to jailbreak or not - thoughts please

I have been thinking about jailbreaking for awhile - mostly because i want to be able to customize to my liking (i'm sorry but green is such an ugly color in sms :D) BUT i thought i would get you're thoughts on why apple doesnt allow this feature - or why they don't have apps for customization? please share your thoughts - and be nice - it seems people are really mean on these threads. thanks!

jailbreak your faceoff. be careful to follow all directions to the T. it's your phone and you can do what you'd like with it.

as far as warranty, don't bring it back to apple jailbroken. if you have trouble with your device that needs applecare, make sure you restore it back to original firmware. the 'genius' bar will give you a hard time and most likely void your warranty.

Jailbreaking what, iPhone 2G, 3G, or 3GS?


Personally, jailbreaking is a personal preference. I like to be able to jailbreak so I can customize and personalize my iPhone 2G.

"Apple fears opening its iPhone platform to non-approved apps could cost it money. It earns 30 percent for every app sold, but would get nothing from those not sold via iTunes. Most important, however, it fears that opening up the OS would lead to piracy of sanctioned iPhone apps as well as create a giant iPhone platform to play and copy infringing content like movies and games."

In short, they want money. And they do not want to deal with thousands and thousands of angry customers who have no idea what they're doing when it comes to jailbreaking and customizing. Just look at the forums here, it's a perfect example. How many members have issues with jailbreaking? Because they have no idea what they're doing and end up causing problems for themselves.
 
I've jailbroken and unlocked before. This was before the iPhone 3G came out and the iPhone wasn't in Canada.

I know alot of people who like to jailbreak for customization, if you really want to customize the screen then why not?

Me personally I like to just leave it to factory settings, but thats my personal taste.

A word of caution, I've seen this on a few different jailbroken models, including iPod touch and iPhone, sometimes settings that are changed on jailbroken models don't get restored even after a restore in iTunes. It's strange, I don't know how to tell which settings will stay or be reset when a restore is done, but just a word of caution.

I jailbroke and used the app to hide icons I don't ever use (Stocks app). I then restored, upgraded to 2.2.1 and since upgraded to 3.0

The Stocks app remains hidden. I can't be bothered to re-jailbreak to get it to show again.

you should have no problems jailbreaking the 3G. enjoy the ability to customize your 3G to your heart's content.

ookkkk thanks! when i jailbreak it (i'm taking it to a place to get it done i think) - do i have to worry about losing any information thats already on there (i.e. calendar, contacts or music/ringtones?)

Um, don't take it anywhere, the software is freely available on the Internet. :) Download redsn0w for your OS and jailbreak your iPhone. It also will not erase any existing data on your device. More info at:

Save your money, do it yourself. it's really not that hard. For them it's an easy buck for a nearly automated process.

When you jailbreak, you can just do it and you won't lose any information.

Just make sure you back it up in iTunes before hand

Nope there are two easy ways to do it...Redsnow and pwnage tool... I used pwnage tool first and had some issues with Icy and Cydia running and a few other themes were giving me fits. so I restored>and rejailbroke with Redsnow..

google it for instructions from iclarified. :D

Edit: Search the iphone Hacks sub forum on here. There is a plethora of information there.

Taking your iPhone somewhere to get jailbroken probably results in you paying money for a normally free service that you can do. Or they might put something on your iPhone that you don't know about.

Unless if you're asking a friend to help you, which is peachy.

Heres the thing, in this day and age devices can be "reflashed" on a wim!, just think of the iPhone as a computer, you mess it up? No Problem! You re-format and reinstall the OS, with firmware its even easier, as its a pre-generated image, that can be restored back to the device within a couple of minutes, so as long as you have a recent backup, you are good.

Given this, there really is no reason not to jailbreak, just understand that the third party apps you downloaded may have bugs, which may cause problems for your device, but then again so could app store apps!

First off, jailbreaking isnt the issue. If you read how to use the program (either categories or sb settings) to hide icons, you would know that you should unhide them all before you restore if you want them visible again.

Second, even if you didnt you can get them back in a flash. All you have to do is enable and then disable restrictions in settings and they will unhide.

Please stop spreading rumors about things which are false. Enough people are confused enough about jailbreaking without people telling them things that arnt true.

As far as other settings such as a different carrier name or battery % which can stay after a restore, all it takes is a "restore as a new iphone" instead of from a backup to get rid of those tweaks.

Hmm, it was not my intent to 'spread rumours', so sorry if thats what you think. And to be honest, what I said wasn't false, you even agreed to what I said in your post.

I was merely giving the OP a heads up. I did not say jailbreaking is bad because some settings will be unchanged if you restore, I just wanted to let him know that could happen with a jailbroken phone.
 
Jailbreaking was worth it to me simply for sbsettings. I don't really use any other feature except Categories, which I only use to group my games together. All the themes I tried had something about them that I didn't like so I just went back to the factory look.

Oh I did use some theme to change the look of my signal bars to an apple logo that fills up with better reception.
 
I'm going to go ahead and give you a suggestion not many have given. To the OP: Search these forums next time. This question has been answer since 2007. Also, those threads contain a good deal of discussion pertaining the pro and cons of jailbreaking.
 
Not....unless you can stay disciplined and not install lots of themes and stuff. I did this and my phone was slooooow. I had homescreen, status notifiers, themes, backgrounds....etc running all the time. It really bogged my phone. Several did it simply to tether, but you can do that now with 3.0 and the ipcc, so real need now other than the cool factor. I'm strictly the way it comes now...super fast 3GS.

I have a theme installed (custom dock, background, and battery) with sb settings and there isn't any noticable slowdown. I run with about 150MB free memory.

if you have the time reset all settings then put in DFU mode and restore... that should do it.
 
just jailbroke my iphone 3gs and now tethering no longer works. The computer no longer gets an ip address when tethered. Time to restore it back to normal.

I was waiting for someone to say this. Jailbreaking is great (and I'll put in another vote for following the guides on iClarified, you can't go wrong with them and they give you handy links to download everything from) but I don't use any themes or do anything to customise the way my phone looks.

Basically I had my phone for a whole month before I cracked back in January and jailbroke the hell out of it, themes and all. After a week I went back to stock, 'cause my phone became waay too slow.

However, I rejailbroke and have had it this way for months now. Basically I think that as long as you're selective about what you download you're fine. I use jailbreak apps (like, say cycorder or a jailbreak text app) with no problems. I'm also fine with things like SBS Settings, but I rarely run things in the background and I haven't touched themes. Themes and running things in the background will most likely 'cause your phone to get incredibly laggy.

You can really only try for yourself, some people don't mind it, but having simple things like sms taking 30s to open was unusable for me. But hey, give it a go, it's the work of 10 minutes to change it back and if you're smart about what you install it's great.
 
I jailbreak because i want the most out of my phone. I want to be able to customize in ways apple refuses to let me. If i kill a extra 10-30% of my battery doing background tasks with insomnia and/or backgrounder then its my fault but i think apple is being unreasonable by not letting people do it. SBSsettings rocks too, i love being able to quickly turn off wifi when i leave the house so im not attacked by wifi popups all day for protected places i cant connect to. Jailbrekers get a bad rap because some people install apps that have been cracked. i gladly pay for app store apps and non app store apps, people should be paid for their work. Jailbreak to get the most out of your phone.

There are jailbreak alternatives from the simple pdanet to the use of terminal, are your saing the hacked ippc file you are using aint working?
