Top 5 Phones of 2013

Hey guys since 2013 has wrapped up I think I should tell you my personal top 5 phones of 2013.

#5: iPhone 5s

Now I'm going to go on record and say that the iPhone 5s is not something I would have put in this list. But after consideration I said it does deserve a spot in this list as #5. Reason why is because its the first phone to have a 64-bit processor and the Touch ID is actually really nice. Other than that there not much to be said of the 5s in my opinion.


#4: Moto X

I think the Moto X really put Motorola back in the spotlight. I really love the idea of having to get your own phone the way YOU want it with the color of your choice. And it receives Android updates pretty quickly and the voice recognition is pretty sweet. Sure it doesn't have the top specs but the experience is priceless and for the price I wouldn't go wrong with a Moto X

#3: Every Google Play Edition Phone

Does it need any explanation? The best of the Galaxy S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia etc. but with STOCK Android. Yes it is pricey but at least you aren't locked in for 2-years in a contract.

#2: LG G2

Im sure someone saw this coming. The LG G2 is an amazing phone from what I've experienced and seen. The display and camera are really the highlight of this phone and also its touch button on the back. I believe this phone is just amazing and it really gave competition to the HTC One and Galaxy S4.

#1: Nexus 5

Google's Nexus 5 was a really anticipated phone and it did not disappoint in 2013. The highlight of this phone really wasn't the hardware, camera, or even software, it was the price. For $369 for a 16GB and $399 for 32GB off-contract this phone was really made for the Nexus lover. The phone fits nicely in your hand, the display is beautiful, the camera is not the best but it is good enough to take photos on a day to day basis. Rocking Android 4.4 KitKat it is a really sweet phone and for the price is a killer phone.

I would say a toss up between the Moto X, iPhone 5S, HTC One, and Note 3 depending on your preferences. This has been a really good year for high quality smart phones, and you really can't go wrong owning any of those.

Purely based on my own opinion and preferences:

1) Moto X

2) HTC One

3) iPhone 5s

4) Nexus 5

5) Note III

The Moto X stepped out of the usual Android 'box' buy forgoing the usual recipe of pure specs and horsepower for a stripped down yet optimized experience that still rivals other flagships. IMO, Motorola's move in this direction could be a game changer if other OEMs can follow suit, at least to some degree.

The S4 and Note 3 don't deserve to be in the top 5, due to poor build quality and Touchwiz UI, IMO.

I still think the iPhone 5S secures the top position, despite the fact that it's only an incremental update. iOS 7 is great, it revitalizes the stale-looking operating system and adds worthy new improvements. The hardware is great, and the A7 + M7 chip makes a great combination of processing power together with future-proofing. Camera is fantastic as well, though not as great as the Lumia 1020 or android phones like the G2. Apps collection is also solid, combined with a concrete ecosystem that works seamlessly together. (well, most of the time...)

GALAXY NOTE 3 is a no-brainer, top android smartphone in 2013 IMO, would be interesting to see how Samsung improves on this this year. The rest are pretty self-explanatory. I left out the Moto X as it was not available in my country.

It did the most important thing in a phone right: a big battery.

You think anyone would put the Droid Razr Maxx first because of the battery? Battery is only a part off the equation. Putting buttons on the back of the phone was simply a bad idea and why so many people have complained about the G2. It won't win any points for having a bad design flaw.

2013 was a fantastic year for smartphones and Android/iOS and WP as a whole and it seems kind of unfair to only limit this list to 5 units but here are my choices and reasons below:

For me:

5. Nokia Lumia 520/521

Great budget phone that hit a sweet price point when it launched and amazingly went lower. The first big Windows Phone success and drove Windows Phone 8 into relevancy. The highly polished OS runs on internals that would make an average Android phone crawl. Brilliant entry level phone with some great services from Nokia (Here Maps, Nokia Music).

4. Samsung Galaxy Note III.

People laughed at the huge size of the original Note. They laughed again at the Note II. For a company that is constantly scrutinised for their lack of originality, Samsung sure did carve a new category with the Note series and the Note III is better than all the rest in every. Despite its size, fits in perfectly with some smartphone users lives and uses the pressure sensitive pen in clever ways.

3. Motorola Moto G

Really pushed the limits of what a low-end Android phone should be. Very capable hardware with few weaknesses for a low price. Swift updates from Motorola for some too pushes it head and shoulders above other phones in the same price bracket.

2. Apple iPhone 5s

Yes, it's an "S" release from Apple but they really did show the rest of the smartphone world that quad or octa cores are not needed in smartphones for a smooth expetience. Couple amazing performance, great app-store, superb camera optics with a highly optimised mobile OS and you have one of the best phones launched in 2013.

1. Motorola Moto X.

Optimisation mentioned above, makes the iPhone and Lumia perform well considering the "low" specs on paper when compared to other high-end offerings. The Moto G also delivered great performance with lesser phones at the time (HTC One, Galaxy S 4) and managed to take advantage of custom silicon to add some real clever features (always on listening, active notifications). Motorola even de-coupled system applications from the firmware and updated internal features via the Google Play store enabling all Moto X users to get the best of what was updated without having to wait for a carrier to get their grubby mitts on the firmware. It's also one of the most customisable phones with Moto Maker. I like where they've headed with the X.

Honourable mentions should be made for the HTC One, Lumia 1020, LG G2 & Xperia Z/Z Ultra as they were also some fantastic devices released during the year.

Choice had never been so good IMO, lets hope 2014 is just as good!
