I've always done my initial TM backups via Ethernet and leave them on WiFi afterwards. I haven't had a problem with the speed most of the time I don't even notice what it is going on.

Does TM use minimal bandwidth so that it doesn't take away from normal usage?

I have 2 computers backing up via Ethernet 24/7 and 3 more on Wifi and so far it does it's job so i can't complain right now.
Basically it's job is for me to not have to worry about it day to day until I need to restore something and it is delivering.

Now I did mod my TM and switched internal drives so if that had any impact I'm not sure.

Time Machine has saved me several times and I've used it since the day it came out. I don't understand why it took you so long. I just did an initial Time Machine backup of 750 GB on a 2009 MBP and it took 4.5 hours over FW800.

Another vote for Time Machine. Never had an issue with it. It does what it does well.

Good for you guys, if it works for you.
It doesn't work on my brand new Apple model released in 2012.
I don't do anything strange, don't route my connection through
a glass of water... It simply does not work.

First time i used time machine is took 1,5 hour to back up 80 gig. After that it seemed to take seconds.

Are you backing up to a pre-existing Time Machine backup? Or is this an entirely new TM backup onto an empty volume?

After I updated my MBA to ML, I used my existing TM usb3 drive.
It took something like 4 hours to backup a few GBs.
So I formatted the drive and started the brand new TM.
The original backup took for ever, probably something like 20-30 hours...
Following backups were also slow as hell.
It has been discussed here before, I'm not the only one with this problem.
Nothing has changed with two ML updates.

CCC took half an hour to do the original 80GB backup on the same drive
I reformatted to use with it.

Here is what I have found.

For a few months ive been using a Time Capsule with TM, and I would only turn my TC on once a week and do a backup wirelessly. The backup was usually around the 20gig mark and it would pretty much take 8hrs or so to do. Slow as ****

Lately I have just been leaving my TC turned on all the time and my TM is set to backup every hour or so and now it takes next to no time to back up.

I'm not sure if you should blame Apple for that one! Initial TM backup can be slow but NOT that slow. I am using TM with a Mac mini 2011/USB2 Disk/Mnt Lion and have had no problem. I have not seen any huge amount of problems in forums wither.

I have seen several people having performance problems with Nas storage like WDC MyBook Live for which I couldn't get to work, performance was as horrible as you describe if it worked at all.

My guess there is something on your end but if CCC does it job, USE IT. It is a great software!

I agree. The OP should probably troubleshoot the drive or something. I've been using TM over wireless to a TC for years, it'll do a couple GB in couple minutes. I also use it with a FW800 external drive, and its very fast, ten's of GB's in a few minutes.

Bummer, sorry to hear that. I had the same issue after the ML update - but wiping the drive and starting over restored speeds to their previous quickness.

I find this... amusing...

The OS X v10.7.5 Supplemental Update is recommended for all users running OS X Lion v10.7.5 and includes the following fixes:

- Resolves an issue that may cause Time Machine backups to take a very long time to complete

Im using time machine for the first time. I have a Buffalo 1tb external hardrive and it took me about 30min to backup 75gb. This HD is usb 3 (I have a macbook air mid 2012).

The problem is the encryptation, it is taking hours!!!!

And I cant stop it.

What happens if I shutdown the Mac? Is there a way to stop? And revert this process?
