Tom's hardware on defective 20"/24" displays

What weeks are the iMacs?

(okay, feel free to slap me...)

I will check our church one when I get a chance. The 20" I didn't notice but I didn't look for it. We're just doing basic iMovie and FCE on it anyways...

Looks like an LCD coating problem that plagued the iPod Touch and still plagues the iPhone...

I just ordered the 20" iMac. I guess this is the first thing I'll check out.

they fixed a memory latency issue between two hardware manufacturers with a firmware... what did you expect them to do?

It's not a defective product, it was a latency issue between two different memory manufacturers.

I would have expected them to acknowledge the problem in public (which they didn't) and provide those who were affected full support and understanding (which they didn't).

It was defective in that the machines were not fit for purpose as they were barely usable. To the consumer the underlying cause is not material, its the manifestation that causes the problem.
 
I have a 20" imac with the color problem,how easy is it to take a it back to a apple store if i bought it online @apple.com?
 
It's really too bad this problem exists in the first place, but I'm thankful I got a good one on the first try. If otherwise, I probably wouldn't be saying to myself right now that I would buy another Mac in the future.
 
I laughed when I read their article claiming that Apple was "iPhoning" their customers because "people who bought Macs in August or September were expecting free upgrades to Leopard". Reaching, to say the least. Tom's is rarely positive about Apple.

Tom's is highly biased to a lot of things in the computer hardware field, that's why I haven't been to the site in many years except now that has been broken by me clicking that link. Doh!

Well, considering the site reviews computer hardware and various upgrades, the Apple platform is not friendly to their business model. In fact, their site would become rather boring quickly if that was all they have to write about:

"Today we look at upgrade options for your older G5 and Intel iMac... Add more RAM or buy a new one! Hmmm, well - that about wraps it up! See us again next week when we discuss video card upgrades for the Mac Mini"

Still, all I have seen from the press since Leopard's release is a string of articles crapping the new O.S. Someone looking up Leopard bugs must have stumbled over the long-running Al iMac lockup beyotchfest and had a "Eureka!" moment.
 
That article says nothing.

People say they don't like the displays. Apple doesn't say anything.

The displays aren't faulty, LG Philips have just sold Apple some poor quality panels.

There is a story about a professor who denied the existence of the giraffe. (This was a long time ago!) One day, his students took him to a zoo which had acquired a giraffe recently. Standing in front of the giraffe, the professor exclaimed, 'I don't believe it! There's no such animal!'

In these, and Apple's, forums posters have denied that the freezing issue existed or affected more than a tiny percentage of iMac users. Others have denied, and are denying, the existence of display problems despite the availability of photos that demonstrate the fault. One poster even denied that the displays were faulty but wrote that Apple had been sold a lot of defective units!

There is no denying that some sites are 'anti-Apple' but that label should not be applied to justified criticism. It is a poor product that can't stand criticism! Justified and balanced criticism usually leads to better products and fairer treatment of users. Would-be 'switchers' are likely to be put off by posters who maintain that Apple is always right regardless of evidence to the contrary. No manufacturer is without fault; vigilant reviewers and users help to keep them on their toes.

Wrong. The panels are the highest quality S-IPS panels, it's the backlighting in SOME iMacs that is defective, please do your research. I'm not arguing this because I'm right. As for the 20" LG and Apple clearly discussed the plan of going with a cheaper TN panel to save costs, also no arguing. TN panels are NOT uncommon, they are all over the computer scene to cut costs and as for offering cheap displays for people on a budget, they do so just fine.
 
There are always SOME defective products with any piece of electrical equipment.

Some? I doubt that. I received a replacement unit W47 just yesterday and it has the same yellow tint and gradient that the W44 unit showed previously.
All 24in iMacs that are on display in town have the same problem. It´s not some unless, of course, Apple reserved the nicotine screens for the smokers here in Germany. I would doubt that, however.

I don't mind people getting hot under the collar and banding about accusations of stupidity, but Ceres above might be a little miffed after debunking your frantic first post.

No kidding I've seen better displays on gas pumps. Apple should be ashamed of the new iJunk especially after the really really nice white C@D 24". Hopefully they'll see the error of their ways and update the line. Their displays have been slowly going downhill for years. ACD's are just barely acceptable they seem to have ceded the display segment to Eizo, the displays of which are nothing short of spectacular. We'll see what the new Pro Launch has to offer can't wait for a "glossy ACD"
 
Wow after watching the youtube video linked to in that article, I've really gone off the idea of ordering a new iMac tomorrow! Please tell me the 24" screen is nothing like the 20" one shown in that video, as that is unbearably bad. :mad:
