You could say that it's more economical to just get a dual processor Mac Pro then to buy a dual processor tray, but it's not rare. Very sough after, but not rare.
Getting ready to pull the trigger for the X5690, can someone please tell me which one ?, meaning model number wise ?, MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR GUIDANCE

There is only one version of X5690 unless you buy the engineering sample.

In my opinion, clean installs on macOS are overrated.

I went from MacPro1,1 to MacPro3,1 to MacPro5,1 to hackintosh to second hackintosh and never did a clean install. I just transplanted or cloned my system drives each time I upgraded machines.

Same here, unless the OS really broken. Make a clean one may provide little to no advantage, but just cost more time to setup the whole thing again.

Since I'm a sysadmin, for my Mac I totally HATE upgrades and I never do any. I like tight, small macOS installations with only what I really need. If I can automate my installs, even better.

I like to upgrade macOS as soon as new versions are released. I have a fair amount of faith in Apple that major bugs are ironed out during beta periods.

I think it's more important to be careful with app "installers". Pay attention to what they are installing in to System and/or Library, particularly kexts and launch daemons.

Thanks all for the advice.
h9826790, thanks too for the PCU info. Sounds crazy, but if I may ask. One mentioned small tight OS, I would like to remove as many app on my mac as I can that won't hurt the system in any way. Is there a utility that can accomplish this ?

Reason is, is that I strictly use my mac for my recording studio work, and I do nothing else on it. I have PC's for other duties. THANKS.

Thank you all so much, waiting on an X5690 from ebay the 21st. I already updated the firmware, which was 4,1, and now shows 5,1.

Someday I'll take the plunge for the 2018, but for now it does everything I need, and not ready to shell out more money to go 64bit AAX. Although on gearslutz they recommend PT 10.3.3. That is the farthest you can go before you have to switch to AAX.

MERRY XMAS ALL

Did the upgrade on the 2010 CPU x5690, but not sure if it's still outperforming my 2008, since it doesn't really show me the two processors combined number ?

I'm not sure if geekbench put the 92) processors are put in account ?

Geekbench isn't the best way to determine performance, especially on this forum. However, even the 4-core model (2009 or greater) will completely outperform the 8-core model from 2008.

There were a lot of changes from the 2008 to 2009 (and 2010-2012 models) that will eclipse the older variants. For instance, here are my Geekbench scores between my 2008 3.40 4 core model and my 2009 (flashes to 5,1) 2.66ghz 4-core model:

Mac Pro 3,1 (3.4ghz 4-core model):

https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/8075246

Mac Pro 4,1 (2.66ghz 4-core model):

https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/10150710

I wish I had tested my 2008 in other benchmarking tests... but all's I did is Geekbench, so that's all I have to go on.

Thanks for chiming in, I see your test shows the multi cores, why on mine it didn't ?. my 2008 has (2) CPU's, and my other 2010 only has (1) CPU. Was hoping to get a reading on both CPU scores like yours on my 2008. Although your right about the 2010 being a lot faster.

Also I see you have the Samsung EVO, I heard that you have to get the AHCI version for the MAC ?

You are using GeekBench v2 in 32-bit. Upgrade to v4 and run in 64-bit to compare 1:1.
ANdreeOnline, THANKS.

Problem is that the v4 requires 10

Yeah I was going to purchase the old version of geekbench 2, but they actually want more money for the older version (DUH). So I did Cinebench for free, and here are the results.
