I think it will be october for iPads. I can’t see Apple announcing three phones, AirPower, a wireless AirPod case, new Apple Watch, new iPads and new MacBooks at the same event and all in the space of two hours. I think there will be an October event for iPads and MacBooks. September’s event will focus on phones, the next gen watch and a wireless AirPod case because those devices can be charged by AirPower which they will announce at well
Unless they switch iPad and MacBook to September and everything you mentioned to October. Sure it’s tradition but not a rule. The low cost MacBook, and arguably the IPP as laptop replacement, is marketed to students. September is when people go back to HS and Uni. Lots of potential lost sales here. Tech savvy buyers (younger folk do keep track of rumors ) won’t buy the current models with a near guarantee of something new , drastically new, coming in a month.

Or ... wishful thinking because I’d like the new 12.9 this September :)

Well in less than 4 weeks time we will know
I am really looking forward to this years event

I already gave my 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9 to my sister like a year ago so I'm ready. This is going to be the biggest iPad release since the first iPad in 2010. Slimmest bezels of any tablet out, Face ID, no home button, one of the most powerful CPUs in a tablet.

I don't know who else here is in the same boat as me, but I've been borderline about to get a Surface Pro. But I have a good feeling about this iPad release so we'll see. Just hope iOS 12 is more productivity friendly!

Never. I am taking online classes. I like to use my 9.7" iPad to watch videos while taking notes with my bigger 12.9" iPad. Sure I can do both with my bigger iPad but I like to use the whole screen real estate.

Post in a different thread got me thinking. September sounds jam packed but not really.

3 iphones. It won’t take up as much time as last year. What’s really new to demo? The X stays the same, maybe minor upgrades. X+ is a bigger X. The 6.1 is a cheaper low specCed X

AirPower? They’ve already done the announcement and marketing. Just say it’s ready to order with a date. Same with the AirPods wireless case. Are we expecting AirPods 2?

Apple Watch is the new product really. And even there, it’s losing beZels and adding a bit of screen size.

The star of the show and the real all new product is the iPad.

They could easily fit all of this in 2 hours and maaaaaybe even have time for a one more thing.

iMacs and Mac mini get a silent upgrade in October.

Let’s see.

I had the same thought and am even thinking they have time to fit a spec bump and price drop on the MacBook.

True. Price drop spec bump on the MB. I think the one more thing will be the “education” focused low new machine. There haven’t been too many leaks on that front. The iPad changes have been expected and anyway that’s TWO more things :)

I have a 10.5 iPad Pro lte with 256gb hd and two 100+ plus keyboards. And Apple care. The numbers just don’t work to sell it. What would I get? Maybe 400 if I’m lucky. They simply don’t retain their value like other Apple products.

You could easily get 450 for the iPad, and 75 for each keyboard (if they are the Smart Keyboard—not sure about the others). If you sell on swappa you could likely get more than that for your iPad. I sell used iPads often and got over 400 for my 64 WiFi only last week with no accessories.

Or. Of your happy with what you have. And everything works fine. Keep it. Your setup won’t automatically become obsolete in September.

This is correct. I got more than that for my 64 GB 10.5 + ASK. Going rate on Swappa right now for the base model is about $440.

On a different note seems like they’ve clamped down on leaks eh? Besides the basics there’s not too many rumors out there. I’m 80% expecting a smart kB 2 and Pencil 2 but there’s radio silence on that front.

I never sell/trade-in devices until the replacement is on-hand. My older devices usually get handed down to family (immediate or extended).

Same here. The only device that I've ever sold to an outside party was my iPad Mini 4 when I got the 2018 iPad to replace it. Even for that I was able to get $350 CDN (equivalent to about $270 USD). That's the thing about Apple devices, they keep their value.

I'll sell it once I get my new Pro. My iPad is my work computer. Not too worried about it as it's only a couple hundred bucks either way.
I'm starting to feel the same as you--and I've seen you say this in other places too. When you think about what you usually get for trading up compared to what you pay total after selling the old one, the cost to upgrade every year is not that steep. Between that and how easy and inexpensive Verizon has made it to upgrade my iPhone every year, I basically get a full refresh on my iOS devices yearly. This year I'm upgrading my Apple Watch too, so Xmas is coming early for me.

Considering my iPhone and iPad are my only computers, the upgrade costs are very minimal. It costs me about $200 a year to upgrade my iPad, and I spend about $500 a year on a new iPhone. $700 per year is really not that much in my eyes for the amount of productivity I get done with both. My ROI is much much higher.

You can spend your money any way you want, god knows I like my toys too. But I doubt your productivity goes up that much by spending 700 bucks a year to upgrade. We’re on a flat curve now when it comes to tech. Law of diminishing returns. Heck I bought the X abroad paying an absurd amount of extra cash but it’s my hobby and I didn’t care. Wanted it. Productivity and utility? My 2016 7+ would have continued doing a damn fine job and could potentially work for another year.

I’ve slowed down my upgrade cycle on tech. 2.5 years when warranties run out is when I start looking.

That's a fair point. I just look at my overall revenue return and compare that to $700 for the year. I enjoy using my iOS devices for work so much more than I ever did with macOS/Windows. For me, the upgrade is worth it.

Totally. Not judging at all mate. I have an addiction too. Just raised my eyebrow at the productivity part :)

Heck a round of drinks these days costs 59 bucks minimum. Pack of smokes is 12. 60 bucks a month over a year for indulging your passion? Why the hell not. Get the new phone and iPad.

My weakness is always iPads. I have always upgraded them more often than anything else. Back in the 2 year contract days, I was always happy to just go every other year on iPhone upgrades. I've never bought the latest and greatest Macs. My Apple Watch is still a series 0 (thought it's definitely being replaced this year). But there's something about iPads, especially when it's an upgrade as big as what this year's is looking like it could be---I just can't resist. I've actually had just as many iPad models as iPhone models in my possession, and I started buying iPads much later in the game than I did iPhones.

It really only started for me when I sold my MacBook and moved to iOS only for work and personal use. Since then, I have simplified my workflow and have seen big advantages in productivity, costs, collaboration, flexibility, etc. I see a couple hundred dollars a year to take advantage of the newest devices extremely minimal for the return I get. I am with you though, love the iPad.

My thoughts as well ;). I have a 9.7 inch Pro, and I use it as my laptop. It's working fine, albeit a bit slow, but I won't sell it until the new ones are out AND they've been out a month or so such that the new adopters have worked out the kinks for me! I'm so looking forward to a new iPad, new keyboard, maybe new pencil too!

On another note, I'm not too concerned about resale value, especially on a unit as old as mine. For me, these items are fungible and not that expensive in the big picture. I expect to get a few dollars for it by selling to Gazelle, which I can use to offset the cost of the new one or purchase an accessory.

I’ll be pinging you guys again when I have the IPP in hands. Decided to move all my mobile needs to iOS as well. I bought a thinkpad fall 16 because the MBPs were ***** with horrid keyboards. It’s overpowered for my mobile needs or as a writing machine. iPad is. Plus laptops have become meh. iPads seem more fun.

I’ll probably always keep an OSX machine around. Do need large screens to edit etc but I think an IPP/iMac would work great.

I'm with you on the productivity increase. It's been a game-changer with real, tangible advantages. If you charge by the hour, like I do, the iPad combined with Cloud services and an Office 365 subscription allows me to do my work essentially anywhere, and be more productive. Lets just say I can make back your $700 in less than 2 hours of increased productivity. ;) That the iPad is just a delight to use is icing on the cake!
