Displaymate's Raymond Soneira agrees with a Tim Cook. But I suppose critics will argue he has an agenda or is a pro-Apple fanboy.

http://www.siliconbeat.com/2013/02/13/display-expert-apples-cook-is-right-oled-screens-are-awful/

Not sure why people care what Cook says. And as others pointed out its not like Samsung hasn't done their fair share of cheap shots. I haven't seen any Apple commercials out there making fun of Samsung customers or knocking their mobile phone displays.

Have you seen the CEO of Samsung trash Apple? That is the difference.

Ads are ads... and Apple has certainly been guilty of that too ("I'm a mac")

You must have missed all the Samsung commercials attacking Apple and iPhone users. Guess Samsung has no confidence in their products? ;)

Besides, Tim Cook never even mentioned Samsung. He was just talking about OLED display technology, which isn't even a Samsung exclusive or invention.

My Note 2 display makes my eyes bleed when it shows red/orange colors.

It's cause everyone knows Samsung is the one using crappy displays, well them and Motorola, so they jump to conclusions.

Whenever I see people with Samsung phones in public the display looks awful from any side angle (always very green). Noticed it's not the same with the iPhone. Then again if you're using the phone you'll be looking straight at it so it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

I'm talking about Samsung not Microsoft. And when did Tim Cook trash Samsung? They're no the only company that uses OLED and they didn't invent it either. So to suggest that Cook knocking OLED = knocking Samsung is ridiculous. Boy they must have some serious astroturfing campaign going on. Often times it seems people around here are more defensive of Samsung than Apple.

Not yet. It's not below any manufacture though. Apples done it in the past and now Samsung is doing it to Apple. I'm sure there'll be a day when Apple does it again.

I've never been a huge fan of that kind of advertising from any company.

He doesn't say Samsung but we all know he means it. Does Samsung day anything about "Apple" in their commercials (don't know, don't think so) but we all know who they are talking about.

The CEO of Apple hasn't trashed Samsung (on this occasion), he trashed a display technology.
I think anyone with an IQ above room temperature knew he was targeting Samsung. But OK.

Regardless of what the members here proclaim with exasperation: it seems quite clear to me most people actually like, not only amoled, but the vibrant default setup that samsung has intentionally chosen.

Queue the "most people like McDonald's too" nonsense.... Until Apple starts using it, naturally.

Why? He said "some people" and at least three major manufacturers use AMOLED displays.

Assuming he was talking about Samsung says more about you than Cook ;)

I, for one hope Apple doesn't move to AMOLED period. Unless the color accuracy is addressed.

I believe this is another preference area. There are some who actually like the characteristics of AMOLED, despite its innaccuracy. I am not one of them.

The iPhone 5 display is the best I've seen - and I'm also a fan of the Nexus 4 screen - both LCD. I'd take both over any of the AMOLED screens out there - though I prefer the iPhone 5 screen due to its brightness (and the fact that you can jack the brightness up and still get relatively decent battery life).

Those commercials with the lines waiting for the iPhone were explicitly about the iPhone.

They also specifically target Blackberry in their newer "Unicorn Apocalypse" ads.

To say Samsung is vague in their ad targeting would be wildly inaccurate.

You do know who ships, by far, the most smartphones on the planet with amoled displays, right? Thought so.

But keep thinking he was referring to a vague "display technology" ;).

I would argue it is more than "some."

The color accuracy is naive. Samsung intentionally chose a vibrant color profile because.... wait for it... they felt more people than not like that. I am one of them. But if I didn't it is trivial to make my display look as pale and drab as an iPhone. :p

Nokia and Motorola use AMOLED displays.

The point is he criticised the display type, not any company in particular.

Michael

I'm not trying anything, just stating a FACT.

"Some people use OLED displays, the color saturation is awful."

Here we see him criticising a display type. He does not mention any company name, he just says "some people use OLED displays." He's not wrong; some people DO use OLED displays.

You're the one "trying" to make this into something it isn't, not me.

And AMOLED is not just used by Samsung. The same horrible display tech is used by Motorola and Nokia.

The CEO of Apple hasn't trashed Samsung (on this occasion), he trashed a display technology.

Riiiiiiight. Do you truly believe Timmy was not taking a shot a Samsung. They only make 90% of the world's amoled screens. They are the biggest player in OLED tech. Nobody can touch them on it. It really is that simple. They've put in the man hours of real innovation to get there. OLED is no doubt the future of displays. Only a fool will deny this. I'm sure little Timmy has plans to release an iPhone with OLED tech within the next 3 years. And guess what? The blind faithful be right there front and center to say how amazing it is. Just like they did with the 4 inch screen that was considered too big when the iPhone had a pathetic 3.5 inch display. What a joke.

My girl said she will leave me if I join this arguement about screen colors.

Relax guys. I've enjoyed both iPhone & Samsung Galaxy screens.

OLED displays are not created equal - I think its generally accepted that the non-pentile display on the Note II is better than the pentile display in other Sammys.

I'd concede that the iPad 3 display is better, but I certainly don't see how anybody could describe the display on the Note II as 'awful' (and I certainly didn't buy it for photo editing!) Its also worth noting that there are about 5 display settings including 'Natural' and 'Movie' which tone down the separation. The default 'standard' is highly saturated - probably because that gives it the most 'pop' when displayed.

I, for one hope Apple doesn't move to AMOLED period. Unless the color accuracy is addressed.

This whole OLED thing is a straw man, really. What people were arguing about before Tim Cook's speech was display size - not OLED vs. LCD.

If Apple made a 4.5" or 5" iPhone, there's no reason why it would have to use OLED (nor would it have to be "instead of" the 4" 16:9 iPhone 5).

Oh really? Samsung didn't mention Apple in their ads about some mysterious company who has customers lined outside their stores. Remember those ads? Yeah, I'm sure you ASSUMED they were referring to Apple and it's customers. Care to comment?

Did I? Show me where.

Assumptions and straw man arguments... I'm debating with a real winner here.

I really dont see anything wrong with OLEDS. i just wish the brightness was higher.

Then there is the issue of display longevity because the organic element starts breaking down as soon as you power the device on the first time.

Then there is screen burn in

Then there is grainy pentile artifacts

Up until this moment, AMOLED is god awful compared to LCD. It's not ready for prime time. The GS3 display flat out sucks.

Actually we have all discussed those ads on this forum. And we all know full well along with the rest of the population that can put 2 and 2 together, who Samsung was mocking. So why don't you show me in those threads where you came out and professed how we all got it wrong, and that Samsung never mentioned Apple in those ads. You know, the same way you're telling me and everyone else Timmy never mentioned Samsung.
Btw, your resorting to insults shows your inability to stand on your points. Case closed.

I've never argued about either - I simply prefer the smaller screen size and LCD screens as they currently are.

I don't know, or care, what the debate was - I was simply replying to Tin's comment about us apple fanboys hating AMOLED until Apple does it (I know you didn't say that Tin - just like to have a little fun with ya ;)) - simply that unless the color accuracy is addressed, even if Apple adopts it, I'll still wish/prefer the IPS LCD's.

Like I said - I prefer my Nexus 4 screen to the GS3 which I've compared side by side (my sister and bro-in-law both own GS3s). aside from the brightness - especially not realistically being able to turn it all the way up without killing the battery in 30 minutes - I think the N4 display is pretty stinking good, though the iP5's brightness, battery life, and overall color accuracy puts it at or near the top for me and I don't see why Apple would want to change that.

Especially since they've focused on gaining battery life efficiency elsewhere and will likely use IGZO as the next big advance as far as displays are concerned.
