I guess ill start, but feel free to chime in with your opinions and/or Top 5 Lists

1. App store
2. Ease of Use
3. Marketing
4. Overall User experience is superior
5. 2010 iPhone 4g and OS4.0 are gonna be game changers.

Reasons Mentioned by other users:

- iTunes integration
- "Apple Factor"/Coolness
- Ease of Use
- Functional GUI
 
I'm not sure marketing is going to have as much to do with it, especially because Verizon is doing a good job with marketing. iTunes integration and the "Apple Factor" are candidates.
 
I agree with the marketing. I can't tell you how many freakin times I've seen my friends (all in their early 20s) see an App commercial and then turn to me telling me to get that app because it looks so cool and fun. Never seen that happen with a Droid commercial.

Apple just knows what they're doing. That's why they only have 9% of the market share but half the revenue (for desktops and notebooks)... they're geniuses at that company.

I think all those reasons are valid. Yes, User Experience is a subjective measurement, but one that can be measured nonetheless. IMHO, even if the iphone were just a phone with no apps (and less wide as a result), it would be a well designed and beautiful phone.

I agree, that is why I am not bothering to look at the specs of any other phone until June 2010.
 
How would one go about measuring the amount of asskicking the iPhone is doing to droid ?

Would it be cellphone market share ?
Percentage of internet usage by device ?

anyone know the current state of either of these measures ? and any trends in growth over the past year ?

I think that Apple is gonna have to open up to more carriers if it wants to stay ontop of android, which I am convinced will happen this summer.

Those are rather simplistic points which lack any real substance.

What is so significant about the App Store? The number of apps? How you install them? How you browse them? What apps are allowed on the store?

How is the iPhone easier to use than an Android device? When setting it up? Making Calls? Browsing the web? Music?

I'll leave the marketing because it's a bit of a complex issue given the differences between the US and the UK (i.e. we have several networks advertising the iPhone now)

How is the user experience better? Is this just a rehash of point two?

What do you think iPhone OS 4 and the next iPhone device will do that will be "game changing"?

It's not just the number of apps, it's that most of the brain-power in developing new apps is going to the iPhone right now. Many of the major (non-game) apps are available for both platforms, but a lot of the really unique apps that make using an iPhone special aren't available for Android.

I just helped a co-worker and good friend make the choice between these two phones. For a variety of reasons he went for the Droid, but he acknowledges the many ways in which using it are not as easy as the iphone. A few examples:
- when browsing the web, it is hard to zoom as precisely as you can with the iphone. Yes, you can install Dolphin browser, but it's pinch to zoom is way too sensitive, and it's not a great browser otherwise. Furthermore, pinch to zoom works in so many other apps than the browser.
-If you accidentally click a link, it's easy on the iphone to slightly move your finger to de-select. On the droid you are stuck opening that link then going back.
-The iphone also seems to accurately click on small links much better than the droid.
-same with placing the cursor accurately in a line of text. Many reviewers have even acknowledged that the work around is to just delete then re-type on the droid.
-in general, it's not an uncommon occurrence to get to a point in Droid where you can't do what you want, and the only option is to use the Home or Back button, which takes you further away from what you were trying to do than you'd like.
-While setting up his Exchange account for him, the first time through, after entering all account info, it wouldn't accept my attempts to press Next to finish the process. I had to exit the app, start over, then it worked.
-Trying to look at a couple of jpg attachments (less than 100k) caused it to hang at downloading attachment with no success. To do anything else, you had to use the back button, select a different message, then come back to the original message.
-when he first went to show it to me this morning, it was dead, and the only way it would turn on was to remove the battery. He wasn't so amused with the reminders this gave him of the first days with his xv6700 (that many of us had) which would have such behavior 6-7 times per day as shipped from Verizon. I've NEVER had such an occurrence with my own, nor with the many other iPhones I support.
-Music - tons of people (including my co-worker) are invested in the Itunes music store because it's really convenient. He's considering buying a Touch to supplement the Droid. I'M the one trying to talk him out of this move.

Honestly, with a better screen, and some level of multi-tasking, Apple will be pretty well set. I really like the Droid (other than the physical hardware) and I could live with it easily, and enjoy the benefits it has over the iphone. Most non-technical users will still be put off by it because it (like Windows before it) still has too many quirks. There are millions of people like my wife who wanted nothing to do with a smart phone until the iphone came along. Like her, they aren't going to want to hear about anything but the iphone for a long, long time.

LMAO :D Good points, I like this post. This ease of use thing is an Apple mantra you will hear to at least December 2012, unless there is App to stop that.
 
i just wish apple would ditch AT&T. I bought an ipod touch for my main form of communication (i make calls with skype) instead of the iphone. AT&T was a major factor in my decision. Competition would reduce prices and improve customer service.
 
Here's my reasons for me:

#1 - Simplify Media - Not available on any other platform, and the developers say they have zero plans of doing so.

#2 - Touch screen interface - Accuracy, typing (for me I can hit 40-50wpm on a good day!!), and pinch/swipe guestures just can't be beat

#3 - Web browser - Pinch to zoom especially awesome, but the way pages are rendered are just amazing - AND the best part is that many sites now have an iphone version with iphone looking buttons and controls.

#4 - Best in class Exchange integration - only the Blackberry does a better job. I can look up contacts from the GAL. I couldn't do that on the DROID. Also remote wipe - not possible on the droid (yet!).

#5 - Ecosystem ... That's kind of subjective, but I already have a ton of chargers and accessories that work across all my apple ipod, iphone, etc devices

#6 - Vibrate switch - yeah, such a simple thing that makes life so much easier especially when you go to a movie or a meeting and realize you forgot to silence your phone. ;)

As for the droid.. What rocks

-Facebook Integration - I'm sure Apple will do this soon - it only makes sense
-Task Manager/Notifications - This is the best thing about the droid - sorry Apple you need to get with the program
-Sound quality - superior on the droid, I have Mark Levinson audio in my car, and on streaming stations (the same ones I listen to on my iphone) the bass is depeer, and the highs clearer - and even the built in speaker sounds better then the one on the iphone
-Widgets - Come on Apple - give us the ability to have a button right on our home screen to turn off wifi or 3g without having to jailbreak our phones.
-Micro SD Card - Easy to copy all your favorite music and just rock out - NO messing with itunes, syncing, being tied down to one computer
-Turn by Turn GPS - never tried it when I had my demo unit from Verizon, but it looked cool, nice to not have to pay $70 bucks for another app.
-Google Voice - come on Apple, get with the program... ;) Oh wait, maybe you need to tell AT&T to F**K off! :)
-SNOOZE button for Alarms - COME ON APPLE!!!

Good post/at least you show some pros and cons.
I like the MicroSD point, however on these boards people are iTunes centric. My music comes from a variety of sources, and I have been porting from device to device for 5 years without a problem.

One other thing on widgets, to me the iphone interface is a bunch of widgets.

I'm with you.. I would totally get an iPhone if it was on another network. All my friends always say "I love the iPhone, except for the phone part". I ended up getting an iPodTouch and carry that alongside my cell phone.

With that said, until someone, android or otherwise figures out a way to deliver apps to users as easy as the app store, I think its gonna be hard to take down the iPhone.
 
Android phones are to the iPhone what Windows on a laptop is to a MacBook Pro.

The Android is made for no specific model, and it's really up to the phone manufacturer to decide how good they want the phone to be.

Where as the iPhone OS is made specifically for the iPhone hardware.


You can just feel the quality difference right off the bat, from the hardware to how smooth the OS runs, it's responsiveness to your touch, etc.
 
There will not be a 4G iPhone in 2010. Where are all of these 4G nodes going to pop up in the next six months? AT&T has been working like hell on its 3G network. The Sprint/Clear network is in FOUR CITIES last I heard. Why would you create a mass market device for such a limited network?
 
I thik they mean 4G as in 4th generation iphone not the Network data/voice feature.
Really really doubt AT&T would even start rolling out LTE within 6 months. I'll be happy with 7.2MB 3G for 2010.

1. Android has an app store. In this app store, one of the highest paid apps isn't "idiot test"
2. Android is pretty damn easy to use, have you tried it?
3. "Droid Does"
4. The Android has an equally superior experience.
5. Do you really think the iPhone will be the only 4G device? Or did you mean 4th generation?

iTunes integration is like a negative feature, but that's personal preference.
"Apple Factor" just shows how much of a tool you are.

The Android UI is more functional than the iPhone, considering you can actually change the themes on the Android phone, unlike the iPhone. Oh and the pull down notification bar on the Android is the single best feature I've ever seen in a phone.

I don't have, nor have I ever owned an Android device, I'm just saying.

I should clarify. I am referring to the calendar alarms that remind you of an appointment. They pop up just like a text message. Unlike texts, they don't continue beeping until you unlock your phone... And once you unlock the phone, it will not remind you again... Almost every other smart phone including the blackberry and the droid have a snooze option when a calendar event comes up... but i guess since the iphone can't multi task, they weren't able to give us this option.
