This is a detailed post to cover all the bases so forgive the length. I created an account as I haven’t found this topic discussed much online over the years, specifically as many users don’t know or forgot about Time Machine’s early features.
As a Mac user for over two decades, one of Time Machine’s strongest benefits was recovering lost data by revisiting earlier moments within a core app. Launching Mail and then Time Machine let people restore individual missing or deleted emails—just as with Contacts—though this capability vanished a few years ago, likely because of the shift to APFS or iCloud. Presently, users must replace their Mail folder with an older backup which results in possible iCloud syncing errors and data loss.
Working directly with Apple, we determined whether the issue stemmed from iCloud or On My Mac local Mail, the shift to APFS and related Time Machine backup file system changes, or features Apple planned to move to iCloud but never did—due to syncing inconsistencies and possible third-party router problems after Apple discontinued its Airport line, a puzzling choice given Apple’s focus on streaming and cloud computing, since stable integrated WiFi systems remain essential for Apple’s devices and services. It appears Apple chose to remove these features despite recognizing them as a known bug.
All that stated, I haven’t installed Golden Gate for various reasons and skipped Tahoe which was the first time I skipped an entire OS release. My main systems are a Mac Studio Ultra M1 (the M3 wasn’t worth the upgrade and waiting for the M5 Ultra or M6) with a DAS Thunderbolt RAID for Time Machine, media storage, etc. I’ve searched Macrumours and haven’t seen this discussed. Have these functions been restored? Are others having different experiences?
Thanks in advance and I hope this brings the issue to others who can report it to Apple.
