I jailbreak because i want the most out of my phone. I want to be able to customize in ways apple refuses to let me. If i kill a extra 10-30% of my battery doing background tasks with insomnia and/or backgrounder then its my fault but i think apple is being unreasonable by not letting people do it. SBSsettings rocks too, i love being able to quickly turn off wifi when i leave the house so im not attacked by wifi popups all day for protected places i cant connect to. Jailbrekers get a bad rap because some people install apps that have been cracked. i gladly pay for app store apps and non app store apps, people should be paid for their work. Jailbreak to get the most out of your phone.

This can be extremely annoying but it's a feature you can turn off.

There are jailbreak alternatives from the simple pdanet to the use of terminal, are your saing the hacked ippc file you are using aint working?

That is correct, the hacked ipcc file no longer worked after I jail broke the phone.

I just restored the backup and now tethering is working again.

I did use the pdanet tethering app while jailbroken. The app does work and is simple to use but is nowhere as seamless as the ipcc tethering hack.

Do or do not. There is no try.

Just do whatever pleases you, but don't agonize like that.

you should definitely do it, its pretty much risk free if you follow the few steps there are ;)

intrested but sceptical

I have a couple of questions on jail breaking my iphone 3gs.

First off i've heard that jail breaking the phone can cause it to start running slow and even stop working completely ie: bricked. Ive also read that if you try updating the jail broken phone through itunes it can cause the phone to brick. If this happens is it 100% reversable by a simple restore? Is there a chance that if my iphone becomes bricked that i wont be able to restore it and be left without a phone?

Secondly, i was wondering if once the phone is jail broken is there a way to back up the jail broken settings (once i have it set to my liking) on possibly a seperate computer than the original back up so if something were to happen to the phone needing a restore, could i restore it back to my jail broken settings without having to re-customize my phone entirely?

Thirdly, do any of you guys think that apple is going to be coming out with any critical updates that would be more benifical to restore the jail broken phone back to its original state, get the legit update, and then re jail break the phone, any time soon?

This is probably a stupid question, but I like quite a few of the apps from the app store. If i jailbreak my phone can I continue to run these apps and update them from the app store without any problems?

thankfully both are untrue. :)

I've never heard of anyone actually bricking their iPhone before, only thinking it is. As for updates from Apple, you'll need to re-jailbreak each time so wait until the Dev Team releases a new jailbreak before updating. If anything goes wrong, you can always put the phone in DFU mode and restore a stock firmware. :)

Sort of. Look into AptBackup. It does backup your files or programs but backs up some settings and a list of installed apps. The file is placed in a directory that iTunes backs up normally.

Unfortnately, no. For obvious reasons, Apple won't give full control of the file system. :)

Yes, jailbreaking only adds additionL functionality and does not take any oiginal functionality away. :)

don't. it's not worth jailbreaking, save for Backgrounder. I have never jail broken any of my 3 iPhones yet.;)

So how are you able to determin if jailbreaking is worth it or not? I have jailbroke my phone and decided it wasn't worth it for me and restored my phone. Just didn't find anything that I had to have.

Just jailbreak. Its easy, simple, fast, and gives you many options Apple doesn't supply you! You can always restore to fix everything back to normal. And it's not illegal either!

It is so simple and it getting even easier. Apple is a company that wants to make money and jailbreaking takes away from them making money off you. I jailbreak my phone because why don't we have this stuff already. apple should allow us to custmize are iPhones already but they won't because they want to add it later and then make us pay for it.

Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything, but do you think it's worth it to jailbreak just for custom SMS tones? Or is it best just to keep it legit?

Some of you pirates and thieves need to stop correlating jailbreaking with stealing software and profit from Apple. Many like myself, we jailbreak because we like the freedom it offers.

We do not use it to steal software. Apple has not lost a cent from me.

Sure, and if that's all you use it for, your phone should have the same performance.

Jailbreaking is fun and it's nice to do whatever "I want to do to my iPhone" and if I want Backgrounder, PDAnet Tethering, unlimited themes, Weather icons w/actual weather, winterboard, springboard, reflective dock flow, and many others, I can just DO IT!....:cool::cool:

i had the 16G 3G phone that was jailbroken.
I got the 3Gs on launch day. The 3Gs was used for a day then reboxed waiting for a jailbreak program to become available.
The dock area on the standard iphone makes it look extrememly cheap, which is why I prefer customizing the dock. I also like the ability to customize my ringtones, sms tones, irealsms, and other programs not in the apps store (not cracked one)
I have run cracked apps but if i liked them they were purchased. If not they were simply deleted.
I would recommend jailbreaking. If you don't like what it has to offer simply restore the phone

Depends on what you need/want. Some people simply jailbreak cuz they want to skin/theme their home screen, or to be able to install applications like MvTube (download youtube videos onto your ipod), or setup an SSH connection to their device so they can modify some of the innards of the ipod/iphone (kinda like how I do so to download my screen shots, or to customize the 'host' file to block known spam banners and such in safari).

Using one of the methods found on blog.iphone-dev.org (QuickPwn or PwnageTool), you can jailbreak with very little risk of actually bricking your iphone, as you mentioned a simple restoration fixes the problem. Do read carefully at the information regarding 2.2 and the iPhone 3G (if you have that model) as there's a note about making sure you'll have a chance of Soft-Unlocking the 3G down the road if you follow the directions carefully. (meaning to be able to use a carrier other than Rogers/AT&T).

hey quick question - if i jailbreak today and say, next week, i buy three apps from the app store and 5 songs. are all the songs that i buy when its jailbroken lost when its restored?

I am new to iPhone got my 3GS two weeks ago,
so far playing with it and testing it's built in functions
3.0 like video, cut n paste, horizontal keabord view, Sms,Mms etc, etc.....
All this works nice n sweet
BUT there are basic useful functions I still miss or
didn't find in iPhone Gs...

Here is my incomplete wish list (feel free to add to it)

1.no built in FM reciever like on all Nokia's and most mobile phones.
2.No multiple lists in contacts to send bulk Sms to specified list ( basic function on all nokia's again)
3.No way to dowload email attachments
4. No Flash display on websites with embed flash videos
5. No way to download Anything on the hard drive exept photos.
6. No free access to iphone' hard drive in order to ménage files and folders.
7. No access to special characters option on the foreign (including English)keyboards, simply ridiculous!?!
8. No option to use iPhone on multiple computers (exept by hacking Itunes Library file on all computers....Annoying)
9. No Divx codec video, and probably missing lots of other
popular HD space friendly video codecs..?
10. No stereo speakers ( hardware)
11. No removable memory (hardware)
12. No removable battery (hardware)
13. No second videocamera for video chat and conferencing like on most phones.(hardware)
14.No built in system tools like Mac OS X terminal, networking, disc tool, etc
probably list would go on... But that's just my newbe observations .

Question:
How many of missing options from my list I would get
and what additional options if I Free my iPhone from Jail?

if I Jailbreak my iPhone GS (exept for hardware of course)?

8.

I love my jailbroken phone for 3 main features: I like changing my background and icon appearances, I like being able to text while browsing the web and not having to close safari/open message app/close message app/etc., and I like having my calendar/time/weather/message status on my lockscreen :D
