Yes, I use my iPhone X in the same way if there’s decent light and there’s an opportunity for a quick shot. Always in raw. It’s still a long way from replacing my other gear in both how I shoot and in image quality and really, I’m not specifically looking for it to do so. But it is definitely part of my arsenal and I enjoy watching the improvements each year. I work in machine learning and AI and while very little of what I do is image related, I try and keep up with what’s happening in that space. Interesting stuff indeed.
What are your thoughts on apples local machine learning vs googles cloud-sourced machine learning?

What are your thoughts on apples local machine learning vs googles cloud-sourced machine learning?

It’s very effective. Because Apple isn’t specifically trying to sell advertising they don’t need data that identifies your device. Local differential privacy with randomized data being used by Apple to potentially train image categorization models, for example, works well. AI for image processing, building depth maps and lighting tweaks can be done locally with a model that Apple has trained and then deployed on devices. It may not always be as fast at achieving what googles models do with the vast array of our data they have on hand, but it’s one of those necessity-is-the-mother-invention things: when the focus is privacy you have to think outside of the box a bit to solve complex problems.

Developers with the new version of iOS/macOS can now build apps that will do more training locally across images, language and text, so this should help bump up Apple’s velocity. Both Google and Apple have very smart folks so looking forward to seeing what they can do.

As a photographer ...
- It's about time we get OIS for the "telephoto" lens
- The "ultra wide" addition is nice - but no OIS there
- I don't know what kind of image processing Apple has given us yet but I'd be happy if they finally give us an automated highlight overexposure solution
- Still stuck at 12 mp for some reason though

I'll post my thoughts / impressions soon, as I get my 11 Pro 512GB at 11:30am edt
>>I'm upgrading from a 7+ 256GB model.

At this time I will keep my Canon 70D and the various lens/flash/etc ....but, more and more I use my lovely DSLR less and less

Night mode , resting on porch railing, if handheld not crisp

Stock night mode can’t capture crescent moon well , still overexposed.
I was hoping for proper moon exposure + sky then blend ... all on the fly ... the software not there yet

Colors of stars lost ... their not all white, DSLR captures that

I must say the color reproduction is really good. Taking the images into Lightroom, there is barely any adjustments needed.

I don't like the design, I feel like there's a better way to work on the camera set up, but in terms of its feature, my sister told me that the image quality is way better than what Samsung Galaxy S10 can capture. I am just not that sure iPhone 11 Pro can surpass the specs of the new Huawei Mate 30 Pro. It has always been a competition among these three tech giants.

I've seen pics and I'm impressed. Now would it replace my DSLR? I think not. But it would be fun to use.

Got my Pro Max last week and finally got to play with it yesterday, quite impressive... I’m traveling this week so will post some pics into the POTD thread during the week
