I don't think I've ever used a computer long enough for it to stop getting new OS versions. But I loaded this thing up when I bought it - ticked all the boxes for processor, RAM, SSD, etc. - and it's still super snappy for everything I throw at it. Maybe next time I'll get a base model so that it wears out more quickly 😂

I’m in the same boat, one year ahead of you. I have the totally slammed 2013 imac, i7, graphics, etc.
It still works perfectly and handles everything i need it to, but it was (officially) left behind by Big Sur. I’ve gotten by with the workarounds but it’s a pain to do updates.
I’d like to see them do a better job of providing longer-term security updates, to keep these things out of the landfill.

I have the OG Retina 5K model too and there's no M1 Pro/Max treatment from last week event. Luckily I found a 2017 model somewhere and call it good.

Yeah it occurs to me that it may wind up being a software update that eventually forces my hand. Thing is, so much of what I do is on Apple software (safari, pages, numbers, etc) that it's tough to imagine Apple not continuing to support those on my hardware for at least a few more years. And even then, it's hard to imagine a software feature I'd want and miss so badly that I'd pull the trigger on an entirely new hardware set up just to get it.

Yeah sidecar and universal control or whatever they call it are super cool and I'd like to have it. Not (yet) enough though to pull the trigger.

That seems to be the trend this year, leaving slightly older but still very capable hardware behind with a new OS release.

Microsoft is pulling the same thing with Windows 11; hell I have a decent Dell PC from 2016 and it's not eligible for the update. It's really odd because Microsoft has historically been a lot better than Apple about not leaving old hardware behind, but this time it seems to be an exception.

I figured leaving the late 2014 imac behind might be due to Nvidia, but apparently they have Radeon chipsets too. I wonder what Apple's reasoning was. I just barely snuck under the wire with my 2015 iMac, and will probably be left behind next year.

What I'd love to experience is what, say, a loaded 16" feels like in use compared to my iMac. Benchmarks (which put the MBP about 50% faster in single core, and 200-400% faster for various multi core stuff) aside...would I really notice it? Appreciate it? I guess I may have to give one a whirl at the shop if not in-home.

ETA: @zorinlynx I see your sig...I had a ][+, upgraded to 64MB so I could play Wizardry :) Graduated to a ][GS before college brought me into the world of Macs. Fun memories.

i maxed out my Late 2015 27" iMac.

4.0Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, M395X, 512GB SSD and its just scrapped in for support for macOS Monterey but id imagine this will be the last one for mine.

The fact i won't be able to get the latest will bug me 😅 but i guess that's a way of making people upgrade to the latest and greatest.

Pretty interesting. I'd seen some threads here at MR about getting Monterey working on "old" hardware too. I've thought about it but this is my somewhat mission critical DD so it has to work 100% of the time. Seems like these workarounds always bring issues, even if just annoying maintenance and updates. Maybe if/when I get new hardware I'll give it a go since the machine otherwise works great.

Same as it ever was. I went to great lengths to get my beige G3 tower to run OS X 10.4. It sucks to be “unsupported”!

My Late 2014 iMac was my first iMac. The patches and workarounds i have been reading here are not for me as I am not smart enough, nor patient enough.

How long can I expect the iMac to survive being stuck at macOS Big Sur 11.6.1?

Hardware:

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014)
4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
1tb Fusion
AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4 GB.

Can I repurpose the screen as a second display for my 2021 macBook Pro 14" base model?
Can the 1tb storage drive act like an external drive to the macBook?

Thanks for any response.

No, target display mode only works with older macs/MacOS versions.
And yes, you should be able to do target disk mode on the iMac with the necessary adapter.

Luna display works great over thunderbolt bridge. Using it with my M1 Mini and 2011 27" iMac. Not supported with Retina display however.

Want to make sure I understand what you're saying... Luna allows you to use your 27" iMac as an external display, but *not* at the full 5k resolution?

Correct. In my case, I don't have a retina display, so it's not an issue.
Ah right now I see that you said it was a pre-retina 27" so that makes sense.

Such a bummer as I love the 5k screen, and no equivalent external monitors are available.

Apple is not a social service company. They sell products and they update them to keep up with the times. They sell a product and they are responsible to their shareholders to make money. Like any product, when it gets old, you can’t get service for it anymore. It happened to my refrigerator. At 10 years the service guy said that if it broke down, nobody kept parts for it anymore. With a computer, it's not just physical parts, its software parts.

LOL easy cougar. I'm a capitalist. But if you're even remotely in touch with the threads here then you'd know Apple is leaving money on the table by not offering high quality monitors outside of the $6000 XDR. The LG ones Apple sells are meh to put it mildly.

Trying this, and I have a very dumb question -- don't know if you can help.
The otherwise very good OpenCore install guide goes into great lengths on how to gather kexts and other support files for the custom EFI.

Here's my dumb question: it's unclear to me whether all of those steps are required if you're booting "real" Apple hardware. The guide seems to be geared toward hackintosh builds but there is lip service from time to time regarding Apple hardware.

EDIT: I am dumb. Mixed up OpenCore's Legacy Patcher with the "regular" OpenCore.

To the listeners at home:
OpenCore Legacy Patcher is working great on my iMac15,1

It took me about 20 minutes to set up the initial Monterey installation USB then another 20 minutes to figure out how to boot my machine without the USB on subsequent restarts, but now it's working perfectly. In fact, I'd say it's more performant than Big Sur was.

The "big" limitation is that there is a hardware bug keeping full 5k resolution from being used. There is ever so slight aliasing when using RDM (Retina Display Manager) and setting the resolution directly to 3840x2160, but that may have been there before. 🤷‍♂️

Steps:
  1. Download and install the preferred macOS version to a USB stick
  2. Download the OpenCore-Patcher-TUI.app.zip
  3. Run the OpenCore Patcher app and Build & Install to the USB stick
  4. Reboot, holding down Option and choose the OpenCore EFI Boot option
  5. Install / upgrade the OS
    1. There were several intermediate reboots where I had to select the EFI Boot option, then the internal drive
  6. Following the Post-Installation steps, I disabled the "ShowPicker" mode and installed to my internal drive this time
Protip: Make sure you follow #6 -- I had a couple heart-stopping minutes when my mac would just show me the "prohibitory symbol." I got past it by plugging my bootable USB directly into a port instead of through a hub and was able to boot, then follow #6

This essentially works by getting the "Regular" EFI to start an aftermarket EFI bootloader which mokeypatches the boot process, making your Mac look like a supported version.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I've just had the 'upgrade to Monterey' notification begin appearing on my 2014 5K.

Has anyone else had this and jumped in? I'm a bit apprehensive given I can't find any documentation on this Mac actually being supported.

when mac os didn't provide updating, don't forget Microsoft Windows 10.

Windows 10 could work for a few years more inside old Mac.
