Anyone know if I can trade-in via the store rather than return through Fed-Ex? (For IUP) Last year both my husband and I had our phones “stolen” from the boxes and arrive empty to Apple. It was a headache to deal with and took awhile to get resolved via an investigation. It obviously happened at Fed Ex since I filmed myself handing it off to an employee. We also dropped them off on different days so there is definitely a scam happening. I would rather avoid that issue this year and just go to a store.

Not sure about IUP since I paid for my phone in full but I ordered online and traded in my iPhone and Apple Watch in store. Received my refund same day for the Watch and received the iPhone refund today.

I'd recommend stopping by your Apple Store and talking to them about it. The first person I spoke to said it wouldn't be possible but I was nice about it and they looked into it further which they said it was fine to trade in at the store. They applied it to the original form of payment and to the order.

If you do have to ship the phone in, make sure that you drop off your trade in device at a FedEx store and not a drop off / Walgreens. They'll give you a receipt of the trade in with the weight of the box, this will confirm that you indeed shipped your phone with it inside. Plus there's a red tampering tape included in the trade in box. If Apple's trade in partner sees that the tape has been tampered with upon arrival, they know that it was tampered in transit.

Yes we dropped them off at the Fed Ex store directly. (On different days). Filmed the whole thing, and got a receipt (with weight!). There was no tampering tape in our boxes last year. I know some received the red tape and others did not. For whatever reason, we didn’t have that tape. Nonetheless, they were both still stolen in transit somewhere (I’m guessing at that particular Fed Ex store however I can’t be sure). Even with all the securities, Apple still had to open investigations and it took quite awhile to resolve! Their excuse was that they are very busy this time of year with mail theft claims (of course lol).

No trade in box for me. Picked up the new phone at the Apple Store on Sat and today brought in my trade in device. Simple process with the specialist taking photos of the trade in device and serial number of the new phone. 5 min process and now don't have to worry about the horror stories of trade in devices via mailing in. Checked the status and already says nothing else I need to do.

If you are near a Apple Store this is the best solution
