Give my recent predicament, I now have to execute my contingency plan of in-store pickup. How early are people planning to get in line? I'm thinking of showing up around 6am or so at the Apple store in Arlington, VA (Clarendon). Anyone think that's too early/not early enough?

I'm right with you. I'll be over at Aspen Grove (Littleton, CO) at 6 am. I was there for the store opening, I camped out for the iPhone 3G and I see no reason to not wait 3 hours for the iPad. It's always nice to be around other (dedicated) mac users...

I'll be at the Tysons store...... At least we can wait indoors there! For the 3G I arrived at 5:30 AM but that was, of course, first-come-first-served only, there were no reservations back then. This time at least I've got a reservation and my primary reason for getting there early will be to ensure that I can also get the accessories I want. I'm thinking I'll probably get there around 6:30 or so this time.

I live in DC and don't have a car, so Tyson's is incredibly difficult to get to. I'm going to have my wife take me in a Zipcar to Clarendon at 5:30 or so, and I'll take the Metro home.

Are you guys doing this for fear of not getting one if reserved? or just to avoid having to wait?

For me it's both. I want to make sure I get one, and I also don't want to be there all day long.

I'm doing it to avoid the wait. I'll be at the store hopefully by 7 - 7:30am, depending on when the Mall opens.

I don't think you have to worry about not getting one if you reserved... I can see the not wanting to wait. I am thinking about going early, the Apple Store is in the mall and I have had hard times with mall security in the past, once my car was surrounded by 5 squads cause I was parked lol. I might make a go of it at 6 or 7.

As an Apple Fan Boy I think it would be fun just to be there early to talk with other Apple enthusiasts. I made a couple friends over the various iPhone launches.

I have to work that afternoon so I want to get in the store, get my iPad, get my accessories, return home and have a little time to play with my new "toy" before I have to head off to work.....

Thats a good reason :) Hope your not taking it to work though, the temptation to run off to a corner and play would be great.

Nope, not taking it to work with me that first day because, yep, it would toooo tempting to keep stepping in the back room to play with it, and that's not what I'm being paid for! LOL! I figure that as it is I'll probably have my mind on it the whole afternoon anyway so probably won't be as functional as I usually am. That's one night I'll be hurrying right home from work, you can be sure!

i set up an appointment to pick it up at 10am. so ill be showing up there around....10am. anybody else get an appointment time?

the apple store I am going to doesn't have appointments that day, I see a star with 10-5 then from 5-6 pm it shows iPad learning course. Thats it for the 3rd.

I plan on showing up around 8am (an hour before they open). I'm going early because I am going out of town that day for easter weekend, so for me the sooner the better, but I don't see the need to show up at 6am if I have a reservation.

Over night.

Just kidding. I won't even be getting an iPad this time around. I had planned on it though.

I plan on getting there an hour before the reserve opening. I don't see the point of getting there earlier unless you have to be somewhere at 11a.

I don't see why people would get there hours before 9 if they have a reservation. I'm thinking that there might be a line, but it should move pretty quickly once the doors open at 9 am. Also, as long as you get in line by 3 pm, I've heard you are gauranteed an ipad, even if you are still waiting there past 3 pm.

I'm planning on getting there right around 9 am.

I would be pissed it I got there and they didn't have the one I reserved. I'm going to get there around 10, hopefully they're smart enough to have a section for people to pick theirs up so you just walk in and you're out in 5 minutes.

Well, one thing that we've seen a lot is people saying "It'll go much faster since there's no activation like the iPhone...", however, it seems sales reps will be helping people set up and configure their iPads:

Apple also announced that all customers making iPad purchases in its retail stores will receive free Personal Setup service, which includes assistance from Apple staff with setting up email accounts on the device, loading applications, and other tasks.

The only reason to be there early is for the possible goodie bags if they're going to be handed out. Hopefully, I will be at the Richmond, VA store around 8 - 9ish am. It's going to be a long 1.5hrs of anticipation while driving to the store for me. When I get there, I'm going to bribe the person infront of me with coffee from Starbucks if they save my spot for me while I go get some coffee a few stores down. Hopefully, Starbucks won't be packed & slow as usual that early in the morning.
