Thoughts on why the 8 gb model is actually the bigger waste of money.

OK here me out. I've been contemplating for months, as have many, which model to buy. At first, it seemed quite clear. 8 gig all the way. Not even a question. $100 dollars more? double the storage? Even Steve Jobs is giving his employees the 8 gig.

But here is how my mind has changed. I have a brand new, since the winter, 5th Gen 80 gig iPod. Those of you with one will know how wonderful it is.

With 80 gigs, I'm a DJ for a living and still have ALL of my music on it (we typically own more music than normal people ;) ). Also some video. I recently had it replaced for free under warranty by Apple and now its even newer and more on my mind.

What has gotten into my head is... I like the iPod for storage, buts WAY more than I ever listen to when I'm out and about. I don't mind having only a few hundred songs and maybe 1 movie with me anywhere I go, and I know if I ever NEED more, I have the biggie ipod...8 gigs certainly is not enough MORE than 4 gigs if I decided where I'm going/what I'm doing requires a lot of music.

What I'm saying is I can't think of a circumstance where 8 gig will really be superior to 4 gig. There also this factor: I believe the 8 gig is a waste of money....why? It's the most expensive 3.6 gigs of storage you'll ever buy.

Think about it: Full complete iPhone w/ 4 gigs - $530 tax incl. (NJ 6%)

Exact same product, only difference being an additional 4 gigs - $636 tax incl.

$100 is a lot of money for just 4 gigs. Bear in mind, this comes with no additional programming, no screen, no buttons, no UI. NOTHING. So you can hardly say its cheaper than an iPod nano with same storage because the iPod Nano has a lot more than its 4 gigs built into the price.

I know a lot of you want the 8 gig almost religiously, but I thought I'd share my feeling and possibly convince some people not to waste that extra hundred. Put it towards a really nice case or that awesome BT headset w/ dual dock. :D cheers yal :apple:

This changes nothing. i still want the 8GB, reguardless of price.
 
Well, I know a 4GB flash drive is only $55-60, and an 8GB flash drive is about $80-90.

That alone makes me question the value of the 8GB.

On the other hand, Apple knows how to price things... I'd only ever buy a Black MacBook, and it's at a ridiculous premium for just the color and marginal upgrades. I probably would want the extra 4 gigs...
 
i just made my 4 GB iphone playlist. i cannot think of a single time I would ever be pissed off about not listening to one of the 40 or 50 albums on there right now, and if I did ever need to change anything, wait until I get home.

4 GB all the way.

I was always getting the 4GB version from day 1. No need for any more space, since I have the 80GB iPod...

I'll probably keep newer albums on the iPhone and a movie or two for a long trip... however, I plan on always keeping the content fresh on the iPhone, since I'll have that with me wherever I go (unlike keeping Mr. iPod in the car while I'm in the store or something).

The AT&T guy, yesterday, tried his HARDEST to up-sell me on the 8GB. They must get a commission for sales. :rolleyes:

Enjoy the 1/3rd of a movie you can fit on there. While us 8 giggers will be watching movies you'll be staring at album art, lol!

Have you ever seen the black mac book though? To me it looks absolutely disgusting. Matte finish, shows a lot of dirt...gross.

I've walked 5 close friends through buying macbooks in the last year, all white. They all made that decision themselves. Based on looks alone.
 
I have an 80GB ipod, but I'm still getting an 8. I'd rather not have to worry much about space, since the OS is taking up like 700MB.
 
Sorry but I don't follow your logic.

No, storage is even MORE important when it is not enough. 4 gigs and 8 gigs is not enough for this device. That being said, 8 gigs is a lot closer to being enough than 4 gigs is. I could NEVER buy the 4 gig model, unless it was less than half as much and even then it would be hard to do.

By your logic they might as well just put 1 gig in there.

My first MP3 player had 16 megs of ram. I later made it to 96 megs of ram. Later I had one with 256 megs of ram. None of them were enough for all the music I had. Yet the 256 megs of ram device, was way more useful to me than the 16 meg one.

i didn't watch movies on my old iPod, i don't plan on doing it with the iPhone. if anything it would be a couple TV episodes, but thats it, and I could fit a few on there.
 
my reasoning is, this is an investment for 2 years. i may be able to manage with just 4 gigs now, but in the future will i still not need 8 gigs? i wud be really pissed at not buying the 8g model instead of 4g when it just cost 100$ more and not having to buy a completely new iPhone (maybe a revB) at full price.

Now this is a decent argument. First one so far in this thread. So good it makes me torn again. That glaring 2 year thing. Will be pissed in 6 months or a year with a 4 gig model. No I don't think so as my reasoning won't change...but its still two years and enough to scare anyone into just buying the 8 gig.

That is a much better argument than, "I'm buying an 8 gig cuz its bigger. more is better."

Sure, for a phone, 4GB is plenty.

But for a phone/ internet device/ ipod, 8GB is kinda small itself, and 4GB is tiny, so I'll take the biggest size and have more of my favorite songs on it.

Good luck with your iphone; I hope to be happy with mine. Variety is, like the man says, the spice of life.
 
If you don't have an iPod, get an 8 GB. If you do, then you have the option of not keeping your media on one portable device.

erm... NO it's not a "phone"
it's a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen ipod with touch controls and a breakthrough internet communications device. Personally, if there was a 16 GB version, I'd be buying it.

That is a bad point.

I have an 80 gig ipod. Having 8 gigs of storage on my iPhone will make it less necessary for me to always have my ipod close by.
 
5 Reasons to get the 8GB
1) More room for your music and video. Though you can get by with 4GB you will have no problem filling the 8GB and you know it.
2) More room for current application data. Your contacts info will definitely continue to grow in size as you add new contacts and add pictures to more and more contacts.
3) More room for future applications and upgrades. Apple will be releasing OS upgrades with new features and new applications. This eats into the available memory.
4) Room for document storage. I bet you will soon be able to store and view documents on the iPhone that are not email attachments (Word, Excel, PDF, ebooks) so you need to plan room for these.
5) Better resell value. When version 2.0 of the iPhone comes out, your 8GB will be much more desirable than the 4GB.

When it comes to memory/storage you never buy to fit what you are currently using, you buy for the future because history has shown we never use less we always need more. Get the 8GB and you will never regret it.

I'd have to agree with this. But then again, Rev 2.0 w/3g will probably be 16 GB. Perhaps the 8 GB will have a better resale value.
