Gorsuch made a good point in the arguments. Why don't they just make TikTok put a warning when opening the app about its ownership and potential risks. It's as if our government think that we are all dumb and can't make intelligent decisions ourselves. If that's the case, why even allow us to vote...

But Gorsuch voted in favor of upholding the law. It was 9-0 at the Supreme Court.

A number people in our government do think like that (that not all, but too many of us, are such).

A Guide to Understanding the Hoax of the Century

It's a long read, but backs up what I just said. The mindset that it's necessary to protect the American people from their own bad judgment...and is it any surprise?

Presidential elections don't tend to be landslides. Whoever wins, it seems to a sizable minority in American that those who voted him in are idiots, naive, morally depraved, doing possibly irreparable harm to our nation, etc...

Social media is potentially a very powerful influencer; that's why they blocked TikTok, because of how it could be used by someone else in theory. Do you imagine the U.S. government powers-that-be don't try to mess with it through companies based here?

Including this forum? Perhaps we should also toss out Youtube and Substack?
Nope. Forums have been around as long as the internet.

The world has gone downhill since this algorithmically driven mind genocide ***** started. Unfortunately the most embedded, and vulnerable are too young to have experienced this.

Omg. Tell me you're joking. Fistfights over Pokemon cards?
Adults fighting over Pokémon cards at Costco

Apparently they’re collector items and scalpers have been buying them all up and reselling them for 3 and 4x online.

The guy in this video that elbows the man in the green vest, actually stole two boxes out of the guys hands. Guy wearing the hat had multiple police complaints filed against him for that. The green vest guy was there to get a box for his kid, which he got one box… damaged.

I don't use TikTok, or X (or ever used twitter) or threads, or mastodon, or blue sky...so don't really care.

What I do care about is congress saying it's unsafe with a "trust me bro" instead of presenting, for everyone to see, exactly what the specific issues are, in detail.

That's all.
I agree. This make me feel as if our uncle can’t be trusted. I just feel it is about control.

But TikTok is not available in China, so a VPN server in China is not a viable alternative to accessing TikTok

I think they have their own version. I had both in TestFlight at the same time and one was named Chinese. But I never registered in any.

For the longest time, I had issues with a TikTok ban from a first amendment perspective. But I thought of an analogy that kinda made me change my mind.

Let’s say there was a bar in the United States, and a lot of people hang out at this bar with friends and socialize and have a good time. But then, you find out this bar is owned and operated by China. On top of that, you find out this bar is filled with Chinese spies who are eavesdropping on you and collecting your information.

The US government would have a right to shut this bar down. Right?
What if they had no evidence of this happening in the bar, and just said “trust us”

I think it would be justified now if European requests X.com must sell its European business to an European company.

What if they had no evidence of this happening in the bar, and just said “trust us”
There was evidence. It was presented to Congress and to the Supreme Court and both agreed (Congress overwhelmingly and the Court unanimously) with the evidence. There is very little that those groups agree on otherwise but you think they magically decided to ban TikTok just because they hate viral dances or something? By far the most logical and least conspiracy theory reason that ALL those people agreed is because the governments evidence was solid.

Theirs always going to be some information that remains secret from the general public. Maybe because revealing it causes a risk directly (say the exact details on how to make a nuclear bomb) or because it would put how it was gathered at risk (say it could if the agents involved) or other reasons defined in law.

You can believe that all information should always be public but that’s unrealistic and IMO naive.

I don't care what is going on in China. This is about what our Congress is doing here. Since when are we trying to be like China?
Don't you think it is interesting that a CCP-backdoor-owned social media platform is banned in its own country? Being like China, har-de-har-har you are clueless. You might take some time, ten minutes perhaps, and educate yourself about the social credit system China has, then get back to us about becoming like China.

Tiktok could remain available for android outside of the Play store, and/or as a web service. Instead they’re opting for shutdown in order to mobilize their user base. Although I guess many will VPN.
I don’t know where those people gonna VPN into. To China? Cause there are services that helps overseas Chinese VPN BACK to china to enjoy some of their “local” Chinese contents. It’s going to be wild if that happens.

Bitbance's whole argument was centered on the 1st Amendment and free speech. The Supreme Court correctly ruled the First Amendment does not apply to a foreign-owned company.
Western world really should use TikTok to set an example and sent a strong message to Chinese government: you banned all of our services, time for us to ban yours.

You obviously lack the ability to realize those companies are not owned and operated by a foreign adversary.

you obviously lack the ability to realize those companies are operated by a foreign adversary in every none-US country

vpn to where its available , uk, canada, egypt,

The way I understand it if you already have the app loaded it will continue to function but it will no longer be available in any app store.

I don't have any sympathy for Bitdance they had most of a year to sell themselves to someone to move its servers out of China. Here is something to consider military personal in the US and the EU are banned from loading TicTok on There own and issued devices. There are rumors that "He who must not be named" might purchase it.
