iPod Time to leave the iPod?

After owning a few iPods, I need to ask the question. Do you think it's time to leave the iPod? Apple is really pushing the iPod touch which I have no interest in. I've always liked the Nano line, but I can no longer justify paying $150. When I first started buying iPods, not many other companies offered large memory, but now you can buy players by creative, sony, and sandisk for 1/3 of the price for the same amount of memory.
Your thoughts?
 
My thoughts are go with whatever works best for you, if you don't like touch screens and the iPod classic is overkill for you they yeah it probably is time to look into something different.
 
I would perhaps consider getting a smartphone that would maybe have some of the features an iPod would have. Although if you want to keep the iTunes functionality the only option's the iPhone, which is expensive. But if you have an older phone as well you may perhaps want to replace the two devices with one.
 
Not many companies care about quality of build like apple does, a friend of mine went through 3-4 scandisk players before he got a 5G nano, the nano is still going today, the only other player with about the same quality build as the ipod is the Zune.

also the software for all of these players is different from player to player, it going to be difficult to organize your media in any specific order with ease.
 
I have just the opposite problem, I have the 4th gen iPod which I personally think is an amazing device! I can surf the web, Facetime chat with other iPhones and iPods or iPads. I can send and receive email take photos, rec HD video and listen to amazing sound quality music. I can chat live with my Facebook friends etc. thousands of apps etc.

Its a iPhone 4 without the phone calling transmitter. But look around and how many people even use there phones to make calls? I live in a major metropolitan city and every single person I see on a daily basis is checking Facebook, Texting and tweeting on their iPhone all of which I can do on my iPod Touch for $0.00 per month. :D

I love it! everything the iPhone 4 does except make calls and all for free! :D amazing product.
 
I was with the iPod since gen 1. Having never known anything else, I thought it was the best, but this past november I realized there's other MP3 players, I happily made the switch to (fwiw) a better player.

It's a WP7 with Zune, shhhh :p

Umm, not really. You're tethered to Wi-Fi, and you don't have a GPS either. The iPod Touch's display isn't IPS either, so it's not as crisp as the iPhone 4. So while it's close, the 3G is the best part of having an iPhone for me. I can't imagine how I lived before 3G, it's changed my life so much.
 
I've been waiting for Apple to get a much larger capacity iPod to hold my huge iTunes collection, but the next thing is to get a laptop with unlimited iTunes storage using an external hard drive.
 
I would never even consider a player from another company, even the zune. My 3rd gen nano is still going strong (knock on wood.)

But really there are plenty of options for you, you just have to find out exactly what it is that you want.

Close is good enough for my personal use, when I'm out and about with friends and family I try to completely disconnect from all electronics and enjoy the true definition of human social interaction. :) GPS LOL whats that :) and why do I need it :) What is IPS??

Well that's what makes it cheap. Otherwise you'd been looking at spending close to what the iPhone retails for.
 
Even though I have an iPhone 4, I still use my iPod Nano 4G in my truck because it is easier to control without taking my eyes off the road. Until I get the iPod control module for my truck (so that it also works with the steering wheel radio controls) so that I can safely use my iPhone as my iPod on the road, I will probably keep the Nano. Honestly, I really haven't found many MP3 players that truly excite me since switching to iPods a few years ago. My fiance uses the Shuffle that I received as a groomsman's gift a few years ago (first generation that had the built in clip).
 
I must admit that ever since I bought the iPhone 4 32GB last year, I haven't used my iPod. So sold my Nano 5 last year.

Now that I just restarted fitness and gym training 3 times a week, I got to admit the iPhone 4 is NOT the device to use there. It's too bulky, when I use the cross trainer - even having it in an arm band seems too bulky - and I sweat during my workout, which makes it kind if gross using the iPhone afterwards, so decided it was time to buy the new Nano 6.th generation with touch and built in clip.

Just got it - the 16 GB Nano Touch in golden orange with a set of White Sony earbuds. It looks so cool, clips to my shorts and weighs nothing.
24 hours batterytime means I can use it for 2-3 weeks before recharging it. Best buy for my needs !!

So if you want a small lightweight unit with great Design for your workout - there still is a great need for the IPod Nano Touch with the clips IMHO :)

Just saw a lady in the gym drop her iPod Touch - the screen got a crack.
I thought she really needed a Nano Touch. Even if you drop the Nano Touch, it's so lightweight that it will still hang on to the end of the earbud cable and not drop on the floor.

Best unit for workout Apple has ever made - the iPod Nano Touch !!!!

You talk about them lke they're disposable. I’ve had my classic since Sept 07 and it's still in perfect working order. If for some reason you are going through them quickly, then it might be more economical for you to go with a cheapo brand mp3 player. The way I see it, with Apple you're investing in quality and peace of mind because they have good customer service. Not to mention the iPod is pretty much the standard in mp3 players.
 
Not me. Ipods are relatively cheap and work great with Itunes. The smaller models definitely still have their place.
 
I get the feeling that the iPod is already on its way out. Yeah there will always be a place for a shuffle or mini nano for jogging but seems like Apple mostly sees it as a thing of the past. I bet the next iphone will be announced along with the new ipods, taking some of the attention away from the stand along pods. I guess Apple is trying to move everyone over to iOS devices (regardless of whether its an iPhone or iPod Touch, or whatever comes next).

my iPod nano 2g is still going strong. I might get a classic if they update it. iPods with the click wheel still have there place I can change songs without taking it out of my pocket which works great when i ski.

The future will be iOS media player and I'm thinking a shuffle with no buttons and only shake to shuffle like they made 1 year ago.

Look guys forget it.
There will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be a need for small and portable iPods, for those of us who workout and go to the gym several times a week.

I have 2 iPhones but those and the iPod Touch are simply too big and bulky for the gym so a device like the iPod Nano comes into the picture !

Guys who don't go to the gym will not understand this. There I said it ;)

Apple will never stop making the smaller iPod - they make too much profit on these little small suckers and it's part of Apples image.

I agree; as will the larger models, for there are those (such as myself) who like the idea of being able to have an entire iTunes library in one place. For music lovers, nothing beats them.
 
nano and shuffle yes but the iPod touch is still going strong.

It near iphone capability of a third of the price makes it very attractive and useful.
 
If I didn't have an iPhone, I would definitely get the iPod touch.

However, since I have an iPhone, I am looking at a iPod nano or iPod shuffle to replace my 2nd Gen Shuffle which died.

On the train the other day, I saw an iPod nano being used. Looked pretty cool. Seemed very simple and easy to use.

When I ski / snowboard, I like the simple buttons that the shuffle had so I am leaning towards getting one of those this year. I think ... or a iPod nano.

Decisions. :)
 
I use a 160GB classic in my SUV which is awesome and I also have a shuffle I use for when riding the bike or at the driving range. If Apple discontinued the iPod I'd be in a pickle as I'm not about to get a Touch when I have a iPhone.

And I think the arm band looks silly and definitely wouldn't be fun when swinging a golf club :)
 
I still love the 2nd gen nanos, the thin aluminum rectangle ones, I use those in my (old) car with an FM transmitter, and I totally love the very first white plastic shuffles. Those thumb-drive lookalike white shuffles, they have FABULOUS audio. Very high quality. The best!

I like the last bunch of clickwheels as handy pocketdrives with the data option turned on and plenty space set aside for data. Not for hard use, just the occasional desperate maneuver. Used to be able to stick a minimal OS on a firewire model of iPod and boot from it.

Classics are still wonderful for keeping stuff from separate (and pretty big!) libraries of operas or assorted genres of "classical" music.

Would not part with the later shuffles, or the latest nano which I use like a shuffle. They can take a fall-down joke and not break...

So... NO... not ready to leave iPods behind. Apple has not really left any of the old models behind either, since you can still load stuff onto them as long as you have a cable to charge and sync with (and the correct power adapter helps, or at least some older speakerdock with appropriate connector). When Apple finally takes all the stuff to wireless sync, that's probably it for ipod dinosaurs. Not quite yet!
