I'm seeing a lot of mixed reviews about Face ID compared to Touch ID and a lot of people saying they prefer Touch ID. I am curious to why?

From past devices Touch ID was far from perfect for me. Most of the time it wouldn't work and thats with 4 fingerprints set up 2 on each thumb. This is just my personal opinion and my opinion before I even knew about Face ID coming out.

You touch more with your hands than you do with your face which can affect the Touch ID ability

Have people forgotten how often it would fail for them or did Touch ID barely ever fail for you?

As for security though I think Touch ID is more secure but thats just my personal opinion.

My question is How reliable was TouchID for you? and also do you find FaceID more reliable?

I would say the majority seem to like touch ID because you don't have to have your phone at a certain angle or held to your face in order to unlock your phone. Touch ID was something that you didn't even have to consciously think about to unlock your phone and that's what many appreciated over the years using it. Already wasn't perfect and it still isn't, but it matured nicely over the years, and is become very reliable.

Face ID is not without its imperfections either, but I do like the concept behind it and I think it's still in the early stages of maturing in the sense of security and unlocking someone's iPhone more accurately.

Yeah I agree about it being easier. But I think in the end it wasn't as easy as I would of liked it to be as I was constantly putting my pin in

Using touch ID, I rarely had to use my pin. My fingerprint was read 99% of the time without issue. Even with Face ID, it still requires to have a pin for a back up, which doesn't work all the time either. So both security methods are not perfect, but Touch ID was refined more over the years, where Face ID is still in its infancy.

So you barely ever had to enter your pin then? I was constantly putting mine in. If I had anything on my hands or if I was out and cold it wouldn't work. If I was sweating it wouldn't work. Water it wouldn't work but thats obvious that one. Etc

Yep completely agree with @Relentless Power. Touch ID works flawlessly for me. In fact I didn’t get the X this year because I didn’t wanna be the early adopter and deal with the issues that come with any first generation product.

First, touch ID reacts differently to everybody's fingerprint. But I never had issues with it for 99% of the time that I use it. Yes, there were occasions where I did have to enter my pin, but it was rarely ever a problem for me. Again, both technologies are not perfect, but touch ID itself evolved nicely over the years where it became more reliable.

What phone/phones was you using with TouchID?

I’m with you on the hit or miss of touchid. Even 2nd gen. I have 5 scans of two fingers to decrease failed attempts. I’m a mechanic so my hands can be in rough shape which I’m sure is a major factor. Faceid might offer a more reliable way to me unlock a phone. I’m game for the change

I have used every iPhone that has incorporated Touch ID.

I did find the SE quite a bit more reliable than the 7 but maybe my 7 was a defected device

Yeah thats why I think in the future FaceID will become more reliable than TouchID because you're not constantly putting stuff on your face depending whether on the event or job or etc

This is exactly what I was saying in a previous post. Everybody's fingerprint will react differently to touch ID, because the condition of everyone's finger print is vastly different and exposed to different elements. No one will have the same accuracy when unlocking touch ID depending on their overall fingerprint.

You mentioned your fingerprint is in rough shape because you're a mechanic, which has been troublesome for you with touch ID. As for someone like myself, I have not had any complications unlocking my iPhone primarily throughout various iPhone models. It just goes to show you everybody will have different experiences.

I miss Touch ID and would go back to in a heartbeat if I wasnt materialistic

FaceID is definitely slower and here's my experiences:

- Every other time i go to unlock my homescreen is replaced with the "FACEID" text while i wait for it to unlock.
- With the device flat on a table no gesture will wake the phone - I resort to tapping it forcefully - and then naturally peering over the top of it to get my face alligned
- No matter what i read to tell me to register faceid from my waist, it won't unlock without me tilting the screen to my face or pulling it closer...this is with the Attention option turned off

TouchID was faster and more convenient for me.

Im quite disappointed

I have used Touch ID since iPhone 5s and still use it on my iPad pro. I love it. Initially did not work to well and I have seen lot of people activating Siri while using it. But the second generation was good and fast. It would work most times, apart from fingers wet.
Now that being said, I am loving Face ID much more. With the Face ID you just forget that it is there, it scans your face as you swipe up and bang.... you in the home screen. Also love it how it works seamless due to it being deep integrated in the iOS. For example, before I had to scan a finger while opening a secure app, now you just get in without doing anything. For me, while Touch ID may have been tad bit faster, I find Face ID much more convenient.

Yep completely agree with @Relentless Power. Touch ID works flawlessly for me. In fact I didn’t get the X this year because I didn’t wanna be the early adopter and deal with the issues that come with any first generation product.

Most people I have seen on a favour of Touch ID are the ones that don't own an iPhone X.

There are no issues with Face ID other than people being used to having the phone on their desk and unlocking at arms reach to swipe through stuff first before picking it up. Sure, it now means that you need to angle your phone to glance before you use it, but that's not the fault of Face ID, and if all future iPhones are to adopt this, you'll either need to accept that, stick with your old phone or move to Android.

Touch ID for me was not perfect, but good enough. There are the odd times when I miss the button, but not enough to make me want to go back. It's like when I swapped my manual car for one with a DSG. There are times when I miss the manual, but nowhere near enough to outweigh the convenience and benefits of a good DSG box.

As for security though I think Touch ID is more secure but thats just my personal opinion.
Apple suggest otherwise, quite clearly. Besides, for me, these measures are only to stop people casually picking up my phone and using it. If they want my phone and data so badly, they'll get it anyway so it's just not a big deal either way.

I didn't have many issues with Touch ID and very rarely would it fail and if it did fail, I would just use a different finger to authenticate. However having said that, now that I've used Face ID for over a week, I think I prefer Face ID over Touch ID and it seems to be getting better and the angles that it can authenticate my face are getting greater too. Now it's just become second nature to 'Swipe Up to Unlock' and I don't even think about Face ID authenticating my face, it just feels like I don't actually have any sort of 'lock' on the phone. Also it's only going to get better with time.

Exactly. Perfectly said. Once you get used to Face ID, it’s something where you don’t have to think about it. You just use your phone and everything happens seamlessly.

I also love how notification previews aren’t visible to anyone unless you’re looking at your phone. That would be impossible with Touch ID.

You can do the previews with the TouchID though, obviously it doesn't turn on when you look at it but if you unlock the phone with TouchID then you can see the messages

I tried face ID in a store so my experience is based on a 5-minute test, but here are my reasons why I prefer touch ID over the current ipX face ID:

- Touch ID never fails for me, except I have wet hands. If I have wet hands, I don't touch my phone. It's waterproof, but I still keep any liquids away from it.
- You can't lounge around like on a couch with your phone next to you and unlock your phone without moving it towards your face. That sucks. Sometimes I just want to unlock it to check news or messages without having to move myself or the device. Touch ID works better here.
- Touch ID is faster. Maneuvering my face to the correct loaction in order to unlock the phone just can't be faster than placing the thumb or finger on it while taking it up from the desk or out of my pocket. It's already unlocked as soon as I see the screen. Without swiping up.

In the end, I can only speak for my use case. Maybe I would get used to face ID if I don't have another option. But as long as the 7 plus offers everything I need, there is no chance I would switch to an X due to lack of better features.

What does this have to do with anything?

Of course it does. Apple should put all byometric security techs in their iPhones (Touc ID, Face ID, Iris Scanner, Voice Recognition, signature recognition, and what not) and let their dear customers choose whichever one of them they want to use......

So many discussions on the good and bad of Face ID and finger ID and it is for nothing as Apple has made up it mind on which to use in the future. Might as well embrace it as finger ID is toast.

Not going to happen.
