If you are comparing screens you should always check and see how videos look. I've always done this test with MacBooks and iMacs - visit an Apple store and play a few movies and youtube clips that are high res. There you will see the difference. Which is what KitnB is pointing too. With the iPad Pro I played a few youtube videos from those who shoot in high resolution like Marques because there is a lot of color tones
and Casey because his shooting is very cinematic (city landscapes)

I tried looking at the 9.7 iPad pro but most of the stores hadn't updated them. I didn't see any at my Apple Store. But I love the 4 speakers setup. If you are playing games and streaming movies the 10.5 iPad Pro has the faster processor for that. Movies are uber sharp. Having played games on an Air 2 and iPad Pro..the Pro was faster in loading and multitasking. If you're a budget and want a faster iPad, go with the 2017 iPad or 9.7 iPad Pro.

I keep my air2 as long as it lasts.. the screen of the ipad 2017 feels hollow when tapping, looks like being ”inside” and reflects light so much that you always need to find the right angle to watch it. The quality feels cheap overall.

If you’re comparing screen quality, it’s already likely the 2017 iPad is not for you. The 2017 iPad was made as an option for people who just want an inexpensive iPad that works and who don’t care about details like the best screen quality. The pro models are made for people who do care. The air 2 was also made for people who care but over 3 years ago, which is why it’s so cheap now. Based on history, it will receive iOS updates for only about two more years (if it doesn’t slow down before then). It also doesn’t support ARkit apps which I believe are going to become big in the next couple years. For these reasons I personally wouldn’t consider it an option for purchase. But that’s up to you of course. In my opinion, if you aren’t able to disregard the screen, you should buy the cheapest pro model you can find.

It stinks when no device is ideal and you have to choose what to sacrifice. I’ve been there with the iPhone.

The 5th gen Retina display is excellent and this model does practically everything the Pro does except have pencil drawing capability. The build quilty is superb and runs IOS 11 very well with excellent performance. If someone wants to spend $1000 for essentially the same thing, that’s their decision.

There is nothing really contradictory in our respective statements.

You're actually right. I revised my comments. The 5th gen is very good for almost all needs. I’d only quibble a bit about screen quality. To me, the 5th gen was very close, but that might be just me. The Pro will also have a little better longevity with the A10X processor. But you make a good point.

I owned the Air 1 and Air 2 and I didn't mind the gap between the screen. It's still a fantastic screen regardless. I would just go for the new model.

Problem is the gap on the new on is much worse than Air 1 or 2.

I thought it was exactly the same as the Air 1?
We have all three in the household. Yep, air gap is the same (at least based on eyeballing) on both Air 1 and 2017 iPad. Air 2 is the first to get fully laminated display.

Mind, the anti-reflective coating on the Air 2 and Pro seem to greatly reduce the effectiveness of the oleophobic coating so it seems like one is just trading reflections for oily haze.
