Do you think apple is going back the old trend of differentiating the 2 pro models like they used to on the 6s/6s+, 7/7+ and 8/8+. This year’s 12 pro max has substantially better cameras than the regular pro, and that shows in the camera comparisons between the 11 pro and the 12 pro, which show very minor improvement of the latter over the former. That with the better battery life just make the 12 pro not worth at this point. If you look at the 11 pro and 11 pro max for example, they were essentially the same phone, just different sizes.

Now the question that begs itself, do you guys think we’re gonna continue seeing that differentiation take place in the upcoming lineup in 2021?

Personally I think next year, the 13 pro is gonna have the current 12 pro max’s camera hardware features, but next generation of course, making it on par with its bigger brother the 13 pro max only if they don’t equip that with an even bigger sensor, better telephoto lens and a better sensor shift stabilization system (so basically improved 12 pro max camera system but in both the 13 pro and 13 pro max models). As for the battery life, the bigger is always gonna have it better in that regard, and that’s okay it is what it is, you can’t defy physics. But the rest of the hardware features; I believe apple could offer them in a 6.1” footprint, but this year they just chose not to..?

What do you guys think?

I personally think they are way over using the “Pro” name. The regular 12 Pro should not have the Pro name and reserve that for the best that’s offered. The Pro name is just to enable them to charge more for them. I’m a part time photographer and there is no way I’d show up to do a paid shoot and pull out any IPhone.

And I wouldn't pull out a Playstation 4 Pro to do development work. Pro is just a marketing term - and not just in Apple world. "Pro" just means "Premium". That's it.

Also, the fact that you can't use an iPhone for professional work, doesn't mean no one can. I know a lot of 3D artists that use them to sample textures, I know content creators that use them to record video, I even know photographers who use them on their travels when no other camera is around. Just saying. Either way, again, "Pro" is just a marketing term. And regular iPhone 12 Pro is more premium than iPhone 12, ergo the "Pro" moniker.

Some past rumours have indicated the pro-max model in 2021 will be portless whilst other models won't be. If this comes to fruition, it's an example of an "exclusive feature". Now having no port alone isn't really a great selling feature, since you're losing not gaining something; so for this to be true, it could be the case next years pro max has other extra features or spec improvements which distinguish it from the standard pro, aside from being portless. I think the emphasis on the larger camera lens this year on the pro max is an indication of a trend apple wishes to push in the future; they want a "halo" model device comparable to the s20 ultra, but perhaps without the absurd pricing.

16” mbp has more features and better specs than the 13” version? Why? Because more space to work with. More room for better speakers, cooling for faster processors, ports, etc.

If you’re buying something that has more space and room for better specs wouldn’t you want that? If apple made it the same specs as it’s smaller version then they’re simply gimping it intentionally and not making the best product it can in that size.

xs max and 11 pro max are gimped then since they’re identical to their younger siblings 😕

I always saw it as a good thing that the XS/11 Pro phones were identical in features between sizes. At $1000, I should not feel like I’m missing out on the best features because I don’t want a huge iPhone. I still bought the regular pro anyways, so I guess I’ll wait for the 12 Pro Max features to arrive in the future to the smaller sibling.

They’ll definitely bring the current 12 pro max features to the next generation smaller pro, but then again.. they’ll still give the 13 pro max a better camera and god knows what else 🤷🏻‍♂️. So the gap is probably always gonna be there.

I guess at the top end they start with the most/best stuff they can possibly get into the Max, and then they figure out if the same is possible in the regular Pro. If it is, both models will be feature identical (11 Pro/Max), if it isn‘t, they won‘t (12 Pro/Max). As I prefer a smaller phone, I hope 13 will be like 11.

Or maybe the feature identical 11 Max didn‘t sell so well vis-a-vis the regular Pro and Apple felt they needed to nudge people towards buying the most expensive model with a few extra features on the 12 Pro. We‘ll never know for sure.

Same with 7 and 7 Plus. I got the Plus because it had OIS and the Second Camera. No big deal

I hope they do indeed, makes the Max that much sweeter to get.

Right now I have watched a few iPhone 12 Pro reviews and could not careless for it, all I want to see are those friggin 12 Pro Max reviews!

Yep. Which many didn’t like. It’s good to see Apple getting away from this.

Pretty sure OP was sarcastic. But anyway, I'm disappointed they chose the route. Basically punishing those who want smaller size phone to not have the upgraded camera features. Personally I still chose the smaller version as I wanted to try smaller phone this time, I've been using the biggest versions of Android phones for years (and the smaller iphone, aside from the camera, didn't have other compromises to steer me away). I didn't use the 11 pro or pro max, but I was happy when they announced it last year with no differences aside from screen size and battery size, unlike most Android models where they really gimp out the smaller model.

I honestly don’t care

good for pro max users. Getting more for their money, a larger sensor

it’s probably a physical limitation,

cameras are getting so good it’s hard to be upset no matter what 12 variant you have

I wanted three cameras 6gb and a brighter display so I opted for 12 pro over 12

I was in no way sarcastic. I’m irked that apple is punishing small phone lovers too.

But how is this different to the MBP 13 vs 16, and the 16 having an i9 chip, or a dedicated graphics chip, it is just the way it is. Something bigger, is always going to be able to accommodate different technology.

I’ve seen people use that analogy.. come on it’s a totally different unpocketable product.

In no universe would any seriously consider an iPhone Max a pocket product!
I don’t get this. I put it in my jeans pockets every day. I don’t wear baggy jeans either. They’re like..slim normal jeans. It’s slightly bulky with a case but fine without one.

Size Matters. Available space within a phone affects what parts go inside of it. Simplest example would be the size of battery. Or why there is a camera bump now. I can see why the max has hardware differences that differentiate it. Can’t wait to see the improved pictures from the max.

My iPhone 6S+ is about the same size as the iPhone 12 Pro Max and I put my 6S+ in my front pocket with a lot of space to spare. I wear size 30 length mens pants.

BROOOO I put my xs max in my front pocket all the time and I have no issues with pocketability with it. My gripe is with one handed operability and overall size and weight in everyday life. Lol. Yeah I’m a max owner and yet I don’t like the differentiation apple has set this year. Heck why didn’t they equip the xs max or 11 pro max with any fancy stuff then?
