Today, I walked into the Verizon store with intentions to buy a Motorola Droid to try it out and possibly even keep it. There were 2 employees and 4 different customers (including myself) in the store, so I waited.

As I was standing, I hear this employee telling a customer about the Motorola Droid. The employee was saying things like "The Droid is faster than the iPhone, more unique, better apps"

I told the employee, "Excuse me, how is it faster when all of the speed tests say otherwise? How is it more unique? And the apps? Last I checked 100,000 apps using a simplistic method with easy payment (gift cards can be done) beats 14,000 any day. I had all intentions to buy a Motorola Droid today, but you really know how to turn off a customer." Then I said to the customer, "If you want a real comparison, I'll tell you the pros and cons of each."

Anyways, I took the customer outside and now they are buying a little phone called the iPhone from a company who doesn't need to put down other products in order to sell. ;)

They work for Verizon, of course they are going to talk up the Droid and its apps and highlight the strengths over its competitors. Also, I'm confused--you said that you were interested in a Droid and you end up bashing it to a potential customer at the Verizon store? You must have thought it was a decent handset if you wanted one.

OP, I totally know what you mean. Some time ago I was working on a promotion for a new LG phone, and there was a girl there promoting the Samsung Omnia. Now, I understand trying to highlight the best features of the phone but that girl was outright lying about stuff she said the Omnia had and the iPhone didn't. That is just not right.

Confused here. If you thought all that, why were you even in the store planning on buying a Droid? You didn't buy the Droid just because the employee "put down" the iPhone????

Was that really necessary? The guys an idiot but he's just doing his job.

Maybe the customer was asking a comparison to the iPhone and the salesman did his job and said everything possible to make a sale? To the OP if you don't want to hear iPhone bashing then by no means visit any AT&T/iPhone competitor.

People should be doing their own research on items they want to purchase. I have never ever gone to a store and listen to a employee tell me about something I wanted to buy, I walk in, know exactly what I want and get out of there.

When I bought my MBP, grabbed an employee told him what I wanted, he got it, I paid and go out, must of been the easiest sale of the day for him.

Its sad, but thats what Verizon has to do. They know all the cool things the iPhone can do. It has the wow factor. They probally thought the Droid could beat the iphone, but they must be wrong. So they gave up hopes of it coming to their network, and now bash it, to make it sound better. And I doubt you where going to buy a droid either. You have a 3GS 32GB!

op, do you feel proud of yourself?

I hope you get a commission as otherwise, what's the point of doing it? Maybe their fam was on verizon and they wanted to all be on the same network. Maybe coverage was a concern for them. I doubt you brought those points up however

Also, If you knew which phone was better for you why did you even go there to begin with?

Was that really necessary? The guys an idiot but he's just doing his job.

It wasn't necessary. Salesmen job is to sell products

It's not as if the Droid is bad...

The Droid is an excellent device, the iPhone is an excellent device. The iPhone isn't the say all and end all of cell phones. Boy it's so good to be able to have an objective point of view unlike fanboys.

I think you missed a very important part of somebody being in sales. In order to sell something, the sales people have to make the product sound better than the competitor. Every sales people does that. Do you go to a Ford dealer and expecting a Ford sales person to say that a Chevy has better vehicles and you should buy a Chevy?

Have you never seen the Mac vs. PC commercials?

It must be comfortable under your rock.

Processor speed
Droid: Cortex-A8 clocked at 550mhz
iPhone: Cortex-A8 clocked at 600mhz

+2. I'd like to see a response to this.

Wow, really?

The OP can't be serious. Why would the OP be buying a Driod in the first place, only to turn around and make a potential iPhone sale? And of which he made no money. (I say potential because the OP has no proof of the purchase)

This reeks of another poorly veiled Droid bashing.

What would really be funny is if the OP went back in and brought the Droid.:D

If the OP is serious, please send him a girl scout badge.

Wow. To embarrass a salesman, anyone, in front of someone else, is just poor behavior. You are entitled to your opinions, OP. But this guys' job is to make sales for Verizon.

With that said, the op essesntially robbed him of his commission. Commission is how he pays for his food, rent, family, etc

You took that away from him over a silly phone

You know he is probably talking ill about you to his friends and family right? I know I would be apple fan or not

Even if I were the biggest apple fan but happened to work at Verizon, you can bet I would be trying to sell verizon phones over apple. Why? Because
1) it's my job
2) I gain no commission from selling apple products

No, that's not why he left the store without the Droid. It was the nature by which the employee was trying to sell the product which influenced the original poster's decision. When you spend money on any product, you are not just buying that individual item but the services, support, and reputation of the company behind it.

Yeah.......Apple would never put other products down......hmmm "I'm a PC"

I resent people saying he was only doing his job. An employee should never lie to a customer to get a sale, or even give an opinion influenced by which company he is representing. If he wants to say that the Droid beats the iphone, he needs to use factual statements. If he says Verizon has better 3G coverage, thats OK because its a fact. If he says the Droid has more apps, thats a lie...

For those questioning why he didn't buy the Droid only because of the salesperson, this is marketing 101. To a customer the employee assisting him represents all of the company, if the employee rude, then the customer will perceive the company as being rude, and so forth. So it is completely understandable that he didn't buy the Droid just because that specific salesperson was dishonest.
