I can definitely see apple will consider just getting rid of ipod shuffle and replace it with iPod nano.

iPod classic will continue until iPod touch can reach the high Capacity at a reasonable cost for both apple and customers. People still like to brag about they have 50000-100000 songs on their iPods.

We still don't have 250GB iPod touch yet... do we?

Seriously, out of all three iPod family.. I only expect iPod nano to live. iPod touch is in more like iPhone category.

My biggest complain about iPod nano is the price. The price is ridiculously high. 149 dollars for 8GB MP3 player that doesn't support video?

Ridiculous.

Apple needs to lower the price to 99 dollars for 8GB and 129-149 dollars for 16GB one by next update.

Also, I expect icloud support to be built into futhre iPods. The current iPods do not support iCloud except touch.

Seriously ipod Touch has surpassed nano as the BEST SELLING ipod.

You logic is severely flawed if you think nano is the one that escapes Apple's eradication of devices.

As long as the iPod classic stays alive I will be happy. For me nothing can replace the click wheel

Definitely.

Out of all the iPods that have been released, the iPod Classic has got to be one of my all-time favourites.

As you've said, nothing can replace the click wheel, which in my opinion, is the greatest navigational interface ever designed in the technological industry.

In terms of iPods, I would prefer it over any other navigational interface, including touch-screens.

Look guys forget it.
There will ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS be a need for small and portable iPods, for those of us who workout and go to the gym several times a week.

I have 2 iPhones but those and the iPod Touch are simply too big and bulky for the gym so a device like the iPod Nano comes into the picture !

Guys who don't go to the gym will not understand this. There I said it ;)

Apple will never stop making the smaller iPod - they make too much profit on these little small suckers and it's part of Apples image.

Only people who are too young to have ever worked out or gone running with a Sony Walkman tape player think that an iPhone is too bulky!

After owning a few iPods, I need to ask the question. Do you think it's time to leave the iPod? Apple is really pushing the iPod touch which I have no interest in. I've always liked the Nano line, but I can no longer justify paying $150. When I first started buying iPods, not many other companies offered large memory, but now you can buy players by creative, sony, and sandisk for 1/3 of the price for the same amount of memory.
Your thoughts?

different tools for different tasks.

(1)
i have a shuffle i use in the gym. i download the latest podcasts every morning before i go. the ipod is too big (i had the first generation walkman, so i know what that is like). it doesn't clip onto my clothes like the shuffle, i am always worried about hitting it with a barbell when it is in my pocket and destroying that beautiful screen, and it is overkill. i have used it and the ipad when i do treadmill-type equipment, but because i mainly lift weights + swimming, the ipod is less than ideal.

(2)
i use the ipod all day walking around town. it has all of my music on it (20GB+ of songs) and i can go to pandora if i want something different (i have a mobile hotspot). i can also check out maps, read kindle books while waiting in line, review my notes on evernote, etc. it is very handy, especially on crowded public transport (tokyo subway). i have NEVER had apple push any of its products on me. i am kind of surprised you get that impression from apple.

(3)
the ipad (really, just a big ipod) is great for reading, using the internet, etc. the ipad COULD hold my music, but then there wouldn't be room for my books (i have a lot), and more importantly, it is a little unwieldy unless you use bluetooth.

i am glad that i have all three of these, and i have no urge at all to buy inferior products for less money. i've got sony stuff, i've had a zune, and i am no longer interested. in my mind, apple has perfected the portable music player genre.

as for the cost, it is all relative to your means. all three of my things cost about 750 dollars total. that is a pretty hefty price tag. but, they are durable and have lasted for years through daily use. and, more importantly, the ipod is a portable computer in your pocket. the price tag is VERY reasonable.

you know, i still have friends who carry around cd players that play a single cd. lol. hilarious, but true. technology has come a long way in a very short time, and i have no qualms about paying 200-300 dollars for the incredible experience that apple offers.

Oki - you're right to some degree, but just because you owned a Motorola like Gordon Gekko in the movie 'Wall street' doesn't justify we should accept its huge size today ;)

Same with the WALKMAN !

Same now with the iPod Touch and iPhone 4. iPod Nano will live on - the 2 iPods in danger is shuffle and classic. When iPhone and iPod Touch reaches 128 gb I think the classic is gone.

Nano will replace the shuffle soon - as people would like to actually know and see the next numbers on their playlist in this iOS society.

We will see the Nano get wifi and a small iOS function with some limited programs and apps in my view.

Nano will live on for the next 10 years..... I predict :)

It's not too bulky, just too expensive. I'd much rather go jogging with a used shuffle I paid $20 for than a $500 phone that's also much easier to break.

As far as the iPod goes, I love my classic and will never give on the scroll wheel either. Excellent battery life as well. I have an iPhone to do everything else, so a classic to just leave on my iPod speaker dock/clock is perfect.
