always wonder why people who openly admit to not knowing much about a subject feel the need to wade in with their admittedly worthless opinion on it.

Not passionate and knowing subject are two very different things. In the context of the the misquote you made, I was speaking to not being angry about disagreeing over the camera. As for knowledge, I have plenty.

How about next time you quote me, understand what I am saying instead of blindly taking a piece of a statement to fit your argument. I always wonder why people half quote people, and complete lose the context of what someone was saying.

I agree. Hard to trust a review from a long time Apple kiss ass

It’s funny to me because Nilay is constantly dumping on Apple in the weekly Verge Cast Podcast. But they do anything to get love from Apple to stay in their good graces. I prefer MKBHD as a reviewer. His XS and Xs max review was much better. While still saying the camera on the new phone was an upgrade. He said there was no need to upgrade to the Xs if you have X. Sure the camera is an improvement, but not so much that the X is trash.

After reading the mashable review I'm convinced the XS camera is much better than the X.
I'm hyped!

Lordy. It's a snapshot posted as an example to show the greater dynamic range from the XS, it's not meant to be fine art.

Pot, kettle.
