I did see that. Is allowing a second operating system onto iPad really a merging? Also, an M1 iPad with 1TB and 16GB is carrying a lot of excess oomph. What are Apple going to be doing with?
Oh I agree. See my posts in that thread and elsewhere about using the M1s hypervisor hardware to support macOS on a VM. I just don't think Apple is interested. For the first time, I didn't upgrade my iPad Pro to the latest generation because I can't see any point unless Apple decides to lighten up on the iPadOS restrictions.

So Calif
Someone reported a rumor that they might be which is much different from "Apple is...". Of course a 12" MB with tiny bezels would be even nicer and much smaller than the current 13" Air. When it comes to ultraportables, a lot smaller is much better than a little smaller.

Compared with my 2015 & 2017 12" rMB against the current M1 sized screens - I would say that the 12" is still superior in screen real estate due to thin bezels. The 12" is thinner than the current 13.3" screen.

Nope. 11 and 12 is just too small to be a usable computer. The MacBook Air 13" is plenty small enough for anyones portability needs, and is actually big enough to be a computer.

No No No. My old 11 Pro is a better size and weight. I notice it every time I am throwing around with my new Air. The old was handy and better looking. If I could have the 11" design with modern internals and screen, I would choose that anyday over my MBA. But the 12" would also be nice, maybe even nicer, just with a proper keyboard instead of butterfly, and the two usb-c ports (though I would prefer more and on each side).

I would not be surprised that, when they redesign the Air, they might reduce the bezels and internal space previously used by the fans. Doing this might slim it down to meet the 12" MB's use cases. The current Air design was constrained by the older screens and by the Intel thermal needs. Apple has a lot more flexibility now.

From the cost of the original rMB 12", my i5 was $1500 so I would suppose IF Apple came out with a 12" model, price point would be higher than the base M1 Air...
That higher price point was just because the new retina screen was too expensive to sell as cheap as the Air. in a more rational product line, the hypothetical 12" MB would likely be the lowest priced laptop Apple sells.

I still think that what Apple will do is shrink the size of the 13" Air case and expect that to fill there 12" shoes. they may also keep the older Air case around for a couple of year, maybe branding it as the MB SE and selling it under $1000 to have a lower entry point.

Thats weird because my friend happily uses his 12" MacBook as a computer. I'll tell him that he should stop.
I think the problem is we all have differently capable eyes! Even my M1 MBA is way too small for my eyes unless I have the scale up so far I don't have much screen real estate. So screen size needs are really an eye of the beholder thing.

That said, at work I use a 14" laptop screen, so I'm close. :)

We have repeatedly heard Apple say “We're not gonna do that” and then they do it.

For an iPad to function as a notebook (like, on a plane), the keyboard (with trackpad) would have to be able to balance all the weight that is an iPad. Which is entirely doable, using the right geometries, without adding too much extra weight. Really, for a more compact notebook, the iPad enhanced seems like the ideal strategy. And you could never fry the works with an errant beverage.

Tell that to my Bride who has used a MacBook as her daily driver since it was introduced in 2015 and is currently sporting a 2017. She has done all her school lesson plans (teacher) and adulting (bill paying, shopping, reading books) on it. She gave my M1 Air a go and in short order handed it back to me with a "nope, too big". Her previous driver to the MB was a 2010? MacBook Pro 13".

I bought a MacBook from BH Video in 2018 (gold) when they were on sale. I really liked it a lot and later made the mistake of selling it to a forum member (as I had other new Apple toys). A few days ago I came across a Apple wholesaler who had a brand new 2017 (space gray) model and snatched it up at a really good price. It will be here Thursday. I won't make the mistake of selling it off again. lol If I can get AC+ on it, I will be thrilled.

Similar story for the Brides MacBook. When I saw Apple was discontinuing the MB, Microcenter put them on sale so I picked up a top/stock spec model for her retirement present from teaching. Hopefully Apple will introduce something she likes before it EOL. Hope your new one treats you well!

Currently it's possible to make an iPad app run as a Mac app with some minor modifications, the Podcasts app is an example of this. I can see a situation where you can run apps like this, in their 'Mac Mode' when a pointing device is plugged in, on an iPad. Menu bar, everything slightly smaller, floating windows etc. Older AppKit apps however, are unlikely. Of course the main thing holding back the iPad is the the App Store.

On an M1 Mac you can run iPad apps directly if the developer decided to flip a switch on their upload to the App Store. But going the other way isn't something Apple currently supports. You can use SwiftUI and write your code to support both iPadOS and macOS but running macOS only apps on the iPad isn't something that is currently possible and Apple seems to be saying clearly that they have no intention of doing it.

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear in my rambling, what I'm saying is that I could see a scenario where Apple would make it possible to run an iPad app that has been optimised for the Mac (like Podcasts, Messages, etc.), in its 'Mac optimised' mode, on the iPad, when a pointing device is plugged in.

Disagree. The 11” MBA was my main computer for over 9 years since 2011. Upgraded to a 13” MBP in September last year. I still have the MBA but it’s a bit slow these days. I’d happily buy a new machine this size if it had the current chips. Only reason I didn’t buy the 12” MacBook is because of that awful butterfly keyboard.
