I am currently with T-Mobile and my contract with them just ended. I have been itching to switch just for the iPhone to AT&T.

And now I hear a newer iPhone is coming out in July timeframe, should I get the iPhone 3G or wait for the updated iPhone 3G?

I can stay on T-mobile without a contract for another few months.

1) There have been numerous topics about this almost daily, you should search to find your answer.
2) Why are you asking us? Yes, there will probably be a new iPhone in July but noone has any idea what improvements it's going to contain and probably wont until June.

It's really for yourself to decide. Noone can help you make the choice. Even if a new one does come out, you will still have a fantastic piece of kit in the 3G, and if you are still not satisfied you can always sell it and buy the new model.

I'm going to keep a running count of these threads.

"People who can't think for themselves"

They grow up get married and ask their spouse, "Honey, do I like this?" when they go shopping. :)

To the OP, I would recommend waiting until July. If a new one comes out, you are golden. If not, then switch anyway. :)

Wow, thanks for the replies guys. I thought I was on the right forum to ask this question because its MacRumours and members here might know better than what I know about the newer iPhone.

I dont need advice on marriage, relationships or jobs etc, I am a grown up and can handle life just as well if not better than anyone who has an iPhone on this forum. And I did a search to look for threads and couldnt find the one, may be I could have searched a little harder. But still, thanks for your invaluable insights, you have been very helpful.

BTW thanks for the warm welcome.

Thanks bytethese.

Sarcastic gratitude is not necessary either.

How you could have NOT found an answer if you searched is beyond me. We have at least one of these threads created each day. Literally.

And what kind of answer were you looking for? "DOnt buy niow!!! THE new one is guna be AMAZING!!" or something along that line? Would you have accepted and followed that advice had it been said? Confused I guess...

And one last thing. If your feelings are going to be hurt by snarky or sarcastic comments, I wouldn't suggest utilizing this forum as your primary source of information.

What the hell did you expect?

You have told us that you expect a new phone is coming out in July, so you must have done your research already.

Sorry for the harsh responses but as stated above, there is a literaly a thread every day about this topic and I fail to believe you actually searched.

Online forum is the last place where I would get hurt. I welcome all comments, but its only fair that I retaliate to comments that ask for it.

And I did search (string - 'to get iPhone') and I perused through first two pages and couldnt find relevant information, so I decided to post a new thread. I am sorry it ticked off so many nerves.

I was looking for a healthy discussion on what would be the appealing features of the new iPhone. Would the features make this iPhone less useful etc. From what I understand 3G standard will remain unchanged, Wifi G standard is fine for my personal use, having multiple applications running is desirable etc, I am looking for a discussion along these lines and not for a decision from any members on the forum on whether I should buy one or not.

If you realize, this is part of my research. If you decide to help or be part of this discussion, thats your prerogative and I see why some comments are necessary. But I did the search and also some research on this.

I don't understand why people have to be so hostile sometimes? If you don't like the thread, don't reply surely? :p Not my place to tell people what to do though.

Anyway, iPhones seem to have a high resale value, I would say buy now, then if a new one comes out but the current one is good enough for you then you haven't missed out on three months of iPhone goodness :D If you prefer the new one, you should be able to sell the current one and hardly lose any dosh (I sold the iPhone for more than the 3G cost).

All the best

If you are going to be disappointed in July not to have the latest model, then wait. You will sign a new two year contract with AT&T whenever you get your phone, and it will be at least 18 months before you will be allowed to get another subsidized phone of any model from AT&T. For myself, I moved from a first generation iPhone to the 3G about three weeks ago, despite all the speculation (which is all it is, even - or especially - here at Mac Rumors). It suits my needs much better than the first generation phone, so I moved now. No matter what anyone says, technology always advances and you will be out of date at some point, no matter what you do. If you want/need it now, get it. If you don't and can wait, go ahead and wait, but sometime in the two years after you jump, you will again be out of date.

I suspect your search string wasn't well formed to find the answer to the question you wanted answered, though.

Just Answer The Original Question!!!!!!!!

Every Forum Is Filled With Morons Who Say Search. Don't Answer Than, Its Really That Simple.

Maybe He Was Just Looking For Some Input

And Who Are You People To Say Who And What Threads Are Created?

Never mind the stupid responses you received. This is generally a good place for advice, there are a few people who always have something to say if you post and its not something new. You would think someone forces them to click on these threads..

Im in the same boat you are in, except with Sprint. Im going to hold out for the new iPhone. To me, there are more reasons that just phone improvement, im hoping for some improvement in the plan. As it stands right now, the iPhone plan is ridiculous. You pay for data and then ATT wants even more for text messaging. Get a calculator out and add up what you would pay over the course of a year and compare that to your current plan. If nothing changes with the plan costs i may just keep holding out until ATT loses its exclusive contract.

Do you think someone else can really answer that for you. Isnt this a matter of choice. Your t-mobile contract just expired, so if you wan the iphone today all you have to do is decide to get it. What is so hard that you ask for help.

I didn't even know sprint was still around? Just messin...but seriously, there will be a new hardware update with better specs so if people can hold out, it would be a good idea. No reason to sign a new 2 year contract and then 4 months from now a new model coming out. You won't be able to upgrade and have to pay the "no commitment" price.

For different rates, doubt it. For different carriers, doubt it.

He is not looking for someone to hold his hand and make a big boy decision. Maybe he is just looking for input from others who have made this choice already. Is that too hard to understand?

It depends on what you want out of your iphone. If you're going to use for music and media then wait for the rumored 32G iphone. If you're using it as a phone, email, and internet device and chat device you can get it now. The only real improvements rumored for June are 32G and a video camera and better quality camera.

I'm on T-Mobile right now as well. My contract just ended about a month ago and I'm waiting to see what happens in June before I make the jump.

The comment you made above is what caught my eye though. Are you going to sign a new contract with TMo in a few months by choice or are you telling us that's how long TMo allows you to stay out of contract?

I would wait at this point - for the sake of four months you don't have sit there for 16 months with a likely weaker handset.

Its your personal choice, my t-mobile contract is ending next week, and I will be buying the iphone 3g the same day it expires. To me, waiting another 4 months is not going to happen. I have wanted to get rid of t-mobile for about 8 months and have wanted an iphone since then, my mom didn't want to cancel our contract even though I offered to pay the ETF. So for me, I have already waited long enough, and another 4 months will drive me crazy.

If you can hold out until June, then get the iphone then. If your like me and can't wait, get the 3g now.

Thanks for all the enthusiastic replies. I appreciate all the sincere responses.

Now this has really made me think twice about getting iPhone, I was going to AT&T store to get one tonight. But the decision now is pending until I do some more research on what features I can live without in the new iPhone and what I would definitely want upgraded if at all it is upgraded.

I am going to use it for everything I think, I have an iPod Nano that I use during workout and sometimes in my car listening to Podcasts, but the iPhone with will do everything, even replace my trusty old TI-82 that I use for work.

But the thing is, until I get it I dont know what all I will be using it for. But I usually make most out of my stuff than most average people.

good move IMO. if you can tough it out for 4 more months, it would be a good idea. no point in signing a 2 year contract and not have the ability to get the new phone at a upgrade price.

'tough it out'? Good grief. Yes, waiting for the next iPhone is definitely toughing it out.

Yea because he was looking for input because he has tmobile in the mean time and everyone was giving him crap

This is just moronic and stupid. Why is his question dumb? Your just another one of those morons who likes to sound ignorant, I understand.
