Everybody seems to think that 24/30 fps is the magic number for running games smoothly. That would be true, if computer games were pre-rendered movies that already have motion blur factored into them. Movies use motion blur so that 24/30 fps seems fluent to the human eye. Since computer games are rendered on the fly, they need around 72fps to be completely fluid. Experiments have said the human eye can detect movement up to 72fps, but nothing higher. So ideally every game would want 72fps to run smooth (even more to serve as a buffer for those few scenes that drop your fps)

That doesn't mean games have to be 72fps though, I personally see games as fluid when they're in the 15-20 range, but I prefer my games to be in the 30-40 range at minimum, so they have adequate buffer as to never go below 20.
