Hi all,

I've already upgraded to macOS Monterey and meet trouble with trackpad: (I'm using tap to click and on Macbook pro 16inch with intel chip)

- Trackpad sometimes not sensitive.
- Three fingers to lookup or translate sometimes not sensitive.
- Tap to click sometimes not sensitive also.

Anyone meet the same trouble? And how to do fix it?

Thanks!

Seeing this on my 2021 M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch as well. It was okay when the system booted with 12.0 but since updating to 12.0.1 and even with 12.1 betas, it is growing worse. Tap To Click frequently fails.

I purchased a MBA equiped with apple silicon on October 14, 2021. It came preloaded with mac os big sur. I tried force clicking with one finger to get previews without actually going inside the link. A faint preview showed up for only a brief moment and eventually disappeared. Similarly, I tried to look up the meaning of an word by force clicking on it. A dialogue box appeared and then it was gone without showing anything. I changed my preference for data detection and quick look up from force click to three finger tap. It worked on every occasion. Under the guidance of apple support team I performed all possible trouble shooting. I returned it as they suggested and got my replacement. It seemed the same problem was still there. I replaced it again. I received the replacement on 18/11/2021. I have researched about it a bit found an article regarding intended behaviour of haptic feedback.

Dropping a pin on maps, ramping up the fast forwarding in photos app and while playing back a video in quick time player through force clicking by one finger works everytime pressure sensitivity set to medium. Except for this none of features works including quick look up, preview, data detection (note that data detection, look up still works with three finger tap). First, I thought the problem is with haptic feedback, but on the occassions where it worked, I felt the haptic feedback. I have contacted a few who owns the same mac. They were having the same issue. I posted this on apple community and an another use owning the same device came up with this-

I believe it has something to do with the pressure sensitivity calibration in big sur. Most likely a bug that apple should be able to fix via software but from what I've read, people are experiencing the same on monterey also.

For now I set the click to light instead of medium and it work for me.

Data detection and quick look up is far more frequent than what I was getting when force click was set to medium. But the behaviour is still intermittent as you can see for the word configure it worked and for holiday it didn't. Moreover, I have upgraded to mac os Monterey. Force clicking a calendar event to get more details also worked on a few occasion which didn't work at all when the pressure sensitivity was set to medium for force clicking.
This issue has already been escalated to the engineering team. I will get to hear from them on Tuesday.

Tap-to-click is broken. Fails to register, and the mouse pointer often jumps around the scren.

4-finger swipe between screens/desktops (mainly when the menu bar is visible and apps are zoomed) is broken. 2-finger swipe to bring in the NC also fails in this instance.

The tap-to-click bug has been here for a while; it's quite shocking that such fundamental UI bugs happen in the first place, let alone them not being fixed. However, I'm sure they will be fixed at some point, and at least the system still works with ctrl-n to switch desktops, and ye olde push-to-click still works :)

Late 2018 MacBook Air. Same problems. Touches don't register and pointer sometimes jumps around.

Does force click for data detection and quick look-up work consistently? Make sure you have selected one finger force click. system preferences > track pad> quick lookup and data detectors > Force click with one finger.

Why are you in the habit of copy-pasting same content in reply to posts?

Sorry, I was trying to get an answer. I have replaced the product several times as apple support identified it as a faulty trackpad.

What? You got your computer replaced several times already because of this? Well, this is really no more than a software issue, this is not a hardware error. Please don't be worried over this and keep getting your computer replaced - this is no more than a software issue and will be resolved soon.

Thanks. For the third time, I was suggested to return it. I didn’t.

I'm coming to the end of the 2-year warranty on my MBA. I'm now tempted to get a new one blaming a trackpad issue :)

Yeah, the swipe to new desktop doesn't work for me either. Surprising they would release something that steps backward with their expensive accessory designed for their own brand of computer.

Just come on here to find this thread; and I have...

202 M1 MBA; on latest OS, both built in trackpad and Apple Magic TrackPad 2 both seem be not as sensitive as before the upgrade and also; when I press the 'fn' key for the emoji's, I have to press it twice, a lot, to bring them up if I wan t to use them etc...

Very annoying!

Hey, apple support team contacted me. I was instructed to shutdown the mac and continue pressing the powerbutton until the recovery window poped up. In the recovery options I opted for safari as I was told over the phone call. The issue was still there as I opened apple.com and the force click didn't work for website previews. Tap to click doesn't work in recovery mode. I recorded and sent it to the link I was provided. Thereafter, he concluded that they have able to isolate this issue related to hardware as he was informed by the engineering team. According the team, the next action to be followed is to take it to the service cetre to get it diagonsed. What's your take on that? Should I enroll for the beta program to test the beta releases? Or wait for next iteration for mac os Monterey before considering the option of servicing? I think this quite unlikely that I have replaced the mac twice and in total I received three new products within a month with the same hardware problem if at all this has anything to do with hardware.

Apple developers/testers don't even tie all the Feedbacks together relating to this issue, they definitely don't inform the support team what's going on.

Don't bother with the betas at the moment. The trackpad issues are even worse in the latest one. Do keep reading the beta threads though, as maybe the next one (due later today) will fix/improve the issue.

It's not a hardware issue, and booting into recovery mode or whatever is a total waste of your time. You have to just wait it out, unfortunately,.

With click pressure set to light, instead of medium data detection, quick lookup, force clicking on a date to add it to the calendar, event to get more details seems to work more frequently, but it is still inconsistent. Features listed under the section Other trackpad features over here are functioning consistently irrespective of the click pressure set to medium or light. Data detection and quick lookup work with a three-finger tap.

I would only ask you to please stop abusing the warranty, this is not going to help you since this is a software issue.

Came to this forum after updating to 12.1 beta (21C5039b) and freaked out because of this issue. Suddenly my tap to click sensitivity is totally borked and it doesn't register many of my inputs. It's driving me crazy. Glad to see it's not hardware related. I'm on an M1 Air that worked perfectly until now.

So what will it take to get rid of this garbage? I un-enrolled from the beta program, so would the next regular OS update potentially fix it? Is there anything I can do right now? My Air is about to be a year old but I'll take this thing to an Apple Store and have them install an actual functioning operating system that doesn't break the trackpad if I really have to.
