With the new architecture, it seems the perfect time for a new MacBook 12. This time, it won't be underpowered, and will still have hours more battery life than comparable Windows laptops. It'll make a great complement to my 16" MacBook Pro M2. :D

So excited for the next year in Mac computing!!!

Indeed. My Bride is still sporting her '17 12 inch MacBook as her DD. She does not care for the larger Air. I hope Apl will reintroduce it or something similar. Instant buy for her if/when it comes.

I'd buy another 12 inch MacBook provided it did not have the butterfly keyboard. I didnt mind using it (second gen version) but it simply had too many issues. I'd also like to see port durability improved.

I could see an 11" or 12" MacBook just being another size option for the MacBook Air. I don't think that they'd actually reintroduce the MacBook line (again). Especially since the Air is what the MacBook was meant to be: fanless, portable, with USB-C, etc.

Hope so, but even better would be a return of the 11 inch MacBook Air. The wider aspect ratio would give it just a bit more portability (for tray tables etc.) , and it would more distinct from the 13".

As I've posted a few too many times, I miss my now dead 2015 12". In fact, I can't bring myself to throw it in the Apple sponsored recycle. I just heft it in my hand once in awhile and sigh:oops:. It certainly does seem the new M1 would address the criticisms of the original 12" MacBook. Apple, give the new one two ports, I'll even except a crappy camera:p

The extra depth required for scissor switch
keyboards make it a tight fit and means thinning the batteries, hence it was dumped when the Magic Keyboard came.

It won't happen. If Apple thought that there was a market for a 12" laptop, they'd still be making one. People seem to be preferring larger screens with smaller bezels these days. Since people aren't travelling so much this year, there's probably even less demand for small laptops than usual.

I gave up, the old faithful 2015 MacBook needed an (expensive) battery replacement and with a 20% discount on the new basic MBP 13" M1 I couldn't resist, but the M1 is really nice!

How did you get 20% off the M1 MBP ?

Just last night, my 2015 12" is in need of a new keyboard after 5 years of use.

I'm living in Denmark, we have two major electronic chains presently competing on the price for the new MBP, so the M1 MBP and M1 MBA are only USD 45 apart. Quite unusual for such a new Apple product.

I see a lot of people still using that original Macbook, so I know it has a market. I just wonder if there's a need for it anymore--as someone else above said, as bezels keep shrinking and shrinking, the larger screen sizes get easier and easier to carry around.

My sister is still on her old 11" MBA and loves it to death.

I think the new MacBook Air is the new MacBook. While the 12" MacBook did push the limits, many users didn't like that it only had one port and severely limited its use and reach. Of course, not to mention the butterfly keyboard that made it even worse. However, I am really enjoying the MacBook Air and kinda feels this (M1 chip + optimizations + Big Sur) is what Apple envisioned with the 12" MacBook!

I think you are correct - don't know if Apple will ever come out with a 12" or 11" Macbook again...

My 2015 rMB with the butterfly keyboard is starting to fail key presses.

So a new 11 based on the current 13, with the butterfly keyboard and replaceable battery? I'd be interested

They could even use the exact same board to take advantage of economies of scale. 6 GPU core binned down chips, $749. They'd position it as an iPad alternative, for those who want a more open OS.

I have the new MacBook Air M1. My trusty 12 inch MacBook is the perfect bedside computer. SO, yes, I would also buy a 12 inch MacBook with M1. It is super light and has its place in the lineup.

Why can't the MacBook Air simply retire the (expletives omitted) Air part of the name? I despised that name (and MacBook, to be fair...GIVE ME AN iBOOK!) since Day One.

I think the Air moniker only makes sense if you have something below that. iPad/iPad Air/iPad Pro makes sense to me. iPhone/iPhone Pro makes sense to me. I would be totally ok with MacBook Air just becoming MacBook to make it MacBook/MacBook Pro. Apple won't do it though--if the MacBook Air really has been their most popular and top selling notebook all these years, they're going to leave that branding just the way it is.

I don't want anything else with "i" in front of it though--I was tired of that naming convention years ago. I cringe every time someone says iWatch.

I've been a massive fan of the 12" Macbook, but I just don't see where it fits in to the lineup with the Air and the iPad Pros. Would love to be proven wrong, but I just don't see it.

At this stage, most laptops with screens under 13" fall into one of two categories: cheap boxes running Windows 10 S mode or Chromebooks. I don't think Apple wants to compete in that range because they would have to compete on specs rather than price. The new Air ticks all of the boxes Apple tried to tick with the 12" MacBook, a fanless laptop with a Retina display and comparable performance to the rest of the market. The bonus is that the 13" Air has two ports, compared to the lone port the 12" Macbook carried.

Totally agree on an 11-inch MBA.
Better choice for me instead of iPad.

Any hopes?
I just bought an M1 MBA and love it. Beyond impressed with the power and the battery life seems completely unrealistic until you experience it. That said, my favorite form factor of all time is my MBA 11, which I’ve had since late 2014. I still use it on occassion and it runs pretty well, but the size is what makes it such a great portable.

Nice. I still have my 11” MBA from 2011. I’ve upgraded to a MBP 13” 2020 Intel model but I still occasionally use the MBA. The size is perfect for me.
