My iPad is used solely for consuming video (Netflix/Hulu/HBO Max, etc.) and some social media, web browsing and email.

My MBP is mainly for image processing in LR and PS. I will work in MS Office occasionally as well. But I like to think of it as my more formal machine.

It seems like most people are talking about the M1 MBA, but there is also the M1 Mac mini. I would be interested to hear from people with an iPad for mobile and M1 Mac mini for desktop. This seems like a pretty versatile combination.

I envision carrying around an iPad Air with pencil for reading PDFs, annotating documents, and taking notes in meetings etc.. The desktop Mac is for heavy lifting back at the office/den.

That used to be me. I traded my Intel Mini, without much thought, for the M1 Air.

But, I’ve since moved all my local stuff to various online clouds. I do no more ‘heavy lifting’. My work, MS office at work, everything I do I can do from a browser Or app on iPad. I take advantage of the M1, because I bought it, in a year I’ll likely give to one of my teens, and upgrade to the most recent largest screen iPad that is available. My iPad currently is Gen 3 air. Rest of fam is on Gen 4.

I’ve been thinking of going that route and remote in whenever I feel I want to do something where I need Windows/Mac OS. I am only contemplating if I need a Mac Mini for that or if I could use my gaming desktop or just upgrade my Windows server.

Returned my M1 Air now and will most likely get the 12.9” iPad Pro when they update it.

It really wouldn't be much different from people who use an iMac at home and an iPad when outside (which is basically me). Excellent combination, plus you get the versatility of using your own display.

This is my setup now except with an iPad Pro, I commented previously on the thread my usage. It has worked well for me and I haven’t missed the laptop at all

This has been my plan. I have mobile part done with the iPad Air and now just need to get a desktop.

My hesitation with the M1 Mac mini is wondering what the new iMac will be!
Of course more expensive, but I’ve always had an iMac of some sort in the home for decades. I’m not in any rush, so I’ll wait and see.

One point however is that the iPad Air is fine for most applications, but sometimes a larger display would be welcomed. The 12.9 would put it on par with the 13” MBA in terms of size and be laptop replacement (somewhat).

Then if I had the funds, pick up an 8th gen iPad for pure content consumption. ?

Own a Macbook Air M1 and Ipad Pro 12.9 inch 3rd Gen. I use both daily and depends on my needs as to which one I go to. There is not a one fit all solution with any device. When I am hosting a Teams/Zoom meeting I tend to use my Macbook as prefer to hook up my iPhone as an external camera or use a Mirrorless camera and have more versatility that way as can do a bit more because of the operating system. If though I am just a guest in Zoom/Teams I prefer to use my iPhone or Ipad as the camera quality is better. I, however, prefer using Ipad for writing using Ulysses or mind mapping with ithoughts. Reviewing PDFs is also alot easier as can use touch, apple pencil. With Safari on Ipad OS, I can use a lot of tools through the web browser and do use it for doing web work on WordPress. I much prefer photo and video editing on my iPad though Mac offers additional functionality with some aspects. There are apps on both systems that I like which you cannot get as a universal app. We as consumers have so many great choices and I don't view an Ipad as a laptop but a device in its own bracket. Both Ipads and Macbooks have their pros and cons,so use whatever suits your workflow.

I asked this in another thread and got 1 answer. Thought I might try my luck here...

I currently own a selfbuilt PC for gaming (usually) and the occasional video etc. But sitting in an office-chair watching content is not that "fun" so to speak.

I'm thinking an iPad Pro for content, some productivity, i've already got an Apple Pencil from Apple as a "we're sorry for ****ing up a thing". The only other product i currently own is an Apple TV and an iPhone.

Should I go for the 11" or the 12,9"? The cost between then is a non-issue. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Will mostly be used around the house, maybe take it with me occasionally.

I have a gaming machine but it also has a 34" ultra widescreen monitor which means I can watch films in true 21:9 (no borders) prefer it to an IPP.

If I was you and you want to watch content then go for the new 12.9" IPP A. you can't beat real estate for immersion B. I am sure the new screen is amazing (regardless of bloomgate©).

The 11 is very capable for working in a solo app and productivity apps the bonus is it is very easily held and positioned with one hand and laying in bed reading or watching videos.

The 12.9 is harder to hold and use off desk, but is much more suited for dual app usage, which will be greatly improved in iPadOS 15. (Side by Side and slide over use)

Both are immersive computing experiences. If you can't go to a store and hold and test both cut out cardboard and see how much bigger that 1.9" adds up to be.

This is kinda one of those things that you won't really know until you try. I use both but for bed or couch, I find the 10-11'' sizes easier when I need to interact with the screen (smaller reach).

For watching videos though, the larger 12.9" is really nice.

100% agree. Having tried both sizes extensively for both content creation and consumption, I would say you're spot on. Your second point is what kind of drove me away from the 12.9" iPad Pro. It was not nearly as good of a tablet for my tastes as I thought it would would end up being. I loved using it as a laptop, but then started ONLY using it as a laptop because I found it too inconvenient to deal with otherwise. And then I started feeling like maybe I bought the wrong kind of machine this time and switched back to a Mac full time.

I still love iPads so much though. Right now I'm back on my old mini, but I think there is an Air in my future sometime.

My M1 iPad Pro will be the secondary device to my M1 iMac when it arrives. ( mobile & home)

I use the iPad for all things social & content consumption, emails, digital document signing & annotation , note taking as well as article & publication reading but book reading more on my 12 Pro Max. Even the Kindle is completely neglected.

I have always been a desktop person never a laptop user aside from my work device. My M1 iMac replaces my AIO Wins 10 desktop hence my first Mac.

My avatar was the M1 MBA I bought at launch but returned as I could not stop taking a swipe at the screen. Back then with a 2020 12.9“ iPad Pro, there was absolutely no justification for keeping the M1 MBA knowing fully well I needed a desktop as my primary device.

I use my M1 CTO air for every day use; however as I am unable to use Microsoft Visio of line. I have just purchased a 16” MacBook Pro again to do that job.

My iPad Pro 11” m1 is mainly a web browsing as I prefer it to using my 12 pro max.

My 12.9” 1Tb iPad Pro is awaiting its replacement 2tb counterpart. What will it be used for being honest nothing more than the current one which gets used as a movie machine a few times a month when I am away for work.
