You can cut & paste in Finder, but the paste is called "Move item here", cmd-alt-v. So you need to copy (cmd-c) and move (cmd-alt-v).

Still not ergonomic, cmd+x and then cmd+v is the RIGHT way to go. However, there is a workaround to this;

BetterTouchTool:

Make a new trigger for Finder;
cmd+x = cmd+c
cmd+v = cmd+opt/alt+v

Works, but what's too bad is that the file in question then doesn't fade out slightly which tells you:
a) you successfully cut the file(s)
b) shows you which files are to be copied in question which is nice to see if you paste later if you move other files around first.

I wonder if you could make a sound play during this as a confirmation that you've prepared the files to be cut.

My god though, Apple really is the most ass-backwards company when it comes to such simple stuff... just like their moronic obsession with single button mouses.

Well it's called copy & move. There is not cut, so no need to show a weird "cut" state. If you want to know what you copied you open the clipboard window in Finder.
