Better solution

Hello world,

I found a better solution using BetterTouTool.

1- Enable "Activate experimental dragging BUT

2- DO NOT DISABLE DRAGGING FROM YOUR SYSTEM PREFS

On my MBP 13'' (10.6.4) it results in a 100% working trackpad WITHOUT ANY DELAY after drag release.

Thanks, guys. You've helped me fix the biggest annoyance with my new MBA. This should really be configurable in Prefs!

It's been close to two years since the last reply on this thread, and it seems like something must have changed in BetterTouchTool because I've looked all over and I can't find the option that people are talking about (or I'm just missing it). I'm working with version 0.921, which is the latest as of this posting. Are people still able to remove the three finger drag delay with BetterTouchTool? Or is there a different solution?

Edit: I think I found it - you need to click "Advanced" from the upper left, then "Trackpad" on the upper right (the image, not the tab). The option for experimental dragging is at the very bottom of the "General (Tracking Speed Etc.)" tab, in a smaller font than the other options.

The trouble is, it didn't remove my delay - and it made the three-finger behavior even more sensitive, to the point that I was seemingly selecting things event when only using one or two fingers (which may be the intended behavior?). I tried to disable the three-finger drag in the System Preferences, but that just stopped me from being able to use three fingers. Not sure if maybe this fix isn't working anymore...

Probably couldn't say better but here's my 2 cents anyway...

Apple should give us a 'little' more freedom of choice when it comes to REALLY important usability settings such as this one!

Give me some bars to drag around so 'I' decide HOW I wanna use this piece of art... I really love my Mac.. My first after 20 smt years of working with PCs. I love it and I wish to have met earlier.. BUT.. it is also true that Mac is trying to train me to learn to use it the way it wants to be used..

I am totally fine with it.. I'll gobble up everything it throws at me.. All the weird key combinations (like that shift+option+3 or whatever to take a screenshot) and whatnot.. I will learn because I love the experience..

STILL... when it comes to usability.. I expect to be able to fine tune some settings.. like keyboard delays, drag lock durations etc...

Please provide an option for the likes of us.. Immigrants of PC world.. some more.. a little more flexibility... Ty..

Yeah actually it is a 'stupid mac'.

I have the same problem obviously, and have been virtually going insane trying to figure out how to solve it, which based on all evidence there apparently is no solution.

My Macbook Pro was forced on me by my work and I have found several examples of what I'll call: 'Steve Jobs' Way Or The Highway' type of design. This is one good example of that. The Apple philosophy is apparently that they know what's best for the user in all cases. In this case, it's been decided that users need to have some extra time (a full freaking second? who are these slow users? oh wait... never mind) to pick up their finger and keep dragging after a tap-drag. There is no need to make this delay time configurable (like on a typical PC) because.... say it with me kids... "Apple knows best, always"... that's right.

I feel like I have a new religion instead of a new computer, because the typical Mac Addict's response to a PROBLEM (not a feature) such as this is just to swallow more Kool-aid and change the way I use MY computer. I don't get this. Computers are supposed to be a tool to make my life easier, but on the Mac I feel like the computer is somehow training me to use it the way it wants to be used. I resent this.

Some of the comments in this post make me want to bash my face in. I particularly love the one about "no Mac user has ever had this problem in 13 years". How odd, how totally STRANGE then that so many PC users crossing over have this EXACT problem?

You know what I think... I think it's a problem with the PC. Because it couldn't be a problem with the Mac.

Free Temporary Solution

For now, just enable three finger drag in System Preferences-Trackpad, and get use to that. Switching from three-finger to one finger is equal to click-release.
It appears that's once everything is made easy in the high-tech world, the only way to make more money in the future is to create problems. All this computer technology stuff is going to cause us more stress than we ever had; particularly for those trying to make academic or artistic progress.

This is free utility, that release the mouse up immediately after three finger dragging.
http://pravdomil.cz/dragreleasedelay

i know this is old. but this issue is still plaguing me till now. i just don't understand why there is no option to turn this "feature" off.

anyway, i tried that software but it introduces other unwanted problems. for example in illustrator it cause a select without actually selecting and in safari, it makes the search window results transparent and also eliminates the window with recents that pops up when clicking on the search bar.

so does anyone know of another solution? there is no magical terminal command for this?

Looks like that option is completely gone now. Makes me think that Apple couldn't even figure this one out haha, and removed the option instead of spending more engineering time, given that pravdomil's attempt even has bugs, plus the fact that Apple dragging USED to have this functionality no problem...

It's amazing how after all these years, Apple still hasn't provided a statement about this! This is the single most annoying thing about MacOS, having transitioned from a Windows Laptop.

I made an account just to second this. I figured I might need to do something a little non-obvious from the Terminal to fix this, but it is simply bizarre to me that a way to adjust that timing isn't known!

This is my number one issue with macOS.
Using app that require many drag and drop like Adobe is dead slow because of this 1 seconds delay.
Maybe we should create a change.org page just for this?

I've found this solution mentionned earlier in this thread. It has it's own issue you can have an immadiate d&d unless you wait for like 1 or 2 second but I prefer it over the 1 second delay which is like 10 seconds in my brain:
No-Drag-Release-Delay

btw, I made this account just for this "feature"

I give up to one finger double click and drag after more than a decade of use now. I use three finger drag now. It was hard for me to switch but I give it a chance and now it's not that bad.

My advice: give three fingers drag a chance for two weeks.

Best solution is either get used to:
- 3 Finger Drag (no delay if just highlighting text, but big problem if you're dropping)
- Using Drag-Lock and tapping immediately to release faster without the delay. (good luck trying to get used to this)
- Becoming Apple Sheep and using default: click and drag the trackpad. (no delay but no tapping).

It's insane that's still isn't resolved.
Only https://github.com/pravdomil/no-drag-release-delay works. Grab it and use, but here you have to manually set it to autostart
But there's more - if you activate a normal two-tap drag it... adds a delay to a normal tap action ?
It's some unforeseen level of stupidity. It makes it unusable for me as I can't (and don't want to) use tree-finger drag.

I couldn't imagine MacOS has so many stupid drawbacks before I switched. I never new I'll like Windows

Just figured out a fourth option combining your first and second options:
- 3 Finger Drag, release and tapping immediately to release without the delay.

I'm giving it a try. Hope this works for somebody else.

Hi!
I don't use it, but miraculously found it on my drive (Attached File) "No drag release delay.app"
And miraculously I found you!!!. Thank you so much! You are an absolute blessing from God. The experience is still not the same as the windows laptop, not even close tbh to the companies like Dell, MSP or the one I hade, Razer, Those come with Windows precision touchpad, Mostly Perfect and better in some ways. There was use to be a time when windows machines were use to be crap at making touchpads and was use to learn from Apple. And now, the apple is getting behind because of being asswhole ego maniac, stupidly selfish, not listening to their customers even if they had been screaming since years or even since a ****ing decade But thanks a lot to the good people who are working to help Apple users improve their experience, Thank you so much for sharing. Wish you the best ahead for whatever you're up to.

I am new to MacOS and really frustrated with this delay in dropping. I cant play lichess or any quick reflex games because of this 1 second delay. windows is instant, never thought this simple thing would be an issue in a Macbook.
