The reviews are in this morning, and just after watching a couple, I've found three disappointing aspects from the Mac Studio and Studio Display. They are very small things but disturb me quite a bit because Apple could do better.

The first is the packaging of Mac Studio. We initially saw it in this post: Lucky Customer Receives Mac Studio Days Ahead of Schedule, quite some people are questioning if this were indeed from Apple. Although I can understand why they did it, but usually Apple's packaging doesn't open from the side.

You can also see a lot of uncovered sharp edges exposing the inside of the cardboard. They can potentially cut your fingers opening the packaging. One of the more dangerous places is the handle, it is surrounded by four sharp edges, and not to mention, the box is quite heavy. I would really hesitate to put my hand anywhere close to that handle.

The second is the power indicator on Mac Studio. Apple used to drill lots of tiny holes using laser directly on the aluminum and let the power indicator light shine through. You would not be seeing the power indicator when the machine is turned off. Mac Studio seems to have a plastic light exposed. This is such a small thing but was one of the finesse Apple products used to have.

The third is the undetachable power cable of the Studio Display. If apple wants this power cable to be undetachable, they should've come out with a much better design than the current black plastic on aluminum design. I recall going to the purchase page and finding it weird seeing it not come with a power cable in the box, now I know why.

With an integrated power cable, there are much better places to fit it and much better ways to integrate it with the aluminum body. The current design looking like a plug makes me wonder if this was originally a detachable cable and they decided to change it later in the design phase. The original HomePod came with a beautifully designed cable that looked integrated but is actually detachable, this black braided cable doesn't fit with the look of Studio Display.

Another nitpick with this power cable placement is that you will see the cut-out hole in the stand from the front of Studio Display. It was hidden from the user's view in the case of Pro Display XDR.

For what it's worth, my Mini M1 is the same way. I can see the hole when it's off. Never knew it to be any other way.

The monitor is an all around disappointment for me. The power cord being just one of several issues I have with it. The good news is that I have the ability to buy something else that works better for me.

The power cord is the most perplexing to me. My wife has the 24" iMac and unboxing/setup of that machine was like no other - it unfolded similar to the Mac Studio box, but much more impressively given the larger size. Then you have the colored aluminum options, the color matched keyboard and trackpad included in the box, a color matched magnetic braided power cable and it even included a color matched braided lightning cable for charging the keyboard/trackpad! After getting that I felt Apple had turned a new leaf with it's products. All that for $1299, which feels like an incredible deal.

Then they release the studio display...$400 for height adjustment, no included polishing cloth unless you pay for the $300 matte finish. Power cable is permanently attached. Camera is poor quality out of the box. I guess I should be thankful that they include a thunderbolt cable in the box...

Also interesting to me - they didn't send any reviewer that I could find the Studio Display with the height adjustable stand. Hopefully that doesn't have issues...

Are you just pissed because it is too expensive for you ?

And you did not mention the lack of wiper cloth for the non nano screen version :)
Just a list of very petty arguments nobody will, care about.

Dave Lee talked about the adjustable stand in his March 9th video. He's rather impressed with it, to the point where he suggested that Apple should have used a cheaper design to lower the price for a mid-level monitor.

You people crack me up :)

Interesting and good to know it has been that way on the mini. I know for sure this was something apple did in the past though :)

The thunderbolt cable was also quite short at 1.2 meters. Apple might be expecting people to pair it mostly with laptops and mac studio putting next to it.

Perhaps it saves some room enabling them to fit the power supply in the display itself, rather than using a power brick like the iMac 24”.

I personally don't have any problems with the first two issues you mentioned, but the power cable in the studio display being undetachable is very strange to me. I feel that it would be annoying if you had to move the monitor around to another room and you had a cable dangling while you carry it, but that's not really a big deal.

My bigger issue with it is that cables can break by accident. I've rarely ever had cables break on me, but if it does happen I imagine having to take the monitor in for repair just for the cable breaking would feel absurd. I was expecting Apple to have a similar power cable to that of the 24" iMac.

Yeah I've seen the Pro Display XDR stand, but we don't know for sure that the stand on the Studio Display is of the same quality, there are no videos of the Studio Display with height adjustable stand yet. I'd guess it hopefully will be, given it is holding a much lighter and smaller monitor, doesn't have the magnetic latch and doesn't support portrait rotation (But it is also $600 cheaper.) Anyways, I get mine tomorrow so I'll find out soon enough...I'm just hoping I shouldn't have went for the vesa mount...

On the sixcolors.com live stream earlier they confirmed that the power cable is detachable. (@ 14:10 into the video)
Unfortunately they did just assumed it to be a normal power plug, that can be removed, and they did not do it on cam.
it might (hope) it be like the large HomePod, that with a hard enough jank on the cable it still comes loose, but it is not supposed to.

Marques Brownlee confirms the monitor cable is detachable.
Wait, really? Where? Everyone else I've seen says it didn't feel detachable. Errr, i think you misread his tweet. He says that he is confirming that "the power cable is connected to the display and not be detached."

But wait, the drama continues... Here's a photo of Nilay Patel removing the power cord. Maybe they seated the plastic in the slot when it was still cooling so it expanded, making it difficult to tug out? Hell, I don't know.

OP IMHO the only valid concern here is the non-detachable power cord.

is that connector keyed to ensure correct orientation?
