The MacBooks are here... with a Glossy screen! Glossy screen is now also an option for MacBook Pros, but there is no matte option for MacBook standards!

How many of us cringe at the thought of doing any real work on a glossy screen (watching DVDs is not real work).

Apple Computer, please give use a matte screen option on the otherwise gorgeous new MacBooks.

Who would say 'no' to this poll? Everyone wants options, even those happy with the gloss screen.

Umm... I hate to break it to you but the MacBook isn't a Pro notebook computer. You can't expect it to have all the options as the MacBookPRO. That's like saying "I want a Mac Mini that has a Dual G5 processor."

Sorry if I come off rude, I just don't like to hear people bitching about stupid things, no offence.

choice is always good but it make manufacturing and holding stock a pain in the ass. and quite frankly, for the average person glossy is probably better. people think ooooooh shiny, must be good!

If they had to choose between making only glossy, and only matte... they should have gone with matte. You'd b***h too if you had a color critical design job. People that know a quality display when they see one know that glossy = terrible. It's not even close to your analogy, as both matte and glossy screens are the same cost. It's just a coating on the screen. Making the screen glossy is an "un-feature" in many many people's opinion.

No, I wouldn't bitch. I would get the MBP, you get what you need that's the whole point.

No, the point is they shouldn't have done that in the first place. Now people have to pay hundreds of dollars more because they want a NORMAL display? That doesn't make any sense at all. If anything you should have to pay more for your glare-infested glossyness.

A better analogy would be buying a sports sedan, but you have to pay extra for a manual transmission. Stupid stupid stupid.

I'm disappointed they did this. And I'm not getting a macbook, but still. I think it should at least be an option, and if that would be to problematic, then no glossy at all. I won't be getting a gloss option on my mbp surely!

What is "normal" in a display? Notebook users overwhelmingly prefer the glossy displays. I prefer the matte displays, myself, but the market has spoken.

Your analogy is just as flawed as the other. A more parallel one would be wanting to buy a Ford Focus but not having an option for tinted windows and having to buy a Five Hundred to get them.

If that is true, which from my experience it isn't, but if it is, its only because most average people think anything shiny is better when in reality it isn't. People always buy shiny things. It should be below Apple to pander to ignorant desires of the general public instead of giving them what is actually better. This is the way Dell and HP operates, it shouldn't be the way Apple does. Apple never was a mass market company, and seemed to be doing pretty well for the last 8 years. So why now do we need this obvious pathetic attempt to "ooh" and "ahh" ignorant people?

1 thing to remember. Glossy or Matte, the new screen is bound to be 1000% better than the 12" dim, dull, lifeless screen of the previous ibook.....

No. If it leads to incresed sales for them, they should do it. There's nothing pathetic about trying to sell as many boxes as possible.

You might as well insist that Nestle should be selling brocolli instead of chocolate.

So, as far as you're concerned, it doesnt matter how much Apple cheapens uup their products, so long as they can sell as many as possible? You wouldn't care if Apple products became on par with Dell?

The coating improves clarity and brightness. It's a crock, but it's one that sells well, like sport utilities. If you walk around a Best Buy or a Circuit City, you'll see the "xbrite" screens having almost wholly replaced the traditional matte finish. Apple isn't pandering; they're making money by selling what people want to buy.

I won't argue that most consumers are pretty uninformed and often stupid, but that's life.

Has anyone looked at the MBP specs today????

The Macbook Pro now offers CTO for a glossy display at no extra charge. In other words, there is minimal to no difference in cost to Apple between the two displays. Why not offer the same choice on the Macbook? That's the real question, not hours of spurious argument about how people should have to pay hundreds more for a matte display.

It's not the same. Apple probably had firm commitments for the matte panels for the MBP, which is why they're still available. I wouldn't be totally surprised if the matte displays on the MBP disappear in the coming months (perhaps when the Rev. B pops up on the scene).

to apple: you lost at least one (and my friends think similar; all wanted to buy new intel mb) definite customer with this glossy ****!

And that's your opinion which you are free to have, it doesn't make it the wrong thing for Apple to use glossy screens. I've used them in the store and they really aren't that bad.

The apple glossy's really just are not that glossy I have once again I will go through the comparison I did, my friend has a MacBook and a gateway with a glossy screen, I have the 17'' MBP and an old dell that are both matte we lined all 4 up the Dell and the Gateway on both ends with the matte MBP next to the Dell and the Macbook next to the Gateway, and all 4 were in a line, when we did this we saw that yes there was a differnece between the 2 apple screens but it was not a huge difference, however the difference between the gateway glossy and the macbook glossy seemed to be a bigger difference then the 2 apple screens.

I orgionally hated the glossy screen and was not going to get a MacBook because of the glossy, I even started my own tread slamming the glossy. But I caved and bought a Black MacBook anyway. as it turns out this display has the best colors and brightness I've ever had on any of my notebooks. I love it! Photo's look great, everything is sharp and clear, much more then my old powerbook. as for the reflection it has been a non-issue for me. I usually find myself saying, wow, what a great picture!

But as a side note... I do wish apple would make it an option for those who would rather have the matte.

MacBook Pros are available with non-glossy screens.

With glossy screens being pretty much the norm now, perhaps Apple was not able to source a 13" matte screen at a reasonable price. For the MacBook Pros, the extra cost was able to cover the extra expense. Just a theory.
