As most of you know I'm an outspoken advocate of the Note 4 which will probably be my next phone. This is with the major caveat that I have never physically handled either the Note 4 or either of the new iphones so my mind was never made up 100%.

I finally got the chance to take a peek at the iPhone 6 physically as I was in the mall to attempt a preorder on the Note 4, more on that in a bit. My initial impressions of the new iphones from pictures and videos were that it looked cheap, the plastic antenna strips were gaudy and horrible, the bezels were huge and unnecessary and made the phone look larger than it should have been.

Actually feeling one in store my opinion has changed in some ways, and not changed in other ways. This is mostly an aesthetic assessment, which is VERY personal and everyone will have different feelings:

antenna lines: On the black model with the grey back they weren't as terrible as I thought. They were very flush with the aluminum, the color did stick out but not as garishly as in pictures, and the plastic felt high quality, still it kind of felt like a step down in quality when I rubbed my finger on the aluminum and came to the plastic strip. On the gold and silver models the antenna lines looked horrible, especially the gold model, the difference in color was just absolutely horrible.

Bezels: They are still pretty huge. On the black model it's acceptable because you can't really see them unless the screen is on, and even then they blend in well. I personally could deal with the bezels on the black model. On the white models they look stunningly horrible, just awful. Combined with the chrome surround on the home button and that bezel was just a shining beacon which would easily be used as a light house to bring ships home.

Thinness: Wow, I'm impressed, especially with the reports of battery life. I put my Note 3 next to it and noticed a substantial difference, and the Note 4 is supposed to be just a tiny hair thicker. The thinness and narrowness made it feel a tiny bit better in the hand than the Note 3, it felt a tiny bit lighter although I don't have the specs in front of me.

Overall feel: The iPhone plus feels very nice, it's got that smooth cold metal feel. That may be a negative though. With the stories about the phone bending, that's a concern. Also I could see that backing and sides getting scratched the instant I walked out of the store if the scratchability (is that a word?)of the 5s is similar. This phone just screams for a case, and that's a negative to me, negating the thinness factor and the nice aluminum feel factor. Maybe a rear plastic screen protector might work like a full body armor suit, but I'm not sure you can really stick much to the curved sides.

In conclusion I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. Enough where it has earned some consideration over the Note 4. I'm also having difficulty with the Note 4 in terms of dealing with a locked bootloader through ATT which may sway me away from it and Samsung. In the end it's great to have decisions like this.

Good review.

I'm checking out the plus on Friday the same day I'm planning to pre order the note 4..interested how I like it.

Don't like the thought of a bendy phone though:)

I like it very much, don't have anything negative to say about it. very close in size to my GS4, 'pocketable'

slomo video is cool

All my issues are software related.

Don't even think about it spinedoc! :p

As much as I like the iPhone, even I wouldn't recommend it to you, considering how you use your smartphone. It may be pretty enough but you'd get irritated pretty damn quickly with iOS.

Yes, AT&T locking the bootloader and their bloatware is a royal P.I.T.A. but it'll still be a better use experience for you. Just means you might have to live with a little of that bloat. ;)

AMEN.

Great post, thanks. I wish everyone one in this subforum would be able to share their views and experiences without having to resort to taking cheap shots at one of the alternatives.

I can't deny I wasn't slightly tempted, the iPhone is a really nice looking and nice feeling package. In the end I decided against though, I'm not sure if I could take 2 steps backwards in terms of the functionality of the OS, not to mention missing my Spen, multi windows/multi tasking and widgets. From a beauty standpoint I think many of the iphones pluses were negated by the need for a case. The beautiful aluminum back and the thinness would be gone the second I slapped a plastic case on it. In a perfect world if I could just have the iPhone naked it would have been a tougher decision.

Preordered a Tmobile note 4 to be used on AT&T, this one most likely will have an unlocked bootloader and I'll be able to tinker on it to my heart's content.

Apple's leather case is gorgeous though. In fact I think it complements the phone's design so well that it looks even better with one of those on. For me personally, one of the points in favor of the iPhone is actually that they have that case. I hate that no-one makes a similar premium leather case for any of the Note phones, all good leather cases I can find are flip cases. :(

Mine too. I flip back and forth on a fairly regular basis and there are just some things that get to me about iOS. First is the lack of back button. I keep reaching for it on my iPhone 6 only to discover I need to use the home button if I want to go back between apps. Not a huge deal... as I'll get used to it over time again. Next is Apple's archaic dealing with apps/the home screen. Why can't I just have an app drawer? This is honestly my biggest complaint. It would be so simple to default the app to the home screen upon download with the option to relegate it to an app drawer later. Or even give me an option to turn it on in settings where most users will not mess around with it (if that is what Apple is concerned with). I also find Google Now to be infinitely more useful than Siri and it was one of the first things I downloaded. Finally is the way Swiftkey operates. I'm not sure if it is Apple's guidelines or on Swiftkey's end but there seem to be features missing that I greatly miss (like holding a button for a little longer to access a number or symbol.

Overall, I really am more satisfied with this iPhone than any previous one I have owned. I think it is a combination of the larger screen and iOS being slightly less restricted. I hope Apple continues to move towards opening up to 3rd parties as I would love to set my own defaults again.

I have a Note 3 and was surprised at how well Apple did a big phone (sans bendergate). It's designed so beautifully, that's why I decided to order mine.

Don't think it will happen much with these new cases, since the bottom end is open and doesn't have those narrow parts that cracked on the 5/5s cases.
Probably not, I was referring to the leather top coat wearing away, sorry not very clear.

Wouldn't it be nice if Apple did an iPhone running Android.

Know where you are coming from. Think we are in the same boat on how we use our device.

Thoughts on actually feeling an iphone in store today

antenna lines: On the black model with the grey back they weren't as terrible as I thought. A nice honest review and its nice to see an Android user who has held one before giving their opinion for once. Thumbs up!

I guess the bolded part is subject to personal opinion. I bought a Silver one and my wife a Gold and I have to say the antenna lines add to its aesthetic beauty for me. I wish some of my product design was as well thought out, or at least my boss does! I thought using white for these lines on the gold compliments it more, but also remaining quite subtle too? We all have different tastes of course :)

Where did you get the case. Is it soft?

My preferred case as well. Used two different ones over the past year on my 5S, red and black. The new one for the 6+ is great as well.

Neither of my 2 leather cases showed any signs of the top leather flaking away.

Will they discolor over time like the 5/5S and iPad cases?

Probably, but leather will almost always show signs of aging. My red leather case did change in appearance quite a bit but I expected that result going in. If someone wants a case that will be pristine in appears after longtime use, leather isn't you choice.

Disagree--the front of the space gray models is the best looking part of the phone--smooth black glass, very monolithic, with the ever so slight taper off the edge.

Included a few very quickly taken photos of my 6+ in the black leather case, as well as another of my favorite side of the phone.

That looks really nice. I might get one for my phone.
