Although I have had little experience with some of these, 3 of them I have, I will throw my hat in the ring.

Not in order of merit;

Nexus 4 (I enjoyed owning this the best last year)
Nexus 5 (I have just got this today)
HTC One
iPhone 5S
Samsung Galaxy S4 (This ran the Nexus 4 very close for being the most enjoyed)

I could go on, last year was a very good year. :)

I dunno, somewhere in West Texas
My list would go

5. Moto X - A nice device that came into its own without the boast of specs and nice touch on the always listening feature.

4. Galaxy S4 - Heavyweight high end device that came out with all the punches. A bevy of features that left nothing to be desired.

3. Nexus 5 - Pure stock android at its finest with the best price point in the market. A nice upgrade to the 4.

2. iPhone 5s - A solid upgrade to the 5 that offered increased battery performance, 64 bit computing and near flawless iOS 7 experience

1. Note 3 - The defacto best phone of the year, every imaginable feature set check listed. Awesome s-pen functionality, Top specs, top performance, all wrapped up in a gorgeous display that can pass for a phone, tablet and even your computer.
