I'd say theoretically the PCI cards will enable you to use slightly more plugins than Firewire 800 boxes will because of the bandwidth lost in firewire connections vs, say, thunderbolt (hence the TB adaptor on the Apollo which enables greater UAD plugin bandwidth with the same number of cores over the faster connection).

Okay cheers mate

Intel is designing one, but clearly lays out the specs which no MP and few existing PC mobos have. Hot-swappable PCIe being one of them. It makes sense when you think about it.

Not hot-swappable PCIe, but hot swapping-support for Thunderbolt in the BIOS.

There are some machines out there that may have Thunderbolt, but it only works when the device is connected prior to booting like PCIe -> Designing a PCIe card with Thunderbolt isn't the problem, designing one that allows you to attach a Thunderbolt hard drive to the computer while it's running however is.

Also one that carries DisplayPort data from the IGP.

thanks for the heads up

Thanks Slug, Mango and dec60 for the detailed update on TB. Looks like I haven't dig deep enough on TB just yet.
I hoped those cards would hit the market sooner or later to keep the classic MP alive a little longer. With that news, it is unlikely that it will happen.

So its one tiny reason more on the list that argues for the new iCan. Can't help myself, I somehow like the new design and size of this thing. I look forward hitting that apple store to see one in action once its released. Chances are, this thing will become a nice collectors item, even after its useful shelf life.

While I think that would open up the market quite a bit and I hope you're right, I doubt it. Intel has been ridiculous in their restrictions on thunderbolt, even restricting this design because it didn't look pretty.

The GPIO port and special bios are stated requirements Intel placed on the PCIe-->TB card. While it'd be cool if that weren't the case, I think they'll require them.
