Even on the lowest brightness, it is too bright for night time viewing. Just plain hurts my eyes. Compared to the ipod/iphone, this thing is a lot brighter on its lowest setting.

It is commonly known that low brightness is better for night viewing. This is a lot like where they jack up the brightness on monitors and TV's for that showroom appeal, but its not good for normal viewing. Bad job Apple.

Agree and i dont know why ibooks has a stetting to go even lower brightness , instead of just making the whole system go lower brightness..

When reading comics at night its way to bright in the lowest contrast. not only that it would save much more battery if you could put it at even a lower brightness. I dont know if developers have the ips to reduce the brightness but comic and pdf and even the safari browser should have this setting.

It's is way to bright on the lowest setting. I think the same about my MacBook pro. My iPhone is perfect when it comes to getting dark enough.

When I take notes during slide lecture in History of Graphic Design class my iPad is much brighter (at least 2x) than the other student's MBPs around me. Makes me stand out like a sore thumb. Wish it could go lower. I should take a picture of my MBP, iPad, and iPhone together on lowest brightness, but I'm too lazy right now.

I am lying in bed...it is a bit bright...that's not the problem. My WIFE says it's too bright. I am not going to be able to use the iPad except to read books if I don't figure some thing out.

I have a touch on on my clock radio that I used perfectly like this...best part about SB...changing brightness when the lights went out.

WTH...why does iBooks work???
