Yup, if it's ever left alone for more than a day, it shuts off and the battery is shown as depleted on next boot-up. It's done that for me since day 1 and I've often used it for 2-3 hours with the battery gauge showing 'nothing'. :)

I'm somewhat averse to the iPod classic, as a significant number of people claim that the sound quality is noticeably worse than the 5.5Gs. Any confirmation or refutation on the audio quality end of things would be helpful!

The audio quality on my Classic is fine. I have no complaints from switching from a 3G ipod. It my experience the they sound the exact same. I would take the claims of people who say newer iPods don't sound as good as older models with a grain of salt.

I'm finally throwing in the towel and replacing my faithful 3G iPod with a touch. It'll be going to my mum...

My 3G is still going strong. Somewhat battered sure (I've dropped it, had it in pocket with keys etc), and currently it requires the internal audio connector re-soldering after a botched opening-practice :p But it's working fine. Best "classic" iPod they ever made, IMO.... no moving parts except for the lock switch and the HDD = fantastic, and very pretty backlight on the buttons :)

I finally upgraded to an iPod Touch after all these years, and don't regret it at all. It was a bit of expense, but worth it and still £30 less than what I paid for the 3rd gen back in the day. Not to forget that it's not just an iPod now.. it's a portable video player and the best handheld Wifi web browser I've ever used.

If you really can't justify the expense though, just get a replacement battery for the 3G and it'll have a new lease of life :) It's still a great player, and ironically a few GB larger than the all new Touch so if that's all you want I see no reason not to squeeze every bit of life you can out of it. The batteries are dirt cheap, and easy enough to install. Popping open the iPod is a bit of a swearing contest the first time but you get there, and it's easy enough from there - just be careful with the audio connector inside, ease it out with a sharp knife or something by the plastic part, don't just pull on the ribbon as the solder joints on the connector WILL break!

I've literally dropped my 3G while it was running (so was I), and that's how I "opened" it for the first time, as it split apart on impact and the HDD detached from its connector and skidded across the road. I was sure it was a goner. The outer casing certainly gained a couple of dents and scratches, but I popped the HDD back in its place and clipped it all back together and away it went :) *Very* well made, and TBH I don't think Apple make that standard of quality any more, although I can spot when they do (e.g. the iPod Touch, finally a worthy successor)

I just bought a battery upgrade. Too cheap to pass up. I love this iPod. There's no reason why I can't keep going with it until the HDD dies. It's currently my 10.5 boot installer!

Just thought I'd better add, I don't expect the iPod Touch to survive a smack to the floor like the 3G did. This sucker has glass on the front. If you want a practically invulnerable one though the 3G is your friend (I'm guessing the Classic is pretty tough too, being made of metal and all, but the 3G has stood the test of time and tribulation)

I place this as the 3G iPod of today. Revolutionary and gorgeous. You only have a 9GB music collection. 16GB Touch will last ages and also give you room for TV shows/movies.

Ah! Same here. And I'd have one sitting in the dock next to me if not for the tiny 16gb limit. Wouldn't even hold all my music let alone films and TV shows

I'd set get a new iPod.

And as for toughness, after watching the various iPhone/iPod Touch stress tests on Youtube I'd say they're almost invincible.

Most replacement batteries come with the ideal tool, a sortof green plastic thing that you dig into the plastic/alu split with.

My dad got frustrated with his and hacked it with a screwdriver. Don't do that.
