The volume control is done in segments, so quick strokes of the flat bit of the stem gives an audible 'pip' as it raises or lowers a bit.

The noise from the case was probably the charging notification noise.

I really like the sound quality on the Gen 2 pros. How ever, at least for me, the Gen 1 pro have ( I still have’em ) a better fit and seal in my ears!

I am disappointed. Sound quality is better than the APP1 but as I have posted elsewhere I am not happy at all with the ANC which I think is barely any better than the 1st generation (which were Ok but not great). Everybody seems to be raving about the ANC on these so I am wondering if mine are faulty, I am going to look into with Apple support.

I also have the new Bose buds and the APP2 are not on the same planet ANC wise.
You should do a fit tip test under the Airpod settings.

Ah right. Thanks. I'm having more success with adjusting volume now, but it's still a bit fiddly. Not the best. The one major criticism I'd have about the APPs, after the discomfort with the standard eartips.

I’ve noticed that if my fingers are dry and/or cold it can make the volume swipe finicky. Works great for me under ‘normal’ circumstances.

So obviously it's some sort of capacitive touch control. It's not that big a deal tbh; I rarely have to adjust the volume as theANC is pretty good.

One thing I do notice the ANC can't cope with, is some motorbike engine noises. Like they cut right through the ANC, but I can't hear other traffic noises at all. Must be particular frequencies/resonances that it can't cope with. Annoying, cos it's always those crappy little scooters that are about everywhere these days. The sooner they're all electric, the better.

The problem, at least for me, when comparing first and second generations is that it's a little unfair on the older ones. I bought the original ones when they were released, have worn them virtually every day and have been battering them hard recently since I got back into running and use them for musical accompaniment.

That has caused them to start to malfunction and brought about me buying the 2nd gen yesterday. So early impressions are that the ANC is slightly better, though somehow different, while the audio reproduction is a significant improvement. When walking in town I only ever listened to podcasts with my old ones as music sounded tinny and flat, whereas today I was really impressed with it while listening to some Apple Music playlists.

But that's the thing. I'm comparing brand new 2nd gen with 3-year old 1st gen. I have no doubt the quality and functionality of every aspect from the ANC to the battery life has diminished with use - as you would expect. I cannot now remember of course how much better they used to be, so while I am sure that the 2nd gen are better, I would not necessarily recommend an update to anyone unless, like me, their old ones were reaching the end of their life.

Because I blame running with my old ones as something that has accelerated their decline, I'm saving my new ones from that same fate. I've also bought a pair of Anker Soundcore Sport X10 that will be my dedicated running ones. I've had a play with them this evening at home and am pretty impressed with the quality considering the £65 price point.

As much as I love my Airpods, they are not worth 3.5 times the cost of these Anker ones.

My APP1 were replaced a week before buying the APP2 via the service program for launch APP so I was able to compare brand new (with the newer inset grill) with the APP2.

I’m not sure why ANC would get worse with usage/over time, especially if they’re kept fairly clean.

Re the price, yes, it can be hard to justify such a premium. Especially for something that may only last a couple years before the battery life gets so bad that they need to be replaced.

the second gen is an order of magnitude better than first gen, in sound quality.

pretty much across the whole spectrum, lows, mids, high end, sound stage, the mids being way less congested . All way better.

I have some very flat studio mains and nearfeild monitors that are my reference for sound quality , made by Adams, that cost what my car did….used in acoustically treated room. That sound is very accurate, but also can be very fatiguing over time, most would not even like that type of sound to enjoy music with, but it is my baseline reference.

the first gen was disappointing from the get go, for me, and never would pass the seal test. And still will not.
the second gen passed the seal test first time, I think this has a lot to do with overall frequency response.

the venting changed. And the second gen does not pressure up when installing them, like the first gen does, and I bet this also helps with less tunneling , many experienced with first gen.

the first gen was huge let down in sound quality, other things made them ok, like blue tooth working well, anc, worked well, but the sound quality sucked, and still does, I can compare both and own both still. Both have been kept very clean, and are in perfect condition. Battery life is fine on both, the batteries as long as the work, will not affect frequency response,

many said the sound quality on second gen was much improved, so when the $200 sale started, I bit.
even at $250 I would be happy with the upgrade over first gen.

Just my thoughts on the two.
