+1 For Synology! Can't complain, have zero experience with TimeMachine but Synology does all of TimeMachine + many more. Highly recommended.

Aww man, I'm so divided.

Can Time Capsule be used well for NAS, Media Server (xbmc) and Remote Access?

Yes it can do NAS storage and remote access. The only feature the TC lacks is it is not a DLNA or iTunes server, so if you want to serve video/audio etc direct to an AppleTV you will needs iTunes running on a computer to serve that up... although the music and video files could still be store on the TC.

-1 for D-Link

My D-Link 320 has been absolutely horrid. The backup corrupts on an average of every 6 weeks. I would discourage anyone from getting one.

I may end up using my desktop for network file storage.

I'd look at the Synology. I've been on one for 18 months now and love it.
