Toshiba shows off world's thinnest laptop

So they haven't shipped yet. Nobody's tested any of the claims.

Maybe they heard Apple will be SHIPPING new notebooks next week and decided to ANNOUNCE something riding on Apple's coattails.

Wake me when they're in the wild.

Christ thats one hell of an elitist statement, Mac OSX can easily be replicated onto other machines, and considering the airs flaws, I'd say this machine will wipe the floor with the air...

The processor in the Tosh is only 1.2Ghz - that's a very slow processor to be running Vista on. Personally I find my Air flawless so I don't really know where you're coming from with this statement

The 1.6 GHz cpu is great for marketing purposes, but due to the heat in the MBA, the cpu has to be scaled down to run at 1.2 GHz most of the time. The Toshiba is probably just as fast in real-world use, despite the numbers you see on the spec sheet.

Anyway, from what I hear, the R500 wasn't very well built, so bleh! Sure, it was just 0.2" thicker than the MBA or something (i.e. nearly the same) and still had a DVD burner, but the TZ and Lenovo X series were supposedly built far better (but lacked the optical drive).

The only thing with the new Sony TT, which has an optical drive (even a Blu-Ray option), is that nobody has heard much about its battery life, and it isn't being advertised. I expect it to be crap.


Anyway, the MBA is useful enough for most people, and beautiful as well. I just wish Apple surprises everyone and introduces a 12" version soon, because with the new thin aluminium MacBooks on the horizon for far less than the MBA, there won't be much incentive to buy a 13.3" MBA anymore when the MacBooks appear to be thinner than 1" as well, and will have an optical drive.

Thickness measurements:

Portege 600 --> 19.5 - 25.5 mm

MacBook Air --> 4.0 - 19.4 mm

What am I missing?

i noticed that too....what was OP thinking - world's thinnest laptop - i think thats a mistake.

Toshiba site say "the world’s lightest, fully-featured laptop" - i think thats more correct.

Asus S101- not worth it

Low specs, theyve just made it thinner then their other Eee pc. Double the price only coz thinner. With that price you can get core 2 duo. So not worth it.

Anyway i just wanted to see everyone opion.

I love the Macbook Air.

Everyone has the feeling they will do some kind of upgrade on the Macbook Air if not next week, then soon.

Im hoping to get it.

Bumo up in speed, and lower in price. With longer battery, no fan problems, bigger SSD highdrive and low cost.

Lol Obviously you've never used a Toshiba. A few years back they were pretty decent. They are horrible now.

In the picture this laptop does not look all that thin to me. But then I have never seen an air in real life so I can't compare.

Please show me the statistics. I am extremely sceptical about this given the volume Apple is selling now versus the volume Apple was selling in 2003.


I imagine the number one selling Apple Laptop of all time is probably the white MacBook.

I was talking at the time. Now the macbook trumps it. Probably due its small design compared to the 15/17" models.

When i worked in IT the number one complaint about the 15/17" powerbooks was the size and weight. People with 12" laptops wouldn't give them up for anything.

If Apple released a 12" or similar size macbook pro it would take over sales i believe.

Is the battery user-replacable? Because if it is, almost every company puts the time you can get by swapping it in specification. Of course they also put the weight with lightest possible configuration in the same specification.

No it wouldn't.

Maybe it wouldn't, but that's not so certain.
The 12" was a machine to fall in love with, the current MB not so much.
The only thing wrong with the 12" was not the form factor but the fact that the guts weren't updated.

Meaning 5 ~ 5.5. Crap I'm sure for a Windows notebook - whereas a 3.5 life is fantastic on a Mac, especially if the Apple-addled apparently feel the need to lie on a regular basis about getting 6....

Worlds thinnest this is not, but then again it has a DVD burner and better battery amongst other things. It's also very tough, you can flex the screen all you want..

And as for 9 hours.. I believe it. I have an ASUS EEE 1000H that gets 7 hours with WiFi and Bluetooth off and the battery is probably better in this.
