Time Machine - Your Review/Thoughts

Time machine went south on me when I updated to Yosemite. It wouldn't let me browse my older files, it wouldn't create accessible new backups.
Fortunately, I use SuperDuper! in addition to TM.
For the moment, I'm using that backup method only.
Now that we're up to 10.10.2, I may give Time Machine another shot one of these days.
It'll be a Looong time before I'll trust it again. That sort of stuff is not supposed to happen with backup services.

Time Machine has worked well thus far in Yosemite using a NAS.

I believe in having a backup of your backup. And like others here, I employ Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner. I think Mike's comments about CCC are spot on. I also use the cloud for backing up important files.

Before I installed 10.10.2 I had over a years worth of Mavericks Time Machine backups. After I installed Yosemite, Time Machine has been creating new accessible backups on the same backup hard drive that has the Mavericks backups. All accessible. There might be something going wrong with your backup hard drive not caused by Yosemite. I would suggest running something like DiskWarrior on the backup hard drive.

So what`s the worst software nightmare? Primary system failure in the field, and a backup that will not restore. Only one solution test full drive backup, SuperDuper is now restoring my primary system off a USB 3.0 external drive...

Have done this previously with no issue, however this is the first time with OS X 10.10 so let`s see. Right now if the restore fails it will simply be inconvenient and time consuming, in the field a very expensive error...

Exactly; as many have found out to their rue in their "hour of need". Let`s see, so far so good. It`s time consuming, equally it proves the system, if it doesn't work it`s time for a change...

I use TM and have done several full system restores under ML and MAV. I haven't tried this in Yosemite yet. I guess I better test it out and consider another BU solution if it fails.

Tread carefully some have found TM to be an issue on 10.10, with backups going back to 10.9

Oh, I didn't mean to say that I was going to attempt a 10.9 restore using 10.10 TM. I just meant I need to test mt 10.10 BU to see if it CAN do a full restore of it' self. Not really gotcha moment for me anyway, as I too have images of all my OS's and associated data. I also have TM BU's all on different external drives for archival purposes,

i use time machine for os backup, but i also use the app timemachineeditor to make the backups once a day instead of every hour

i also use carbon copy cloner but for media backup only

I believe time machine software is written by the same bozos that writes wi-fi software on other apple not working os crap.
I don't touch my mac in like a week and i have like 2GB of backup files writing right now to time machine? wtf.
God forbid if i update some app like pages. Pages is like 500 MB, and i have maybe 50MB worth of files. Where do they came up with stupid numbers like 5 GB of backup.
I guess that Dr.Dre and Angela takes all the money and poor apple can't hire decent SW engineers. Apple's priority is to support gay people (cooks personal goal with companys money) and turning apple into black community lovers. Buggy software? Eh, who cares, people will buy it anyway.

p.s. not to mention that time machine settings are totally joke. You backup every hour or you don't. No other option. Well there is......manually start back up, like a peasant. So much about "most advanced software OS". What a joke.

is it o.k. to try restoring from time machine for the sake of checking its working

my only attempt was with previous macbook...did not go well at all from airport extreme/external hdd

my airport extreme external hdd has been quite happily taking backups from latest macbook

i've often been tempted to try restoring again...though don't wan't want to end up doing a full os reinstall etc

Success took about 3 hours to restore the entire drive, equally worth confirming the backup works as in the field I am on my own so to speak.

For a full back up solution your better to use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, you can do a full restore with Time Machine, however it`s more of a file archive utility than a complete backup solution.

The only thing that bothered me was that for some reason the restored drive comes up as a CoreStore volume and I had to revert it after words. I'm thinking that it doing this (hopefully) because the first full TM backup may have been CoreStorage. I think I'll delete the entire TM backup and make a fresh one just to test this out. It would really suck if it restores to CoreStorage only no matter what.

Interesting. To test I guess you would have to turn TM off, revert the volume and then turn TM back on for that volume and see if a restore still comes back as CS...
