Don't get you undies in a bunch. Apple is probably teaching someone (MacUser) a lesson. I think we hit it right on this time and the announcement has simply been delayed a few days.

I would say BillGates thought could well be true ... and it might be even longer until the machines appear?

MacUser is the most trusted and well read mag here in the UK. I honestly do not think they would spread such a rumor unless they were totally convinced that it was true.

And I have got no connection with the mag apart from being a reader and subscriber for many years.

(The Cinema Display gets 'em drolling too.) Besides, you people claim to be Mac fans, haven't any of you checked out this info on Apple's website? http://www.apple.com/powermac/specs.html

Read the fine print: at Final Cut Pro and Adobe Photoshop, two applications which are specifically optimized for the g4 processer and altivec. Don't get me wrong, the (m/g)hz myth is real, but not by as large a margin as Apple would like us to think.(ie, a G4 800 is certainly faster than, say, a 1200 P4 (that's a random number.. i'm not sure if there is one at that speed), but not faster at most things than a 2.2 northwood, and probably not more so in most areas than a 1.7.

And before anyone starts throwing a hissyfit, I love macs, i've used them for twelve years, and i've never had a pc.

let's not all point the finger at MacUser....

if it was a lie to begin with.....most of us here believed it and hyped it even more....

nobody's fault but our own...

I like MacUser too... No disrespect intended.

Who know why Apple changed their minds. But they did. They were going to be announced today. There will be speed bumped G4s very very soon.

No G5 just speed bumped G4s with a few other surprises.

Within 48 hours???

I am with you; I could be VERY wrong but wasn't Photoshop written for mac and ported to Windows? I never trust Photoshop comparisons.

Check out some REAL benchmarks of a mac vs PC, It'll be surprising...

Barefeats have got a 1.8Ghz P4 and a dual G4 800, I'd trust Rob-Art Morgan's benchmarks more than Apple's marketing propeganda anyday. oh and it does mostly prove the Mhz Myth to be true for a photoshop, it even proves that for non realtime, photo/3d work the G4 can even smoke a P4 without using both CPUs or Altivec (allowing for the 1Ghz speed advantage of the PC).

Barefeats G4 vs P4 Benchmarks

What it doesn't tell you is that a Pentium 4 processor can run 4 times as many Real Time Audio Suite plug-ins in Protools LE than an 867Mhz G4 can. That's a benchmark that proves it's RAW speed, not something that can be broken down over time, but realtime processing power.

search on the Digidesign User Conference for benchmarks, there's a lot of posts in different areas about the tests people have been doing on various machines.

Personally, any G4 is gonna blow away my Beige G3 for anything I use it for (mainly running Protools LE & software synths). I'm waiting for a way faster mac before I even start saving for a new one. It's very annoying to buy a computer that used to smoke all the PCs my friends had only for the Athlon XP, Pentium 4 and G4 to rocket to really high speeds with the macs only keeping with the current PCs at a very small number of tasks by using dual CPUs and Altivec instructions. a 1.2Ghz G4, G5 or whatever will be on my shopping list one day, I'm just not gonna even start saving for a new mac till motorola get their skates on and bring out some super quick CPUs that not only faster than the current models but significantly faster than PCs at everything. I never plan to go PC, I've put up with far too much abuse off £500 worth of nut's and bolts owning PC freaks over the years to join their badly designed, cheap and nasty little windows-centric world.

not that I'm in any way irrate over the situation :D

That is SUCH an unfair test; the video cards are different and they don't even know the full specs for the cards they were using. Also, comparing a DP to a single processor machine using programs that apperently don't support multiprocessing.

My question is, why doesn't Bryce 5 handle multiprocessing when it runs under OSX?

hey.. i'm not pissed

I'm not really going to strike back at macuser.
I'm not actually that mad, just disappointed.

But I hope the next time a rumor comes along,
even if it is a well-renowned source such as
MacUser, it's met with a high degree of scrutiny.

There will be no wine before it's time!

BTW, Macs rule

Well, in my opinion, MacUser just moved one notch closer to Spymac's tabloid status.

I don't mean to be all angry at them, but it is frustrating for many of us who are waiting to purchase a Powermac and just keep on having to wait. It's like dangling a juicy steak in front of a starving man who refuses to eat fast-food burgers (PCs).... and then jerking it away.

ARRGH!!!! :(

Or, you could go vegetarian and not give a damn. :D

I'm not vegetarian.

G5. G5. G5. G5. G5. Chant it with me... Apple, you listening?

[nope]

JESUS guys, they get one ****ing thing wrong and you all abandon them. Wake up to yourselves, you're just upset because you were pittiful enough too fall victim to hype.

is macuser the one who started the 1 ghz power mac rumor?

we are still in the 22nd of january of 2002 and who knows in the remaining hours if apple will reach that watermark?

Hey - tell me about how frustrating this wait it!

I'm desperate for a new tower, and for once in my life I've got enough cash - in fact, I've got to spent the money by April 5th before the Tax Man gets it!
What a hard life eh?!

hold on to your cash for a litttle while

...and you will get that 1 ghz tower you have been waiting for

... it will be "good" at least until apple comes out with a shiny 2 ghz model which we definitiely won't see until well into 2004 at the rate we seem to be going right now with motorola

LOL - Yup, we are falling to the hype, but when you are waiting for a new powermac, and even have the cash on hand like littlejim, it's frustrating so we're just venting.

"Hell hath no fury like a macfan scorned!" :D

Well, Motorola has on their roadmap that the G5 will only go to about 2GHz and then the G6 kicks in at 2GHz+

Is that the G6 that MacUser are saying will be released a week next Tuesday ;).
(Sorry, couldn't resist that!)

In my opinion, I don't really care if the next machine I buy is a G4 or G5, or even if it's 1Ghz or 1.5Ghz. I just want the best I can get on the day, and that it's not going to be overtaken for a couple of months. That's about all you can ask for.
I know whatever the next Mac I get, I'll be using it as my main machine in three or four years time. I've still got my 8500/120 running my Internet connection, and two printers! And I've got big plans for my G3/400 when it gets retired!
