The reason that the 8GB sucks is because 4GB of ADDITIONAL flash does NOT cost $100! It costs $40, max, and that's even factoring in retail markup!

Why is it $100 more!?!

i just made my 4 GB iphone playlist. i cannot think of a single time I would ever be pissed off about not listening to one of the 40 or 50 albums on there right now, and if I did ever need to change anything, wait until I get home.

4 GB all the way.
Don't forget about space for the OS for the phone. Space for the phone's data (phonebook at least).
And space for data for other applications.

Here is the point I was getting at that so many are over looking.

I have and use an EIGHTY GIG iPod. Yes, I want the iPhone to carry around instead of having to carry both things, thats the WHOLE point of this device, agreed?

My point is, how different is 4 and 8 gigs in terms of replacing my 80 freaking gig as my primary portable?

The difference is truly negligible compared to what its supposed to "replace."

and for $100....i jsut dont see it being worth it.

I went from a 60g ipod video to a 4g ipod nano and i don't miss the size difference at all. Love the small size, can travel and go where ever i want, workout with it etc. I don't think I would bring my iphone into the gym actually, i wouldn't want to drop it on the weight or something.

Granted my whole music library can't be with me, but do we listen to everything in it? I certainly don't. Some songs are there more for storage.

But if the iphone is 16g at least, i would get it. It just doesn't warrant itself to be that expensive at 8g. I like how it is a pda as well, contacts, email etc. I was so close to getting a blackberry pearl but with the iphone, i want a mac pda-ish device.

I would wait for Rev 2.0 with 3G, and bigger capacity and less mugging for those that haven't seen this:

The AT&T guy, yesterday, tried his HARDEST to up-sell me on the 8GB. They must get a commission for sales.

Absolutely... In the employee sales guide thingie (PDF)...

Sales Compensation for iPhone
Commissions for iPhone will be calculated as part of the Opportunity component.

<snip>

Commissions are earned when the customer completes the iTunes activation process and the device is activated in the biller, which may not be the same day as the device sale. For example, if customer purchases iPhone on June 30th however does not activate it until July 1st your commission will be reflected in the July commission statement not June’s commission statement.

<snip>

Customers must complete the iTunes activation process and the device must be activated in the biller within 45 days of device purchase in order for the commission to be earned.

My iPod is dying, and one of my personal reasons with myself to get it is that it will replae my iPod. Ya, I do have and fill a 60GB iPod, but I have found that I tend to go through phases with music, so I can load it with ceertain music and switch it whenever I want. BUT, I still need the 8GB because I want to have one or two movies on it. I am inthe middle of creating my music playlist, and right now it is at 3.5GB,which already leaves me at an 8giger. IMO, if you can afford to spend the extra 100, then it is worth it.

When apple updates the phone to be able to work with files the 4 gig owners will be at a major disadvantage.

The 8 gig is about future proofing.

Good point. I was going to buy a 4 gig and then I thought about all the software updates that we all know are coming. I won't be surprised if the OS plus future updates will take up 1gig.

If you can swing it...

there's just no arguing with the 8. If you are focused on music, then we'll I would imagine you might have some flexibility but still as much of library is in AAC and AIFF, I want as much space as possible. I run my library at home via an intel mac mini into a Lavry DA10 DAC so I want the highest quality.

I doubt it's hurting the sound on the iPhone either especially when I upgrade from these buds.

As it stands, I already have the unit mostly full, in all of 24 hours mind you. :p

I had to eliminate some playlists entirely, and remove several video files in order to fit everything the first time I synched.

I've got an 80g iPod, too, so I had the same dilemma.

I went ahead and got the 8G iPhone. I subscribe to a lot of podcasts that I listen to once or twice week on certain mellow days while working, so they build up and take up a lot of storage space. I think I'll just use the iPhone for the podcasts and the occasional movie or two that I would want to watch on the larger iPhone screen during downtime when I'm not home.

I have 800 MB left over after the stuff I WANTED(not need) was put on. Is this enough to last me at least a while for software updates?

i heard the next software update was going to be 20.. maybe 30 gigs. :)p)

yea. 800 MB will last you a long while.

I already planned on buying the 4GB model because you know a new iPod using multi-touch and OS X is right around the corner, probably using flash memory, too.

The $100 I save is going towards the next-gen iPod.

What I'm saying is I can't think of a circumstance where 8 gig will really be superior to 4 gig.

I can.

I put movies on my iPod. They're about 1.25 GB each. I have about 1.5 gigs of music. And I have my photo library, which is quite a few gigs.

I'd like to put 2-3 movies, 3-4 TV show episodes, 1 GB of music and a few hundred photos on it. The 8 GB can do that. The 4 GB can't.

I wish there was a 16 GB; so I could fit my complete photo library and a bunch of movies :)

Welll you convinced me!

I'm going to return my 8gig and get a 4gig and then use the $104 to Pay rent that I've owed for 6 months and just spent on iPhone.

thank you, thank you.

I really don't see how this is an arguement ... You double your space for 100 dollars... How is that a bad deal?
You either:
a) don't need the storage or
b) really need the money in which case you shouldn't be spending that much on a phone anyhow

Once people see how geat this thing is at handeling media theyll want to put a lot of content on it... Then theyll wish theyd have gotten the larger size

Apple makes a higher margin on the 8 gig model, yes. But the phone shouldn't be purchased based on corporate return per unit. You should pick the model that best suits your needs. (simple logic I know) :p
